All forms of National ID Cards must be avoided.

There seems to be a wave (although a very very tiny one) building up against Aadhar. Hopefuly it will build up even more. Good on ESG for organising this.

The passport is also a National ID as is PAN. You are trying to promote anarchy in an attempt to infuse some order. I personally feel (limited agreement with Samurai) it is high time Aadhar and NPR are merged. Since the data base of Aadhar is about 100x that of NPR who goes should be quite obvious.

It's a travel document. Nobody insists on a passport for anything other than travel purpose. And that too only for international travel. It's not compulsory for anything else.

A PAN is for financial transactions. When I travel, nobody insists on seeing my PAN card. When I go to vote, no one insists on seeing my PAN card.

A National ID is something which is compulsory for different unrelated purposes.

"Papers please"

@carboy; I am afraid PAN is used for many other purposes as well, and I am not happy with the way it is bandied around.

Like what? I have seen it asked for phone connections but they don't insist on it - there used to be an alternate section if you didn't have a PAN. If they have made it compulsory now, then that's bad.

Here it's asked only for cash transactions. You have the option of paying of not paying by cash.

> Rental Agreements

I have rented my flat out & I didn't ask for a PAN number from my tenant.
My cobbler may insist on seeing my PAN number before he repairs my shoes but I cannot blame the Govt for that. What I said was "PAN is compulsory only financial transactions". The compulsion I was talking about was ones imposed by the Govt. People other than the Govt can insist on arbitrary stuff - I am not bothered by that.

So you pay by using your bank's debit or credit card which would get tied in with your Pan Card.

Ok. What's your point - does that make PAN a national ID card?

While it is linked, you don't have to carry it and show it everyplace. That is the point.

My point is that your argument that NO ONE asks for your Pan Card while travelling is flawed.

Yes. Its one of those transparent (invisible) ways in which we are tracked and monitored.
