Excellent scoop pics by fellow BHPians, here I want to share a couple of pics of chevy sail sedan doing test runs on the NH-8. I caught them on my daily commute to gurgaon.

My first impressions about the car:
1. Big on space. Seems it will offer best-in-class boot space. Folks in Delhi-NCR would love to fit a CNG tank in there.
2. One of the engine options (I guess the 1.4L Petrol) is really quick on the road. I was having a tough time catching up with the cars.
3. There were total of 3 test vehicles, all with GJ number.
4. An aggressive pricing by chevy can really hit the Ventos and Vernas hard.

Sorry for the repeat pic, here's the second one.

I spotted the new Chevy hatchback today in Juhu, Mumbai. I think it was the new U-VA ? It was about the size of the i20 and in terms of styling reminded me of a modernized Palio

New Chevy's caught testing...

Caught a couple of slightly camouflaged Chevy's on the Bangalore outer ring road today. Unfortunately could not get the faces of these cars. They realized I was clicking away, so slowed down and parked by the roadside. Looks like the new Sail hatch and sedan. Fit and finish seemed good. Now sure if any of them were running diesels.

Autocar review of the sail hatchback is out. Check it here http://www.autocarindia.com/Review/3...est-drive.aspx.

Diesel is powered by the national engine. Petrol is quicker than the swift to 100 Kmph dash. Interesting!

Going by the review of Auto Car, I have this feeling that Sail with its Hatch Sibling UVA could achieve what its predecessors like Beat and Aveo could not achieve, which is to make Chevrolet as the serious Mainstream player in India Market!!!!!! Good review considering the Low Expectations. Suits me if the Sail-3 Box is a good car too. I for one don't like new Dzire and Etios, Manza is too big a car for self drive plus comes with hassles of Tata ownership.

I too cant help but have the same feeling. But I am a little disapointed. I mean its something like 6 years since the MJD came in the swift, from then on we have seen it on so many cars. The ritz, the sx4, ertiga, punto, linea, indica, manza, vista, beat (with one cylinder less) and now the sail. I mean its a good engine and all that but a little bit of variety wont hurt, would it?

I hope atleast the sedan doesn't have the same engine with a VGT and has something else to offer.

I thinks its only due to some stupidity on GM's part to even allow proliferation of this engine so much Nevertheless, I think its GM and Hyundai are the only ones when it comes to Engine variety.

Think about it, Spark (1.0 Petrol), Beat (1.2 Petrol and 1.0 Diesel) , The SAil UVA (1.2 Petrol and 1.3 Diesel) AVEO (1.4 Petrol and 1.6), Tavera (2.5 Diesel and 2.0 Diesel) Optra (1.6, & 1.8 Petrol and 2.0 Diesel) Cruze (2.0 Diesel) and Captiva with 2.0 Diesel Engine. Looking at the number of cars GM sells per month this is a too huge an engine line-up

The shut lines even on the test mule are superbly tight, and also on the vehicle tested byACI. With the national engine under the hood, it shouldn't be a problem maintaining the car, with spares readily available. I know Chevys age gracefully, with little or no rattles, and are also one of the few vehicles that do not have a short travel suspension like the Marutis and Hyundais used to (haven't sat in a new one from either in a while, so can't say about the new gen ones).

I don't see why Chevy should be expected to reinvent the wheel. The VGT diesel is an accomplished engine, and they might just tune it slightly to suit the Sail and their own criteria for driveability. Not messing with it will also mean that they can price it competitively, not having to pay royalty for the engine.

Now, it's confirmed they are calling the Hatch Sail U-VA.
Swift's rear seats are benchmark, Really?

Going with the review, the Sail surely heats up the segment further.

re: SCOOP: Chevrolet Sail sedan caught testing. *Clear PICS on Page 9, 11 & 18*

Excerpts from the ACI review of Chevy Sail. Link here
Quote:
  • GC - petrol (174mm) and diesel (168mm)
  • Sail has 42% level of local content, will be up to 65% in the near future
  • Interiors not particularly upmarket and plastics feel a bit cheap
  • Power window buttons are placed ahead of the gear lever
  • The interior is very functional
  • The front seats are quite comfortable and well bolstered
  • Amazing amount of legroom on offer, headroom isn’t as generous though.
  • Seating position at the rear is brilliant
  • Sail is decently well equipped and comes with two front airbags and ABS on the top-end version.
Sail Diesel
  • Uses 1.3L, 75 PS SDE [Small Diesel Engine] engine which is same as Fiat MultiJet 1.3L aka National Engine.
  • The diesel has a bit of turbo lag, but it’s not as pronounced as on the Swift.
  • Takes 15.2 seconds to get to 100kph, and in 22.9 seconds for 120.
  • In-gear acceleration is quick.
Sail Petrol
  • Petrol engine is a 1.2 BDOHC, uses twin overhead cams and all-aluminium construction.
  • Idle is smooth enough and the engine is quite responsive at low speeds
  • The Sail petrol sprints from 0-100kph in just 14.6 seconds – quicker than the Swift
  • In-gear acceleration is strong too, especially in third.
  • The Sail’s all-new F17 five-speed manual gearbox has a short throw and is precise

Bloody cheap Chinese stuff

Chevy, can you give us some properly engineered cars instead of some cheap trash (all in the name of cost cutting? Or it is 'value' that is the buzz word these days).

I think this will do more harm than good to Chevy's image. Just like the Etios twins has done to Toyota's image. Mind you, the Etios twins have raked in and will continue to rake in decent numbers with such stuff. If adding to the bottom line is the only way moving forward for Chevy (doesn't always work in the long run if you don't maintain a 'quality' image; I can quote many case studies). To me, this also joins the list of 'jugad' vehicle present in the country today. Let me list the one I can think of:

1. Maruti DZire
2. Tata Manza
3. Mahindra Quanto
4. Etios Twins

Interesting to note that I have not included the likes of Renault Duster, VW Up! type cars in it, even though they are also built to cost. That's coz they don't compromise on engineering front at all. In all, welcome to the 'jugad' club, Chevy Sail UVA

Disclosure: I own a Chevy Beat bought by my sis in the family. So, I am not opposed to Chevy in any way. Just that I find this cheap way of cost cutting very derogatory to the customers.

Look at the Rear seat and Legroom, It's awesome, Might be segment best, Though headroom is not that good.

And rear seat looks very comfortable from the pictures
