Re: What's that sound?

Greetings,
I have a Polo 2014 Comfort Line.
A pre drive check up of my car made me realise that there's a Hissing sound upon depressing the brake pedal and it fades upon releasing it.
A little bit of googling pointed that it may be from the Brake Booster/Slave.
But the brakes work fine.
Nevertheless didn't want to risk on highway.
Experts can please help and tell what the sound might be.
Also if its the Brake Booster, where can I source it from in Hyderabad.
Thank you.

Re: What's that sound?

Heard a hiss sound from the engine bay a couple of times while driving. Each time it lasted for about one second. Drove further for about 5 km but did not hear the sound again. Was reminded of the sound when a bike engine misfires. The car is a Chevy Beat petrol, just over 7 years old.

Any pointers? Thanks in advance.

Re: What's that sound?

Cross-posting from the Storme thread:

My Storme has a loud, low-frequency sound between 1300-1500 rpm, seen more in 2nd & 3rd gear.

No vibrations at any time during running or start/stop.

Clutch is old, but no slipping noticed.

What could it be ?

Re: What's that sound?

Innova Crysta - a rattling sound from inside the gear lever area when driving in constant rpm around 1600-1800 in any of the higher gears. Sounds like a small plastic bit broken loose under the gear lever leather covering.

Resolution - replacement of gear lever assembly. Crysta has a 3 piece assembly unlike a single rod in they older generation. The joints are vulnerable to slight displacement causing the vibration. Cost 10,500/

Re: What's that sound?

I have a 2015 Alto K10 that I bought from Maruti True Value in December 2019. It has been driven a total of close to 70,000 km now. This is my first car and I'm a rather new driver, but I've been loving every moment of it from the day I bought the car. Since the last two months I've been hearing a "sshhhk sshhhk" sound that appears to be coming from the front-right area of the car. The internal between the sound decreases with increasing speed. That is, in slow speed the gap between each sound with be more, and at higher speeds the gap decreases. I have been thinking it's because of the loose wheel cover of the front-right tyre. Any idea what the sound exactly is, and is it something that needs immediate repairs?

Thanks in advance!

Re: What's that sound?

I have a 2016 model Ford Aspire TDCi driven 63K km. Recently, I am noticing some sound (somewhere behind the gearbox/engine bay) while accelerating from standstill (1st & 2nd gears). Feels like there is some kind of weird mechanical movements which is momentary and will go off once the speed is steady. What could be the cause?
I am planning to get the car to the service center since its still under warranty.

Thanks in advance.

First-time Car Owner Seeking Advice: Unusual Car Sounds & What to Look Out For

Hey fellow TeamBHP members!

As a first-time car owner, I recently encountered a situation that highlighted my limited knowledge about the various sounds a car can make . I think it would be incredibly helpful for us new car owners to discuss and learn about car sounds that we should be aware of.

My own experience involved a constant flapping sound coming from my car that increased with speed, which initially caused me concern as I thought there was an issue with the engine. After pulling over and inspecting the vehicle, I discovered it was a metallic nut stuck in the tire!

I'd appreciate any advice or information you all could provide on this topic, especially for those of us just starting our car ownership journey. Some questions to consider:
  1. What are some common car sounds one should be aware of?
  2. How can we differentiate between normal sounds and potential issues?
  3. Are there any sounds that are commonly mistaken for something else
I look forward to expanding my knowledge on this subject and becoming a more informed on this topic !

Re: What's that sound?

Hi everyone,

I have a 2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited edition, which is not AWD. Recently it has developed a strange humming noise which only comes up between the speed of 55 mph and 65 mph. The approximate RPM’s at this speed are between 1800 to 2000. The noise reduces and completely goes away when I am driving at lower or higher speeds.
This is a recent development.

Since this problem started, I have got new tires and got them aligned(two tires were due, I got all 4 new now). My previous tires were Michelin. I got Bridgestone this time. Size is as per manufacturer recommendation: 245/45R19

Other people have also faced similar problems but no one has provided a specific solution. More such cases in Hyundai forum: Link

The noise:
It's not constant but a rhythmic humming and vibration in the accelerator pedal.
Hmmmmmm…. Silent… hmmmmm…. Silent….
The humming sound is for almost 1 or 1.5 seconds and then half a second pause, and repeats. This is at the peak when I’m driving around 60mph.
I’m sorry for not being very articulate with my description of the noise. I tried capturing it in a video but failed to do so.

Let me know if I can share more information. Thanks.

Re: What's that sound?

An update from my post just above this one:

I took my car for a test drive with my mechanic this weekend, and we ruled out any major problems. However, a possible cause of the noise could be wheel bearings, since we had new tires and alignment done after the sound started.

The noise is currently very faint and only noticeable between 55 and 65 mph if you pay close attention. Because of this, the mechanic refused to make any repairs at this time and suggested that we wait until the noise becomes more obvious.

I'm torn on this decision. On the one hand, I think my mechanic is being honest and has my best interests at heart. He doesn't want to overcharge me for unnecessary repairs. On the other hand, I'm wondering if he was just trying to avoid working on my car so he could go to his soccer match on Saturday.

It appears to be from wheel bearings indeed. However, the noise will start increasing quite quickly now.
Changing wheel bearing is a long process and needs Lathe work. As it not troubling you much, your mechanic asked you to wait.

If it is one of the driven tyres, it can be easily replicated in a garage by lifting the car.

Re: What's that sound?

Hello everyone,

I have a quick question regarding Datsun redi-GO AMT. When I start the engine, it turns on, but there's a noticeable impact sound, as if the car is experiencing a sudden jolt or impact. However, once it starts, everything seems fine, and I can drive it on the highway at speeds up to 100 km/h without any issues. The noise only occurs when I initially start the car, and it feels like a "Dum" effect, as if something is hitting the engine. What could be the issue?

I then turned off the car and started it three times. I could feel that sound. On the fourth attempt, there was no such effect, but on the following try, the "thud" sound was present. Once the engine is on, it emits this "thud" sound before starting.

Could be one of the following:

1. Worn engine mounts
2. Worn transmission mounts
3. Mis aligned bonnet - check bonnet rubber stopper thingy.
4. Unlikely but broken or cracked exhaust pipe to chassis welds

Re: What's that sound?

I have a strange whining sound in my Fabia 1.2TDI (2012) when I accelerate. I reported this to Tafe service and they said the Solenoid malfunctioned and I got it replaced by them.

But I notice that the sound is creeping again over a period of time. Previously the noise was very high, but now its at say 50%. The whining sound is as though I'm accelerating the car too fast. Don't hear these in higher speeds. I have uplaoded the video to YouTube:

Any ideas? How can this be fixed?
