The first few batches were the original narrow cab trucks, 100% licenced clones of the Mercedes Benz truck L325. The Indigenous version came later, after they made changes to the vehicle so as to better suit the indian conditions, like the widened cab and air vents on either side.

The Sikh gentleman in the picture, I believe, was the owner of the Bombay based “Sandhu Transport”, now made famous as the transport company whose trucks were used as the preferred ‘Hit & Run’ murder weapon by the villainous henchmen of the main antagonist of Bollywood films right upto the 90’s.

Looks to be Farida Jalal or Sharmila Tagore, from the side profile of the face.

The Mercedes buses in the background too are attractive (though in the childhood, I used to be scared of this face).

The 1210 model was introduced in 1964 and no, it didn't have the suffix "D" attached to it at that time! Its introduction coincided with the completion of 10 years of Tata's collaboration with Daimler Benz. 1210 was the ruggedised/Indianised version of the original Mercedes Benz L 312, offering higher payload.

Tata 1210 became 1210 "D" in 1970 with the introduction of direct injection technology which Daimler had introduced in Germany in 1964 (in the engine OM 352) but which wasn't passed on to Tata immediately. Tata obtained rights for DI technology through a fresh collaboration agreement signed with Daimler in 1970, post the expiry of the original 15-year collaboration agreement in 1969. However, the new collaboration was purely for technology and design rights for OM 352. It didn't give Tata the right to use Mercedes Benz name or logo, unlike before. Also, the royalty was fixed at a lump sum fee of 1 million pounds instead of on percentage of revenue revenue basis as was the case earlier.

Conversion of 1210 to 1210D helped in reducing fuel consumption by 15% even as power jumped by 15 HP!

Cheers harit
L 325 was the big brother of L 312 that Tata was license manufacturing in India. At 7274 CC, its engine was substantially bigger than L 312's 4580 CC. Daimler wanted Tata to sell these heavy duty Made-in-Germany trucks in India alongside the medium duty L312 that was being produced locally. Some trucks were supplied to Tata for this purpose and apparently the truck in your photo is one of those. However, as Govt. of India policy discouraged imports, the practice wasn't continued.

Yes, the headlamps in L 325 were bumper mounted which wasn't the case with L 312. L 325 also had a longer bonnet. The two trucks were visually similar but only superficially.

Reproduced below are pics of L 312 and L 325 respectively:

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread

For some one who wants to see the real thing, there is a maharashtra Police owned Leyland Hippo crane parked in the Bhor ghats in the Police parking lots just down hill from Amrutanjan bridge.
One very well maintained Green colour Mercedese 7.5 ton truck is ocassionally seen in the lane opposite IOC petrol Pump near Pune Maldhakka chowk.

They were noticable as the only LCV with a column mounted gear stick, and a full bench seat to seat three.
