Yes it did. The same as in the W126, American spec started with a 300/350SD/SDL.

While in the W126 there were many engine failures as a result of weak connecting rods and excessive oil consumption. Though these were somewhat corrected in the W140, the engine was not really a success.

Yes the Stingray previously owned by Actor Mehmood and originally Red in colour. Can be seen in this song from his film Ginny (his daughter) aur Jhonny. This song from the film has almost the entire song shot in the car.

Right on Wasif. One can see the carbs and moreover these W108s never came in a diesel version. Sadly many were dieselised as HArit has rightly pointed out below.

They never came as diesels, only petrol. 'S' class diesels came much much later, I think after 2002. But a number of cars did get converted to diesel, these are not original.
These cars had fuel supplied by carbs and also injection pumps. If carbs, then original only two 2-barrel carbs of Zenith. And nothing else.
I have a 280S, and was nick named rocket, at the signal I could just take-off.
Many cars at that time had two tone colour scheme, normally body a darker colour and the roof a lighter colour. White roof with yellow, pale blue or even red was common. My dads Opel was crimson with a black top originally.
German police cars were a similar shade of green with white mudguards.
These 108's are icon cars, all parts are available in Germany, and when there is an opportunity one should add this to his collection. In their class they had no competition.

Cheers harit

Nope, the first diesel S class was the W116 300 SD and SDL replaced in around 1980 by the W126 SD. These were straight 5 cylinder turbo charged motors upto 85 which were used in the W123 300 Turbo Diesel and were predominantly made and sold in the US market, and thereafter straight 6 after 1985. Ajmat had rightly explained below.

Indrol, now Castrol sponsored a lot of vintage cars events in the past. Gave all participants an oil tin, somehow on many occasions the oilfilter was clogged and oil did not trickle down.
This picture taken outside NCPA, Nariman Point where a couple of rallys were held. Next to it is the Corvette. Both cars survive well in good condition.

Cheers harit

Merc Classifications

I saw on some posts earlier some doubts about the classification of the 180 as a C or E class?

Here is my take:

I bought this poster from the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart earlier this year (only thing I could afford)

It has a classification of cars under different categories:

Reprasentationswagen (Doesn't translate on Babelfish)

All the big cars including the 300 and the 600 Pullman

Oberklassewagen (Upper Class)

Cars like the 220s and S500

Mittelklasse (Middle Class)

The 180a b and the latest E class as well as the C class and also the A class. They are all in this group

Sportwagen

No prizes for guessing which cars fall in this category right

I will try to take some snaps of the poster and put them up. Got them framed as they were getting spoilt. Framing cost me 10x the cost of the posters

Arif has done up (done know if I can say restored) a W116 recently. Stunning those cars are!! It is parked covered in the parking lot behind the Bandra Talao petrol pump. His brother keeps and sells some of his stock of cars from there (there was a new caddy, a hummer (fugly) and an assortment of goodies like the new Beetle Cabrio and an RX8) the last time I was there

If you look in the first pic, behind the Terracan there is a covered long wheelbase W126 560SEL (In urgent need of some extensive TLC)
