Re: The Furniture Thread (Home/Office)

Guys,
We purchased a wooden easy chair about a year ago. Recently we have started hearing some kind of (very light) grinding sound emitting from the chair - like some insect is constantly chipping at the wood.

At the risk of worrying for a termite infection (no visible traces of wood-dust on floor or on the chair), is there any options for getting an expert's opinion on this? Or any self-treatment option that we can avail?

Risk for us is the other wooden furniture we have in the house.

No wood-dust does not eliminate wood-borers, given that You hear grinding sound. And wood-borers, though cause significantly less damage than Termites, can spread equally fast.

Its always better to get a professional help, be it Termite or wood-borers - any trusted carpenter will know what to do.

Wood under stress can be noisy. Do you hear them while you are sitting, rocking, or while its not in use? I have had fence posts with termites in them, never hear a thing, even with ears stuck to the wood. You could try to using a stethoscope to amplify the sounds and make sure it is from the chair. Use a magnifying lens to look for holes in the wood. If you have a maid, she may be sweeping away the wood particles in the morning before you get a chance to be suspicious.

Re: The Furniture Thread (Home/Office)

My kitchen cabinets were made out of rubwood panels and now in the cabinets adjoining the walls/under the sink, i see black fungus/mold on the panels.

Quick googling asks me to clean with bleach sprays.

Would spraying this help?
https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B099WB2W7K/

And wipe it with this
https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B08QTSTD6M/

I did place silica gel packets but they don't seem to have fully controlled the growth.

Vinegar solution should kill mould.

Re: The Furniture Thread (Home/Office)

Had made a dressing table and a 3-door almirah at a furniture shop at Trivandrum. Mahagony wood. 41k for the almirah and 20k for the dressing table. I sent them a picture from the internet and they made it. The almirah is 7ft tall, 5 feet long. Deep enough. Very spacious. They offer 15 years warranty. Being wood, I trust it.

Re: The Furniture Thread (Home/Office)

We have few outdoor moulded chairs which have faded over the years. Is there a way to restore them? Did a google search and found two options
1) fire torch (ruled out)
2) painting

Bit confused which paint type is suitable on plastic. Can anyone guide?
Thanks in advance!

What "fire torch?" High heat and plastic don't mix well --- and one of the by-products is very poisonous fumes.

However, this is the easiest and quickest option, provided you wear a face mask, do it in the open, etc. etc.
I fixed up a couple of garden Nilkamals ages ago using a butane torch from amazon. It did the task brilliantly. and was about a 10 minute job on one chair.

Re: The Furniture Thread (Home/Office)

Goodness! What do you do, melt the surface so it flows smooth?

I've seen videos on plastic welding. I've even tried to do small pieces. I did under the kitchen chimney and didn't use a mask. Very unwise! Needs a proper respirator.

Re: The Furniture Thread (Home/Office)

We are planning a king size cot and dining chairs for our house. While there are plenty options online, we are confused whether to look for Engineered wood or Seesham wood. Please guide.

Simple:
Engineered wood: Cheap but short life (LDF ~2-3 years; MDF ~4-5 years; HDF ~6-7 years). Easy to move around the house.

Sheesham: Expensive. Loooooong life. Heavy.

Re: The Furniture Thread (Home/Office)

Does anyone have experience with Desket furniture? Visited their factory yesterday and liked a sofa. Prices were reasonable as well. It has too many 5 star reviews on Google which seems to be a red flag.

I bought a Desket Sofa - https://desket.in/collections/custom...t-dolce-desket

We paid 20k for the 3 seater while the listed price was 15K. The extra was for the fabric upgrade we chose - http://sarom.co.in/catalogpdf/CAROLINA.pdf

The sofa was well made and I liked it a lot. However the legs are metal made to look like wood. Try going to their factory - it will help you understand their work better.

As for the sofa - since we moved into a new place which already was fully furnished, we gave it away (1.5 years old) to a relative.

The astonish spray is amazing. It helps in cupboards and also tiles. What i thought was the color of the tile grouting was actually mold pigment which this spray removed - without even a wipe. Just spray, leave and rinse. Don't expect apple fragrance though - it smells like plain old bleach.
