Re: Hyundai Creta: Serious brake failure issue (must-read for all owners)

Even a random google review for a Hyundai service center here in Chennai mentioned the Creta's brake failure. There are quite a few pissed off customers out there!

Re: Hyundai Creta: Serious brake failure issue (must-read for all owners)

I was watching this thread closely as i have a 2017 Creta and had not faced any serious braking issues apart from very rare scenarios where ABS was kicking in early with the brake pedal turning stone hard and the juddering noise. Yesterday was different where the car was at approx 20-30 KMPH and the brake pedal turned stone hard with an awful juddering noise. My wife thought that something came off the car due to the noise. Travelled another 200+ km's post this and it did not reoccur. Not sure if i need it checked as it may not replicate!

Re: Hyundai Creta: Serious brake failure issue (must-read for all owners)

A big thank you to the Mod team for highlighting this very serious issue in our News section:-

https://www.team-bhp.com/news/brake-...-hyundai-creta

And thus it has found a space in our homepage as well:-

https://www.team-bhp.com/

Hopefully there is a way to pin this extremely important issue to both these pages.

We, the initial batch of 2015 Creta owners (most of us purchased our cars within 2 months of launch, with me getting mine within a week of the launch date), had started an online petition highlighting the same:-

https://www.change.org/p/hyundai-mot...-hyundai-creta

Plenty of other owners came forward in support, and it was forwarded to the high-ups at Hyundai India. I am told that the company is well-aware of this very serious issue, and it has occurred intermittently in other Hyundai cars too (i20, Verna), but they have never bothered to resolve it.

I was also told that the new Creta shares it's brakes & ABS unit with the Seltos, and that braking shouldn't be an issue anymore. Imagine my surprise when I started reading some reports of the Seltos also losing braking bite intermittently as well. (link)

Again, this issue might not be common for all Cretas (or all Hyundais, for that matter). At least, I hope it's not. For all those owners who haven't had an issue with the brakes or ABS till now - excellent & I am really happy for you.

But for those who have faced this and also brushed past certain death in their own horrific experiences of the failed braking, and these are more than just a few in number, a thorough investigation is really mandatory. Preferably by a third-party, independent investigating agency who is not arm-twisted or bullied by the parent MNC.

Re: Hyundai Creta: Serious brake failure issue (must-read for all owners)

Being a Creta owner this is definitely scary, very scary, there is also an issue since the very beginning of extreme brake judder, since it only happens after the brakes have warmed up after 10-15 kms and is best noticed at around 70-80 Km/h and above the service center has not been able to replicate the issue.

What they have done however is replace the brake disc with a repaired lathed one, this does fix the issue for a few days and then slowly it starts again.

They must have replaced it 2-3 times and the last time both the brake pads and discs were changed and even then the problem is back and it is so bad that the car shakes violently when applying more than 30% brake pressure.

I'am waiting for the brake pads to wear out and then replace them and a new brake disc from my own pocket (since hyundai only replaces it with repaired ones) and see if the problem goes away.

I'am not sure it will and it must be a known issue for sure, no reason why they will even replace the discs with repaired ones free of cost, that too multiple times, and why would they even have so many repaired brake discs lying around?

Must be a known design flaw and they don't want to do anything about it, what amuses me is this is one of the top 10 selling cars for a long time, how are they getting away with it?

I'll suggest you to try and get OEM replacement from Brembo's. It will not be a major difference but overall braking will be better.

I do remember contacting a Brembo supplier based in Goa a while back and he said there is no direct replacement for Creta at that time, can you provide me the details of the supplier where you got your Brembo's from and the cost if possible.
How has your experience been so far?

Re: Hyundai Creta: Serious brake failure issue (must-read for all owners)

As it has been mentioned that Seltos shares the same brake parts, I'm cross posting from another thread my experience with a braking situation. It is definitely a thing to keep an eye on, in the Seltos too.

The issue:

link

The diagnosis:

The following conditions can cause sudden brake pedal hardness -
1. When the engine is on the edge of stalling, because not enough air can be drawn from it to create the vacuum for the brakes.
2. If the brake pedal is "pumped" when ABS is active, because the system is designed to prevent this action.

