Re: Car battery life - How long did your battery last?

The Amaron on my beat car Alto 2007 has crossed 8 years; was replaced in July 2010. It is still working without issues but now I am getting a bit nervous as this is mostly used by my dad and don't want him in a situation where he has to seek help in getting the car pushed or jump started.

So, is there a way battery health can be ascertained or is it better to get a new one?

Replacement would be best. However, you can visit a neighborhood battery shop and request for a voltage and gravity test. That would help determine the health of the battery. The same can be done at Maruti service centres too.

As mentioned above, you could just check the voltage at the terminal with the car in off state - a good battery will read about 12.7 or so.

A battery on its death bed will read closer to 12.0 or even a shade under that.

In general, same principle applies to any battery - good one will measure a slightly higher voltage (under no load). For ex: a 1.5V battery could measure 1.8 or so.

But if this one has served you well for 7+ years, its possible it will need a replacement anytime now. May as well be proactive and get it replaced with an equally good one.

Any decent multimeter will suffice to make the measurements.

Re: Car battery life - How long did your battery last?

Hello All,

I went to my FN battery shop to check my car battery today (OE Exide 4 years 11 months completed) on inspection the entire battery was dry, a strain was seen at the start, the voltage was below 11 V and I was recommended a battery change. The car is Wagon R VXi Petrol, Feb 2014 model.

I came back and ordered through Batterywale.com an Amaron (AAM-PR-00050B20L) Hi-Life Pro, 35 Ah, Left layout @ Rs 4,029/- price after the return of old Battery, waiting for the call from their representative for installation.

Will update thread after installation.

How was your experience with battery wale? I also need to replace my battery (5 years and 2 months old). It is showing some signs of age and service center has recommended for change.

Re: Car battery life - How long did your battery last?

Hello Guys,

The battery on my 20 month old, 31k Odo, Skoda Rapid is acting up. I had parked my car by the road for a quick bite and when I returned, she just wouldn't crank. All the electricals work fine including the power windows but the she just makes a rattling sound and just gives up.

My SA says this is because of the battery is beyond its 1 year life. I mean the battery was working perfectly fine like 15 mins ago!

I have called RSA to jump start but hard to digest the fact that the battery lasts only a year! Anyone with similar experiences?

This is strange that SA is saying so. I have not heard a battery with just one year life. Normally, car battery should last 3 to 5 years. See if your battery is covered under warranty.

The battery has a warranty of two years from Skoda. And as per other users on the forum, I am not the only one.

I have picked up an Excide Din 60 with a 3 year warranty.

I had similar experience in my Honda City. On a fine day early morning I started to my home at around 5.30am and after travelling for 1.5 hours stopped the car at an ATM. Took cash, and the car won’t start after that. Had to change battery as the battery was not at all charging and it was only 1.5 years old ‘sonic’ brand. I also got the same reply that oem battery came with 1 year warranty. Later I understood that for some weeks before this experience car was taking a little more time to crank than usual, but some how I did not pay much attention to it.

Actually, I realized the crank part after the battery was replaced Although the crank duration was playing in the back of my head but never really paid heed.

The difference was very evident after the replacement.

Re: Car battery life - How long did your battery last?

My Civic's battery, Amaron Pro, gave up suddenly day before yesterday. It went dead suddenly as much as it wasn't even able to light up the displays. Gave it a shot by charging it using Bosch C7 charger overnight. It was just able to crank the car when installed back but was dead again next morning. This was installed exactly 5 years ago, in Mar-2014.

Checked Exide; they quoted 8100 as the MRP. With 10% discount & Rs 700/- for the buyback, final price was Rs. 6600/-. I felt that was too high and checked with another shop which stocked both Amaron & Exide. I was okay with Exide because during last 2-3 decades of car ownership, not once has any Exide died on me prematurely. Have had good experiences with Amaron too, so I was open for both.

The other shop offered a better buyback of Rs. 900/- and finally quoted Rs. 5500/- for Exide and Rs. 5300/- for Amaron Pro (both carry warranty for 5 years). I went for Amaron Pro as the deal looked fine here. The printed MRP is Rs. 7300/-

Saket

My mercedes e class's( 2016) battery was changed under warranty. When I was buying it I got it scanned by Mercedes and they diagnosed the battery with low voltage. The new battery from Mercedes was 30k and the scan was 10k. The scan was worth it.

For most new car batteries, I think 5 years is the standard. Esp when the car is new and with OE equipment only. Among my new generation cars, I have never had any battery conking off before 5 years. This is across brands like Exide, Amaron & Standard Furukawa (now SF, taken over by Exide). With new generation, I just mean cars with alternators.

Saket

Thanks Saket. Mine is Ford Figo 1.5 TDCI. It is 1 year 8 months old and in stock condition. I mean, no additional equipment has been installed. And I am planing to keep her in stock condition only. Hope that battery will last long as I am looking forward to keep her with me as long as I can. I just love her so much (My Figo) .
