The L-1011 was, as you know, the most technologically advanced airliner of its day and remained so till mid-1980s. A committee headed by JRD had evaluated which aircraft should be added to the Air India/ Indian Airlines fleet to address the thinner regional routes of Air India and the medium to thicker rotes of Indian Airlines. Their recommendation, made in 1983, was the Boeing 757 - lower weight for IA and higher AUW for AI. As a part of this evaluation Boeing sent a 757 for tests. The ones in Mumbai were conducted in 1982 in the latter part of the year*. When Rajiv Gandhi came as PM the French went all out and we placed a large order for the A320. Both turned out to be great aircraft.

*PS: I took half day off from work and went to watch the multiple landing, taxiing, take off runs by the B757. In those days the visitors gallery, at Santacruz, was an open balcony and I went with a pair of binoculars. It was a simpler and more trusting time which was to be shattered forever with the events of 1984 and 1985.

re: Scale Models - Aircraft, Battle Tanks & Ships

General Dynamics introduced Convair 880 in 1959. Less than 100 models were produced. 990 was stretched version introduced in mid 60s but poor demand led to closure of 880 programme.
The period between 1960 to 1975 saw introduction of many different types of aircrafts.

India Today in 1980s published article about Government contemplating to buy soviet Yak 40 Tu 204 and IL 86 instead of Boeung and Airbus. The plan was to have Yak 40 run by Vaydoot and tupolev 204 by Indian Airlines. iL 86 would serve Air India. But the plan didnt materialize for good. Soviets/Russian lag behind West in in Engine technology. Even newer generation of Sukhoi 100 superjet and T 50 suffers from it.

That is a rare aircraft. They pursued speed instead of economics not realizing that Mach 0.8 to 0.88 was the economical limit to air speed for an airliner and has remained so to this day.

The Yak-40 discussion was very real. The attraction being payment in rupees and not in scarce foreign exchange and the very low initial capital outlay the Soviets were offering.

Love this plane. I am not quite sure what it is, but it does look “faster” than a DC8 or B707 for some reason.

Although it became part of GE in the early 1950s I have always thought of Convair as a standalone company. They have produced some very interesting planes, if not fast looking, actually very very fast.

I think the 880 was more or less designed and produced in-house by Convair with no interference from GE.

Some other very fast looking planes were the F102 Delta Dagger and the F106 Delta Dart. An actual very very fast plane was one of my personal favourites, The B58 Hustler.

If you ever find yourself in the USA, there are still a number of these planes around in various museums.

re: Scale Models - Aircraft, Battle Tanks & Ships

Saw these at San Francisco Airport. All in 1/72 Scale, part of the Jim Lund collection. He has a collection of 1, 600 aircraft! He started assembling models as a child and later returned to the hobby ( same as me ) Hope some day to have a collection like this!

The 757 and 767 were on Wet Lease. So the aircraft were operated and maintained by the respective airline for Air India. Airlines generally Wet Lease aircraft when it is not feasible to train staff for operation of 1-2 aircraft of a new type for a short duration.

Some new arrivals in 1:200 and 1:400 Scale Aircraft and 1:64 Scale Cars. Showcase picture uploaded. Incase individual pictures are required, kindly let me know.

The Airbus A300 operation for Indian Airlines probably was working more in its favour. A300 was really a workhorse for IC and made huge profits just with Cargo. A320 was more suited i believe also from capacity and efficiency point of view. It was a right upgrade for a 737-200 size aircraft already in IC fleet. 757 was slightly bigger and the aircraft was never as efficient as a A320. Although it had some pretty good high altitude performance and it could carry more payload with less restriction on some routes. That initial IC order probably is the reason why we see soo many A320 in the Indian skies today.

Can you please post close up shots of your Tomcat fleet and the Mirage 2000? I assume they are 1/200 Hogan, correct?

Please post some pics of the 747s in 1:200 Scale. I'm not able to tell the 1:200 models from the 1:400 models in the showcase due to different plane models.
