Re: The Regional movies thread!

Movie Name : Abraham Osler
Language : Malayalam
Genre : Thriller
OTT : Hotstar

My Rating : 3.5 / 5

I always like a good thriller and this was quite a decent thriller. For a change it was good to see Jayaram playing a serious role. Audience have always associated Jayaram with fun/comedy roles. I would definitely suggest this as a "One time" time pass movie for fans of thriller genre.

Seems to be a problem of mixing up vowels. I stand corrected, thank you.

Rekhachitram

Rekhachitram is a smartly made movie. While the core premise is a common one seen in a lot of movies, the way the makers have weaved in a key Mammootty movie from the 80's along with few other movies, actors, incidents of those times is really fantastic. It is all very intricately done and for people familiar with the movies and people of the 80's it is an added pleasure. All the actors do very well and the recreation of the 80's is also done well. The choice of cast is brilliant.

Kudos to the makers for putting all of this together. Really required some great imagination. I think special thanks is in order for Mammukka also as this film needed his permission(as well as several others) to be made.

Movie Name : Miss You
Language : Tamil
Genre : Romantic Drama
OTT : Amazon Prime Video

My Rating : 1.5 / 5

I wish the director had just stuck to the core concept of the movie and should have built a screenplay around it. Instead we get all kind of fights, villains and songs which just completely spoiled the movie IMHO. The first half of the movie is completely intolerable and the 2nd half is much better. My suspicion is people will not be able to watch the first 30-45 minutes and will leave the movie mid-way!

Aha. Hopefully this is as good as the first one.

P.s something tells me it isn’t far before Aniruddh moves into acting too.

Pani (Malayam)

Streaming: Sony liv

Malayam cinema seems to be churning good movies at regular intervals, be it action or thriller. Joju George directs and acts in this movie where the plot isnt anything new but the pace buildup and some super acting by the 2 new actors makes the film watchable. The plot could have been made more exciting with some innovative screenplay. The climax is gory but was the cherry on the cake kind of scene. Joju George could bring some expression to his acting as its the same in all his movies.

Both the guys stole the show! After Ramsay Bolton from GoT, these 2 really made me hate the characters - played their part really well!

Just learned that Abhinaya, who played the character of Joju’s wife is hearing and speech impaired in real life.

I see plenty of gore and violence being portrayed in Malayalam movies off lately - Bougainvillea, Marco, Mura, Pani.

Joju is on the way to become 'the depression star' of Malayalam cinema.

He got good screen presence, great voice and good acting skills to fill the gap of middle aged action heroes, which Mammooty, Mohanlal & Suresh Gopi used to do in 2000's. But for that he needs to put effort in his physique and selection of roles.

True, Both those guys did exceptionally well. Especially Sagar Surya.

She has done many notable roles in south Indian movies, I heard her name first time when Nadodigal got released. It's fascinating to see she performing so well with all the limitations she have

I think from the Covid era, Malayalam audience has grown more tolerance to violence in movies. Mostly due to the exposure to world cinema (especially Korean, French, Thai etc)

"Rifle Club" is out on Netflix. I watched it in theater and really loved it. Some friends absolutely hated it. I think it is definitely a must watch.

Joju George will always be the infamous Thankan Chettan on and off the screen. The way he stalked Adarsh H S for posting Pani review in FB

The movie is really different and if we can withstand first 45 mins, it is super masala movie to watch.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Pani (Malayalam):

Imagine your friend and you start off in your cars for a morning drive after agreeing to meet for breakfast at a cafe somewhere. And imagine you reach the cafe and have to wait a couple of hours for your friend to get there. You know which route he is going to take, and wonder what's taking him so long? That's the feeling I got watching Pani.

A predictable age old story, and as soon as the main characters are introduced, you know what's going to happen. Then it's just a case of waiting for them to happen on screen. The movie could have easily been 20 minutes shorter without compromising on the story.

The technical aspects of the movie are good, as is the acting, especially the two villains. A bonus was watching a movie filmed in Thrissur, as I have spend a big part of my life in the city and still do whenever possible.

All We Imagine As Light (Malayalam):

I was debating with myself if I should watch this one, as I am not a fan of art movies - or "award padam" as Malayalis call them. The movie did not fail to meet my expectations, and thoroughly bored me to death.

I read some explanations about the brilliance of the movie where the light and shadow in a scene is supposed to depict what the characters are feeling and how flickering lights represent the hope of the character in a scene and so on. I guess if you are the type of viewer searching for meanings in lights and shadows you may enjoy the movie.

It's fair to ask why did I watch the movie, if I am not a fan of such movies? I thought maybe I will find something interesting, maybe it will work for me. But it didn't.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Pani movie looked to me like ‘Naan Mahan Alla’ and ‘Ventayadhu vilayadu’. I wouldn’t recommend watching with kids.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched Sookshmadarshini and Rifle club. I enjoyed Sookshmadarshini more. Nice pace, although you could kind of guess the plot, I felt it was quiet well made.

I did not enjoy Rifle club so much. Lot of blood and shooting and after a point, well basically pointless.

Watched Sookshmadarshini - Malayalam (Hotstar)
Characters lack depth and forced at few times, other than that it is a nice one time watch. Good performance by Nazriya and Basil. Better not to read any detailed reviews or watch related videos before watching this movie.
