re: Home Construction / Makeover / Maintenance Thread

Any ideas on how to get rid of tree branches in Bangalore? Recently cut a lot of branches from a tree growing in our compound. But the person we got to cut the branches wasn't able to haul them away. Now they are sitting in our backyard and terrace. Any ideas on a service I can contact to get them removed? BBMP is being non-cooperative as usual.

See if you can get some local hut dwellers who use wood for cooking and boiling water. Tell they can cut the branches and take them at no cost. They might oblige.

I am not aware of the layout of your house. If the water enters only thru the gate, is it possible to raise the level of the width of the gate opening sufficiently high, such that lesser water comes in ? Something like a tall, wide speed breaker ?

However, check with any Davangere Dosa outlets in the area (they use wood fire). Your maid / watchman of local apt blocks. (Many use such wood to heat water for bathing.

They appear to be an international company, based in UK, with branches in USA and India. No need to apologise: I was fascinated by the product(s). Their removable flood barrier was exactly what I wanted. The only problem is that the cost for a ten-foot gate is more than a VW Polo!

We're back to thinking about houselifting. And telling myself that I really should carry a sandbag or two around the garden every day, so it isn't so much of a potential heart attack when I have to!

Looks like a good idea, sir ! You can start with one bag with both arms, then move to one in each, and finally one on the head too !

Would you have any pics of the flooded state and dry state of the premise ?

If your house is within Madras Corporation City limits, you can raise a complaint with the Corporation site to construct a Rain water harvesting well at the periphery of your property. With the current government, you might solve this issue with little personal cost. You can quote the corporation complaint number to the CM cell (they have opened a citizen care department under an IAS officer who reports to the CM) for faster action.

We haven't actually been flooded since 2015, and when the risk occurs, I'm too busy taking to take photos!

As to 2015, I don't think there were any pics of during, but I know I have some of cleaning and drying out. It isn't a time I like to revisit, though.

re: Home Construction / Makeover / Maintenance Thread

Need some advice from experienced members here. We need to redo the flooring on our front porch (veranda) since the granite there has displaced due to direct sunlight and consequent heat.

Since the porch is open as of now I had planned to construct a front facade using terracotta brick (attached pic) and then close the whole thing off with a steel gate.

Our contractor is trying to push us towards the ubiquitous steel railing that most houses here have since that would last a lot longer and would require much less maintenance (it does cost about 2x though).

Wanted to check if there is anyway to reduce maintenance expense on these terrocota bricks (do they actually require early painting/polishing to maintain their look)?

re: Home Construction / Makeover / Maintenance Thread

Hi,

I recently extended the grill in our balcony by a feet to keep plants. But this resulted in rain water pouring in. I do not want to cover it with opaque sheet as the plants may not get enough sun light.

Today I saw this sheet at some apartment which seems to solve my problem.

Do any of you know what this sheet is called? It looks like sandwiched sheets with a square pattern.

Terracota bricks don't really need painting, but it depends on the look you are trying to get. Not painting it has its own finish where every tile has a distinct color to it. It also ages the same way. However, if you would rather have a uniform color then painting is the way out.

I guess you meant terracota jali-type bricks which have openings in them right? I have used the same in my house and can show you some examples if it helps.
