Hi folks! I am back with a new issue. :P

My 2016 Octy 1.8 StylePlus had its first service in Aug'17. In Dec '17 I got an error code on the MID that the Coolant is below reserve and needs to be resolved. Upon inspection, the coolant level was much below the Minimum level, with just traces to be seen. There is no leakage as of now, cause there is no drip or spot in either my home or office parking space. I contacted the SA, who told to fill her up with distilled water and watch the level. I filled her up to the brim, and within a month the coolant level is almost 55% of the entire tank level.
Has anyone faced a similar issue? If yes, what was your resolution.

I want to be better prepared when sending my car to the workshop for repairs to avoid any kind of high handedness from these eager-to-overlook SAs..

It is most probably the water pump that has packed up.

The water pump doesn't allow coolant to drip onto the ground when it is leaking. Guess the heat means the coolant evaporates into thin air leaving no signs of any leakage.

Look for a fine stream of dried coolant near to the water pump area although it is difficult.

A second possibility would be coolant mixing with oil but that seems to be remote to me atleast.

It might also be a loose pipe but you say there isn't coolant on the ground, so again chances seem to be less.

Get the car to the service centre. Coolant levels should never drop at all or reduce negligibly. I never had to top up the coolant in my TDI between services.

If it is the water pump, you might have to change the timing kit as well, since the water pump might have leaked coolant onto the timing belt. It depends on how severe the issue is. But don't worry, it will be covered under warranty if you have opted for the latter. You might only have to pay for the coolant.

The pump typically costs 7.5K to 8K. It's the timing kit that is expensive. (Don't know the exact costs but the total cost of water pump+timing kit comes to 20K+)

The standard warranty is for 2 years and mine's ending in Aug'18 . I have also taken the Skoda Shield, which is the extended warranty facility.
Won't this issue be covered in warranty itself?

Of course it will. Do not carry out DIY and be economical with the truth with them. Just lay out the issue and tell them to fix it.

This will be definitely covered under warranty. I had a similar failure in my Jetta and VW replaced the pump and the timing kit all under warranty. Zero expenses. As you have the warranty till August, no need to worry at all. Just take the car to the workshop and they will fix it.

I faced similar issue(in my TDI), nothing found on parking but very close inspection on the engine bay I found traces of coolant near the belt/pump. Took it to workshop and they confirmed the leak is from water pump and entire pump assembly replaced under warranty.

Well I had the same issue in my 2014 TDI in the first 6-8 months and my friend faced the same issue in his car too we just topped it up and it never cropped back again. 2 years later I faced an issue of the car overheating once and then the temperature gauge used to show a slight fluctuation which I had to make a video of. Post that the water pump was replaced in warranty.

Hi, folks, I own a 2014 Octi, had the same issue, coolant level is dropping, I could not find any leak or spots. Took the car to the service station, they kept the car for one day, said "No issues, will top it up." I refused to take the car back, then again after two days, they got back to me saying, water pump packed up.... Surprise, surprise, they don't have stock. Guess it took about a week or more for the part to arrive, changed it under warranty and running fine, so far so good.

A quick question - the recommended Tyre pressure for a full load of 5pax with heavy luggage is 36/46 as mentioned by Skoda. Have any one of you had this situation and went with the recommended pressure? I'll have to travel tomorrow with a heavy load, hence the question.

I did go with the recommended pressures and it worked well with 5 adults and full luggage with a full tank of fuel. So pls do get the tyres to 36/46 but do remember to bring it back to normal after the trip.

Thanks, that worked just fine. I didn't scrap any humps. After about 200km, the TPMS threw an error saying loss of air pressure. I then reset it and the error went away. Probably to do with the fact that it detected the unusual reading. So I do have my doubts if I can rely on the TPMS any longer!

Not just this one incident, but earlier I filled up at a roadside puncture shop with an even 33, and then went for a recheck at a fuel stop some 400km later, the tyres were inflated a good 42! TPMS never bothered!

My tyres are up for replacement. My current ones are Michelin Primacy 3ST and it has run about 55k kms. It can run for may be another 5K or so. But I already see lesser grip. So thinking to change it and not take any risk. Have no complaints against Primacy 3ST except the weak sidewalls. Any suggestions on which ones to go for now given my primary criteria now is performance?

Well, you're already running the best stock-sized tyre (205/55/16) readily available in IN! I suggest you buy another set as the alternatives like the Yoko C Drive2, Continental MC5, MRF Perfinzas, Bridgestone Turanza etc are relatively rarer than the all-rounder P3ST.

If you are open to running a non-standard 16" spec, you can check for the brand new 205/50/ZR16 Pilot Sport 4. However, I understand they difficult to source, are a lower profile so while the looks will be better (and performance must be superb), Skoda may cause issues with any related warranty claims and your car may scrape more on tall humps.

You can of course upsize in 16s to 225/50 available in Pilot Sport 3ST, but these are all 2015-16 stock and expensive. Unsure of 225/50/16s in other brands though.

You are right. To avoid any warranty issues I will stick to the stock size and go for the Primacy 3ST itself.

Mind you the MC5 are supposed to have a better steering feel and more grip than the P3ST. Search for the MC5 review thread plus other ownership threads and check for yourself.
