This is called Steering Centre Pinning. When they allign the car the steering at times does not point straight even though the car is alligned and goes straight even when one lets go of the hand on the steering for a short bit. This is supposed to be done at the time of allignment as the last time and can get quite irritating for the user, thought quite harmless.

Hope it was corrected satifactorily. They will just remove the steering with the car wheel pointed the way they would if the car were going straight and then fit the steering back in the straight forward direction / position. There is a nut below the horn button that needs to be removed with a spanner similar to the one used for removing the wheel nuts.

thanks a lot sir!

unfortunately this issue was not solved in the recheck. Steering remains as loosely fit as it was and they sent back the car as OK!
To my horror, the workshop guy told me when I called them that there is a problem in the under-body in form of a hit that I might have caused by harsh-riding a pot hole or something like that and claims that the work will cost me about 3k! When I asked him about the steering issues he was quiet. I am trying to get Tata Motors' attention into this issue. Hope they are able to help.

Well if there is a problem in the under-body he is most probably refering to the suspension components. Well since they were fine earlier it does imply that something has indeed gone wrong this could be due to the car going into and out of pothole at a higer speed that what it could manage.

3K is actually quite ok for a suspension related work, pls get it done ASAP as it will also eat into your tyres if not done soon besides making for unstable driving. You do need to get into further details as to why they believe this is related to harsh driving as they say and not a component failure, if this requires just one specific part to be changed then it could be that the part has failed sooner than it should and should then be claimed under warranty if they cannot show any noticiable dent or damage mark on the part (Shock, tierod, bush, lower / upper arms etc.) If it is multiple parts then it could indeed be that you did manage to damage them over rough roads.

Re: TATA nano - List of ALL issues

Love the thread. Gives almost all the issues that the Nano owners are facing.

Now, if only somebody could confirm which of these perennial issues have been fixed by Tata in Nano 2012

Cheers

Completed 25,000 kms in my Nano !!!

Friends,

I have successfully completed 25,000 kms in my 2010 March Nano LX . I am planning to write a long-term ownership report soon. Too busy officially for the next three weeks. Has to take some photographs also of the car after 25000 kms of usage.

Re: TATA nano - List of ALL issues

Wife's nano LX would not start one morning last week. The starter was turning over when given the key, but engine would not start.

So I called up the TATA helpline no. Very good interaction. The Customer Service girl took my details down and fixed the time of 2.30 pm for the mechanics to arrive.

With almost Swiss-like punctuality, they were at my door on time! Took me by surprise. The mechanics were from a nearby TATA Auth. Service center. They brought no tools with them , just used their battered TATA Estate to tow the Nano to the garage.

I followed them to the garage. They hooked up the diagnostic tool and identified the problem as a non-working fuel pump. I've never had a fuel pump fail on me in the last 22 years that I am driving. Anyway, they replaced it within warranty.

The pump is made in India by 'Continental'. The service center was fast and did not charge me a penny.

Now the 2 problems yet to be solved, because the garage does not see it as a problem: Poor brakes and hard clutch.

Is this the First Nano in country to touch this mark?
It surely is on team bhp.

CONGRATULATIONS Sir to you and your Nano.
Eagerly awaiting long term review and pics both interiors and exteriors.

Re: TATA nano - List of ALL issues

Guys I have a question, since I just bought a pearl white nano lx 2012 model, but I am still a bit rough on the edges regarding driving (I am a true blooded biker! ;-)) so I tend to stall the car occasionally, now I make sure to turn the headlights off before cranking it up again, but I did start it once with the AC switch 'ON' (since it happened in traffic) Now is that an issue and will it cause some problem for some components? Or does it really make no difference? (according to a quick google search) I wanted to know with specific regard to the nano, I know that good practice dictates (atleast in my head) that headlights,ac should be turned off, but is it really necessary? Like how the music system cuts off while cranking the engine, does the same thing happen with lights and ac?

Re: TATA nano - List of ALL issues

The ideal practice is to switch off all electricals before cranking the starter. I follow this practice for all cars, and I would think that the Nano needs safe loads on its electricals more than any other!
Don't know how the electrical cut off works, though.

Update on this issue. Went to another Tata service centre and got this done for free! It was just an alignment issue that had started with the first service.
Also in the next visit they are going to replace fuel pump since there was some issue with morning start off late as my car needed 5-6 cranks and even after starting the initial idle raving was not smooth. I will stick to this new service centre only.

Thanks for your help ACM Sir

Re: TATA nano - List of ALL issues

Well got my Nano "Starter Motor Upgrade" done this Monday. I drove down to Kudul Gate Prerana Motors (T.A.S.S). Told that will take the car today itself. The update takes precisely half hour, which they elaborate as one full day job. There was guy from the plant and two Prerana Techs. After the upgrade my car was stationed without any rhyme or reason. Had a few complains about noise from dashboard and back rear seat. Which as usual was not taken care?

The update includes as follows: -
1) Wiring Harness for Ignition Switch
2) Wiring Harness for Starter motor
3) Adding extra 3 fuse for accessories, Ignition and starter motor
4) Two relay one for supply cut off for ignition (over crank protection) and one for starter motor load relay.
5) Oil Filter replaced
6) Starter motor
7) Engine exhaust shield inside engine compartment.
8) Battery gets top cover with instruction "Do not connect anything directly to battery"

The car seemed a little peppy after I drove off from T.A.S.S. They claim the mileage will improve, have not noted the same.

So far have not noticed any starting issues.

Re: TATA nano - List of ALL issues

Hi folks,

I am writing on behalf of my BIL, who has done 22K kms in 13 months.

1. Overall plastic quality. Plastic ring around key hole cracked and cover of ORVM-base fell off. Also knob for rolling window glass comes off whenever operated.

2. Clutch gets hard with use, especially in monsoons.

3. Overall rattling is there, especially on bad road, even in new car.

4. Outside air leaking in cabin through door open lever pocket (inside). Prominent during winter.

5. Corrosion stains in some area.

Other nano owners requested to confirm the point no. 4.

Don't worry.

These are common problems in all the Nanos. My two year old Nano has both of the above issues from day one but I guess nothing much can be done about it and nothing has happened due to these either.

This happens. I noticed it when I had rolled down the window slightly for fresh air but stopped when windows were closed completely.
Rattling also is an issue but one can live with it. I have experienced rattling mainly when the car is in the 4th gear and even as its doing 55 plus speed.

Once the parking guys literally seem to have manhandled to ORVM and there is some prominent noise coming from there now. I have found no solution to it as of now.
