1- Please no. Too many smilies make the post (and the forum) look like twenty thousand other non-serious forums on the net. Basically, you see more cartoons than content. In fact, I am even against the "bigger" smilies like etc. They draw too much attention.

2- Can be done but the threads generally get personal or conflicting and that would be a challenge for the mod team. We have enough Safari vs Scorpio, Linea vs ANHC anyways

Is a "biodata" of those cars on the mast head posted somewhere?

Not just the pic, I guess we would like to know names of the owner, photographers, kind of post processing done, etc.

Hi Mods,

In the "Classifieds" section, would it be possible to remove (by default) an object (car/stereo/accessory etc.) once it has been sold? It is a lot of wasted time to look at ads more than a year old which have already been sold. Also in the same section, would it be possible to include the name of the city that the ad refers to. Would save loads of time if one is not interested in purchasing anything from any other city apart from the one we live in.

Best Regards,
Suzuki San

once an item is marked as sold, it is deleted soon after automatically. I believe this removal is done automatically every now and then

CaliAtenza,

1. The 2-smiley rule has existed almost since the birth of the forum. As mentioned by Eddy above (and other members much earlier in this thread and in others) - it helps maintain an uncluttered and crisp look on the forum.

2. Well, as you know we have shifting-gears, and our rules state that no political or religious discussions should take place. These can be very volatile and controversial topics and our core focus is automobiles - so best to stay away from never-ending discussions on politics & religion and concentrate on what we are all here for with short walks in the shifting-gears section.

BSD,

As mentioned elsewhere, its just a random sampling of cars, we would have liked to have more but we had to limit it - reason mentioned here

The Jeep and Amby belong to GTO and Rudra respectively. You can search for their threads/posts on the forum and find the original pics.

The other cars belong to members.

By far the most interesting in terms of image processing is the Red vRS. The original picture was actually of a BLACK vRS (belonging to member mad_monkey) - but Rudra worked his magic to convert it to an almost vector-like image of a RED vRS!

Suzuki_san,

As mentioned earlier in this thread - we are currently working on a new classifieds software.

I can confirm that the new software has a lot more features, and one of them is location-specific searches.

Image quality with t-bhp watermarking

Dear Mods,

Regarding:
The images uploaded to team-bhp gets re-compressed with the t-bhp watermark.

Fact:
When the images gets re-compressed, the original image quality is not preserved. You can see jpeg artifacts around sharp edges of the subject in the image. This is okay for most of the images uploaded in various threads.

Problem:
We have some threads dedicated for photos, like the official non-auto image thread. Many photography enthusiasts visit and upload their images in those threads. Can we increase the jpeg image quality in those threads when the images gets re-generated at the server with the t-bhp watermark? As of now, if I save an image in Photoshop with top quality (12) and upload it into one of these threads, the image which finally appears in the thread will have jpeg artifacts since the re-compressed or re-generated image at the server is not a high quality image due to an aggressive jpeg compression.

Thanks!
Sunil

clevermax, that doesnt sound very feasible. I think an easier workarould would be to
1.link to the high res pics hosted elsewhere
2. mods grant an exception to allow images hosted elswhere to be posted on these specific threads

Chetta..

Years back t-bhp allowed embedding images hosted in other domains. But as we know, this is against the rules now.. That's the reason I posted such a suggestion.

Please include Volvo in the car advice section. Even if there are no Volvo owners, a basic review can be included till someone buys a Volvo. Its a shame that we see San and Chinkara there but no Volvo!

I knew that it was Rudra's handiwork, (from posts in harishv's skoda thread) but was thinking that the VRs is the one referred to as "carrier" or something like that in the thread about the JBL "twin cars" journey from Mumbai to B'lore. (where is that thread now? It was in the travelouges section.) The reason for suspicion was description about extensive photography in that trip. I think such kind of post processing may be involved (at least to a lesser extent) in the other photos?

While the info you posted is certainly appreciated, I believe that the policy / intention is to rotate and /or change the images as as when need arises.

We have some pages about the Mods, and some pages about "conflict of interests" for members in the ICE section, no? My request is about creating a similar single page, which would edited as and when images are changed. My concept is to have a sort of table type lay out, with the image appearing in one row, with the next cell containing details like owner (if he consents), and some details about the photo(grapher).

Yes two simileys are more than enough.
I had been through many posts but still if this was disscussed i am very sorry to disturb.
Mods why don't you delete very old threads as in 3-4 year olds, which don't have any importance and are just eating your band width. Just keep this site healthy.
(Just a suggestion)

The image is stored in original form (no compression) on the server. You are probably talking about the thumbnail that gets created in 800x size. Clicking on the thumbnail will open the original picture (in a separate window). We do not have any resizing / compression enabled on the server (AFAIK).

The reasons we don't allow external hosting are:

Quote:
- Bandwidth Theft : Hotlinking to photographs from other websites results in us using their server resources. This is popularly termed as Bandwidth Theft and is frowned upon by Website Administrators.

- Expiration of photographs : Most free photo-hosting websites delete photographs after a year of use. This will render most travelogues, supercar reports, long-term reviews etc. useless.

- Inappropriate content : Recently, some photo-hosting sites were bought over by unscrupulous organisations, who replaced all existing photographs on their servers with inappropriate / adult content. This is certainly not ideal for a child-safe community like Team-BHP, which enjoys a varied audience from all backgrounds.

- Convenience : It is far more convenient to use a single interface / website for including pictures within your posts.
There are some older threads which had pictures hosting on a free image server, that eventually got bought out by a porn company. You can imagine the embarassment! And then, there are plenty whose images have expired.

Unfortunately, we just don't have any data on Volvos. Here is what we will do : A mass PM will be sent out to all members who have listed "volvo" in their user profile page. In addition, we'll make a request to Volvo to lend us cars for a comprehensive test.

Server bandwidth & storage are the least of our worries . We aren't using anymore than 40% of the bandwidth allocated to our account, and about 20% of the storage. It's the processing power + speed (chip, RAM, high rpm hard-disks) that need frequent upgrades.

Older threads may still be relevant. For instance, a member may have asked of the advantages of tubeless over tube-type tyres in 2004. That is still relevant today.

Woahh.. that's huge space. So no prob.
Yes many old threads surely help. Take car man.

Could we have some kind of time limit for sensational matters like the "Shiney Ahuja" case. Say 10 days or something. Keeping in mind the basic intent of T-BHP forum.
There are a lot of people on that thread, who have suggested that these topics defeat the purpose of this forum.
Personally I do not mind such content being here, butt, just a suggestion, to keep it purely car related.

Dunno if this was asked earlier.

How about having names of persons browsing a thread at the bottom of teh thread? Some forum software has this feature.
