Excessive external noise on highway at high speeds

Hi Guys ,

I own a 2004 Accent Petrol. Done 51K on it. Tyres just about ok id say. I have just finished Mumbai - Goa via Pune - Kolhapur - Nipani route. On the highway (except when driving on tarred surfaces) my speed varied but i tried to maintain 100/110 whenever possible. Query. The ambient noise ( which i figured was tyre noise on asphalt highways) was very high at speeds above 90kmph . Windows were up through out and the aircon was on .

So why is that? Tyres need change ? Sound proofing issues ? anyone ?

regards

Re: What's that sound ??

Solenoid sound id say when it cuts in initially .

Smoke smell from vehicle ahead happens in recirculation mode in all cars of this segment. NTW.

My problem is my 26 days old 700kms run Vista from the day 1 gives a tak tak tak sound exactly thrice when the vehicle's AC is turned on. And more over at times even when the AC recirculate mode is switched on also i can smell the smoke from the vehicle before me. What could be the problem, the vehicle will be going for its first service on 25th April.

What is the tyre profile like? Some brands are known to be noisy.

Also, 90+ is a speed you could hear the tyre noise. Rougher the surface of the road, more the noise.

One possible reason could be incorrect tyre pressure.

Original tyres bridgestone . tyre pressure was ok... by profile i trust u mean the tread ...well its ok ..nothing great ..some people might change their tyres at this point but since my driving is just abt 3k km in a year... ( this trip was a one off ) i havent changed them yet..

Hey darthvader, I would suspect the wheel bearings.

Check this:

By tyre profile, I meant the size.

Are these the 1st set of tyres? 7 years and 51k kms means the tyres are long due for a change. Even if the treading is fine, the inner-walls could have developed cracks.

I'd suggest you think of replacing them (considering they are the 1st set).

It could be the tyres depends on how old the tyres are, also depends what tyres are you driving on and what profile? Some tyres are noisy. Also check the bearings.

Then you need to change the tyres my friend. Generally tyres give up after 40000 kms and the ones which come with the car do not last more than 40000kms. Change the tyres and the noise should go away.

I feel it is aerodynamic noise esp as it occurs after 90 kmph. Wheel bearing noise is there through out the speed range. While wheel noise changes dramatically with a change in road surface from bitumen to asphalt.

Re: Excessive external noise on highway at high speeds

Had a word with the HMP Manager Customer Care at Mumbai ( a very knowledgeable guy i might add , having dealt with him in the past ). He says noise is partly due to worn out tyres but more so that tyre noise on asphalt is normal at high speeds on all cars , which is further borne out by the fact that there is hardly any noise on tarred roads.

So i guess its time for tyre change as reco by others here too.

Thanks folks.

regards

Hey, apart from the thread wear, tyres also have a time after which the rubber gets hard and road noise increases notably. Also due to harder rubber, grip levels are significantly reduced.

Glad that you are changing the tyres. Go for Bridgstone Turanza's or Michlien XM1+.

No mate the smoke smell has completely disappeared after the replacement of ASSY ACTUATOR MOTOR.

So I think once properly maintained no cars of any segment will have this problem

Re: Excessive external noise on highway at high speeds

Turanza I have used in my other car and quite like the comfy feel post installation. have no idea about the Michellin's ... What abt warranty issues in these ? and how better are they compared to Bridgestone's Turanza? plus should i go for the original size ?or a size bigger ?
