WHEN: When you go over rough patches/small potholes without breaking. Some pat-pat noise from front left suspension. No noise when going over spead breaker (after slowing down).

POSSIBLE CAUSE: Checked lower arm with local mechanic friend, he said it looks fine. He said it may be from steering ball joints.

Any clues?
Latheesh,
Its possibly the caliper pins.

Did you mean change it or get it checked?
As it just the brake pads or everything?

Not sure. Let me check tomorrow if it happens if I just go straight or reverse & not turn the steering wheel.

What does it mean if it comes with the steering wheel turned(fully or partly)?

Power steering's usually give out a whining noise at full turns and loads. Park the car somewhere silent, slowly turn the steering towards full lock, and listen closely to the sound. On approaching full lock, you will hear a whining sound.

Sometimes, the sound will be magnified. Is this the sound you are describing?. Please check and let me know.

Re: What's that sound ??

I get a whistling noise ONLY in fifth gear in my Swift. It doesn't happen in any other gear, and seems more prominent when I upshift to 5th at lower speeds (maybe because of less engine noise, though). Brought it up with MASS a couple of times but they couldn't figure it out so let it be since it isn't too loud or annoying. Any ideas?

Re: What's that sound ??

My apologies if this has been covered earlier, but off-late I have started hearing some sound when I press the brake pedal on my 1996 Zen.
When I press the brake pedal (which have become very hard and does not get depressed much (the play has reduced drastically), I hear a sound similar to rats getting hurt and screaming - squeek squeek.

This sound does not come regularly, but comes more frequently if I just pump the pedal three-four times when the car is off.
I also get the feeling that as if I am blowing in some baloon using a pump and some air is escaping while making this sound. Well, that is just my feeling about this whole experience.

Brake pads were replaced in August. Brake liners are in bad shape and I know that.

S U N, is the sound coming from around the pedal area? If so, use WD-40 generously

Thanks GTO. That helped.
I no longer hear the noise; however my brakes are still very 'hard'. The pedal's play is very less.

Nope - there is no sound when I turn the steering wheel fully.

Re: What's that sound ??

Palio 1.6 GTX

i hear a kharkhar (drum beat) sound whenever the car idles - but, if i press the clutch - the sound goes off / or if i rev a bit the sound goes off and comes back again. the sound intensity (hope i am using the right word) increases with the headlights / high beam.

The sound comes at times and not always - but it is very irritating. i tried looking in the engine ba - but it is difficult to point the source with the engine running.

i got the timing belt, alternator belt, ac belt & clutch bearing changed but still the sound persists.

any pointers? thanks in advance.

Obviously the sound is associated with the engine vibrating than usual. When the headlights are on, more load on the engine - lesser idle speed - more vibration - more sound. When revved, engine is more balanced - less vibration - less sound.
When the clutch is engaged, I guess the vibrations are transmitted and hence less sound.

I suspect engine mountings and related parts. How old is the car?.

Re: What's that sound ??

Engine mounts are fine - got that checked when the clutch release bearing was changed - 56K kms - 8years old.

Engine vibration - not that i have noticed. what can be the cause for this?

Further update: The Booster (with TMC) had gone bad.
Symptom: The pedal remained hard even when the car was turned on. This was a sign of booster (+TMC) issue.
One could hear air being pumped while pressing the brake pedal even from inside the car.

After getting the new one, braking is a lot more predictable, plus the pedal is depressible once you switch on the engine.
Posting this for the benefit of others.
