re: The Heavy Metal & Rock Thread

Usually Maiden has lots of repetition overall (especially chorus and some chord progressions) ..but PhX has got it right...most old school fans probably did not enjoy AMoLaD or Final Frontier as much as the 80s albums (me being one!)
BNW was the best of the new (Bruce's 2nd stint ) lot IMO. Heavier, yet melodic. That was also due to Adrian getting back in at the same time.

But the real Maiden, has to be either Powerslave, SSoSS, Somewhere in Time or Number of the Beast.

re: The Heavy Metal & Rock Thread

True Abhay. After scanning and digesting the full discography of Maiden,
I realized they can't get back to the 80's days in 2000. Bruce's vocal range itself has reduced. But even the reduced range is higher than many guys out there today.
In that way AMOLAD, DoD and BNW were very good if we analyze their merit individually and not compare them against the 80's albums.

I also felt they could have done much better job with production on Final Frontier. For BNW I mostly listen and see Rock in Rio.

And yes return of Adrian has added the punch. Many referred to Janick as dead weight.
But per me, he adds the other dimension for the progressive elements with more melody styled solos. Dave is as good as ever.

re: The Heavy Metal & Rock Thread

It was shocker to me to realize (so late?) that Portnoy has quit Dream Theater.
I had no idea about the replacement drummer. But the review of the new DT album said, he (Mike Mangini) is as good as Portnoy.

While looking at his credentials, seems like, he himself is an amazing guy.
Lecturing at Berklee College of Music, setting records for fast drumming and having played for Steve Vai. Wow!

Here is the review of the new DT album.

If you dig female fronted bands I'd recommend Otep, Blood Ceremony and Devil's Blood.

There are strong rumors of a Judas Priest performance in Bangalore this year.

on a side note, WH been listening to Septic Flesh's older non symphonic work recently...great stuff..thanks again for reccing that band to me.

Blood Ceremony and Devil's Blood play 70's & 80's style Psychedelic Metal. Check them out, they're pretty good.

Guys don't get your hopes too high. It's just a rumor at present. I'll definitely post here once the news is confirmed. There are also plans of a US Death Metal band playing in May. It's likely to be Nile or Suffocation.

@Abhay: Dude it's Priest! I won't settle for anything less than 6 cold ones

Will check out Holy Moses, thanks. I'm glad you're enjoying Septicflesh.

Ampere, there's a series of videos titled The Spirit Carries On on youtube of DT's drummer auditions. They auditioned 7 drummers, so 7 videos IIRC. Mangini's episode shows how easily they bonded with him over the music. And the man's got some pretty heavy credentials too! Still, Portnoy has no replacement. Unless they call in the Professor

Cheers,
Rahul

PS: The new album doesn't hold a candle to Images & Words, etc. Just my opinion.

No dude. The LOG gig is different (LOG is not Death Metal...in my opinion atleast).

Summerblaze festival promoters have announced that they're planing to get a US Death Metal band in May. Since Nile and Suffocation are headling a Metal fest in Jakarta (in May) it's quite likely that Summerblaze would feature one of them.

Yup LOG is not DM in my opinion as well but you probably are aware that people get mixed up and hence my question.

Thanks for the info, hope something gets fixed soon!
