Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

OMG 2

Its fine if say 10-15 minutes of a masala entertainer is used for an actual social message, but the madness to keep virtue signalling throughout the whole movie is unfortunate.

Ridiculing natives & calling them "backward" has always been the forte of MSM, celebs & influencers. I'm never going for movies that promote this preachy social self-flagellation, moreso when it's at my cost (money as well as precious time).

I gave ample chance to the movie but couldn't tolerate it beyond 10 mins.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Watched “OMG 2” with the family yesterday at a PVR nearby; just because tickets for “Ghoomer” were simply not available since the movie has barely got any shows in theatres.

Coming on the heels of the stupendous success of “OMG 1”, I guess we were expecting “OMG 2” to follow suit. Unfortunately, the movie just doesn’t manage to enthrall this time around. It feels like a forceful attempt to hold the audience’s attention. Pankaj Tripathi is no doubt one of the finest actors in the industry today, but the overall theme of the movie has been loosely handled.

While “OMG 1” resonated with the audience because of it’s substance, “OMG 2” lacks any.

2/5.

All that breathes (hindi)
rating : 4/5
Streaming on prime

The story of the tireless efforts of a family(brothers) that runs a bird hospital focusing on raptors.
Set during the tumultuous time period of the Pandemic & the anti-CAA prtests, raising the question - if all the we breathe is the same air, why cannot we treat others (winged or otherwise) with more empathy?
Beautifully shot, reflecting the stark reality of the cites we live in. Not preachy, the narration from the protagonists drives home the point that we are heading to an ecological disaster and that there is hope, if we choose to have more empathy.
The ending was a bit abrupt, I suppose that was intentional.

Satyaprem in Katha

Streaming: Amazon

What a royal waste of talent of the likes of Kartik Aryan, Supriya Pathak, Gajraj Rao etc. Mindless plot, no gripping story cannot relate to any genres. I guess this movie was made just for making one. The only saving grace was the colourful Gujrati costumes, the Kashmir locales (for a brief moment). I was amused to see Kartik Aryan pouting more than Kiara Advani. The social message in the movie got lost in the dances, songs and the unnecessary bantering. Didnt understand the controversy in the Pasuri song which is nowhere close to the original classic one. May be one time watch if nothing else.

The Hindi Movies Thread-mta3mdk2ndg2._v1_.jpg

A pretty straight forward whodunnit movie inspired from "Knives Out" and Agatha Christie. The really quick conversations/statements from Vidya Balan makes you feel the movie had too many characters and you tend to miss out on some clues or revelations. A bit of overacting by everyone? I felt that.

Location was really good.

Rating - 2/5. Available on Amazon Prime)

What a bad cut paste and copy film, such films makes me feel that Bollywood is useless. Straight adaption of the Knives out movie with no twists or turns, the plot was so so ordinary, no attempts to make it interesting. What was Vidya Balan thinking when she took the role and what a poor acting. The other characters are loud and boring esp Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor and rest. All in all totally avoidable. It is better to see the original again.

I just can’t stand the guy. For him, Overacting would be an understatement. He was so loud & over the top that we had a headache by the time it was over.

Movie was typical Karan Johar affair. Used a lot of old songs, truck loads of emotional scenes.

Reminded me why we stopped watching these kinda movies 3.5 years ago. Lesson learnt

Watched the movie RARKPK - despite past resolutions of not watching KJO movies (from prior experiences with Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (KANK) and K3G)

Few positives : Some funny dialogues and the liberal use of old hindi songs (nice to get the newer gen to hear the magic of old songs). Some positive social messages (Now, if only they were limited to 'some'. KJO has thrown in nearly every conceivable social message). Visually everything is mostly pleasing on screen - the sets, the colors etc

Lots of negatives :

The family drama and endless sermonizing in the second half of the movie is like watching some saas-bahu serial - over the top, melodramatic and totally predictable.

The idea of a weeklong extra marital affair - that too from 45 years ago - that makes the hearts of 70 year olds go dhak-dhak is incredulous. The romancing like college kids of these characters over old songs & poetry takes some serious believing.

Alia's character as a firebrand TV journalist seemed like KJO's poor attempt at intellectualizing Poo (Kareena Kapoor from K3G !) She even has her own background song with cheesy lyrics that describe how badass she is.

Jaya Bachchan's character as someone who sees no good in anything around her is totally unidimensional.

The music is perhaps Pritam's most ordinary score in quite a while.

The acting for the most part is decent - Alia is good and so is the supporting cast. Jayaji as the forever grumpy lady and Ranveer as the over the top, unclassy, romantic hero - were completely in their acting comfort zones. Dharam paaji and Shabanaji in their respective roles were competent for what their characters allowed.

All in all, an avoid - unless you are diehard fan of KJO movies, saas-bahu type family drama
Score : 2/ 5

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Watched Satyaprem Ki Katha on Prime Video yesterday.

Nothing great to write home about. Decent performances by Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani.

The theme is revealed in a very lacklustre fashion; could have been handled better for sure.

Overall, 3/5

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Jawan: 2.5/5

This basically seems like a Bollywood version of a Tamil movie starring Vijay. The pacing is just horrible, it kept jumping around which made it really hard to watch, you really wanted the movie to end by the last 30 mins while Pathaan was a genuine entertainer!

However, it was worth watching due to its social messaging especially since in the current dispensation, this is the only way to get certain messaging across without getting into trouble. The hospital scenes - a thinly veiled reference to the 2017 Gorakhpur tragedy is just heartbreaking (even more heartbreaking how the innocent - those who tried to help was prosecuted). Also addresses the government underwriting billions of US$ in corporate loans while farmers face harassment for tiny loans. There is also a sense of diversity that Bollywood shies away from recently. Such overt social messaging is common in South Indian cinema but not in Bollywood which has become much more sensitive.

I’d say watch the movie, it’s rare to see such an anti-establishment movie in Bollywood (unlike in the South).
