Rumour: Maruti could launch BS6 1.5L diesel engine in 2021

According to a media report, Maruti is reconsidering its plan to discontinue its diesel engines and could re-introduce its 1.5-litre diesel engine in BS6 guise.

Maruti is likely to stop offering diesel variants of its cars after April 1, 2020, when the BS6 emission norms come into effect. However, the report suggests that it might re-introduce a BS6 compliant 1.5-litre diesel engine in 2021.

To make it economically viable, Maruti Suzuki might supply the the 1.5-litre BS6 diesel engine to Toyota in the future.

In FY2018-19, Maruti is said to have sold about 5 lakh diesel vehicles. This number is expected to fall to 2.5-3 lakh units this year. It is believed that the re-introduction of the 1.5-litre diesel could help increase the volume to earlier levels.