When brake pedal is pressed, even one lift-off and press can be read by the system as pumping action.

Sorry, but the service center guys that told you this are wrong.

1) This issue is seen in both diesel & petrol cars. As diesel cars don't get their vaccum from the engine, the first point is rendered an invalid explanation.

2) The ABS module has an integrated pump to generate brake pressure when it is capable of releasing and reapplying brake pressure tens of times a second. Your brake pumping maybe once a second is not even close to that, and it should not drain brake pressure if the brake system is working correctly.

Here's the review that I spotted. This poor Creta owner still has no clue as to why his brakes failed. The Hyundai service guys have told him that it's a wheel wobbling issue!

Re: Hyundai Creta: Serious brake failure issue (must-read for all owners)

Very slow speed brake failures, like pedal turning hard can happen if there is leak the vacuum hose of brake power assist line.

To check if your hose works well do the following test:

Start the engine. Press the brake pedal. While holding the pedal down turn off the the engine.

A. If the pedal starts to move up and if you feel the pedal hardening, then there is a leak. Have it rectified at the workshop.

B. If the pedal stays where you are holding, then there is no leak.

C. After B, start pumping the pedal, if the pedal moves up bit by bit with every push, this also means the system is working well. The vacuum that was developed when engine was on is now slowly being released with every pumping action

Hope this helps in identifying the issue, which sometimes the workshop or trained mechaincs overlook and go straight to thinking there is a bigger problem to solve... Ramesh.

Here are some contact details of Hyundai Regional Offices across India (guess this should be listed in the owner's manual). This is the best bet to reach closer to Hyundai. Their customer emails/numbers won't yield any result. I used the information from here to contact the Area Manager, but no update from him now. Will wait for a week and then give him a call. Will keep the thread updated.

Re: Hyundai Creta: Serious brake failure issue (must-read for all owners)

It's gone, the thread is now gone from the home page.
  • It's quite a serious issue.
  • By now it can be confirmed that it is not a one-off issue.
  • It has been observed in vehicles ranging from various model/manufacturing years.
Then, why not let it stay in the home-page for some more time, let it stay in hot-threads section or other sections in the home page. Pin it to the home-page. Don't know if it was posted now in Facebook or not, if not, why not post it on Team-BHP's facebook page just as other issues were posted, nice if already posted.

Request our moderators to shoot an official mail to the higher-ups in the Hyundai seeking some explanations regarding the same.

Note: No intentions to defend or offend anyone or any-brand but to call for even-handedness and neutrality.

With respect to Creta, AFAIK, this issue is mainly with owners of SX(O) of the 2015 batch. I think from 2017 onwards there has been some change to the ABS software I feel (I may be wrong too).

Most of the reports I've read are of the initial batch ones and SX(O) specific.

Re: Hyundai Creta: Serious brake failure issue (must-read for all owners)

I have a 2016 manufactured Hyundai Creta Sx+ petrol. Recently I've seen abs warning light pop up on my dash after a service.

When I told the SA, he told me it was perhaps because of limited use of the vehicle ( 13000 kms in 3 years and particularly last year, where it has been standing still for 3-4 months at a stretch ) and he proceeded to delete the error code with an OBD scanner.

The vehicle was fine for a few days after that, but soon the same abs warning popped up again, which I noticed would go away once I put on some miles.

Throughout this ordeal, I've not felt any particular lose of braking power per se. Now, should I be worried regarding the sudden lose of brakes during driving in future?

The same error appearing soon after the deletion of the error code should not be taken lightly. In our family, we do have cars not driven for months and have no such warning light appearing.

And if you have read my ordeal, when the accident happened there wasn't any warning light on the dash. Earlier that day, the ABS light was on for 30 seconds and it disappeared on it's own.

So I would strongly recommend you to check the ABS sensor instead of just deleting the error code.

There are now numerous incidents reported here on TeamBHP. So why wait?
