My timings were as follows:
Tirupati Bypass, 0 kms, 1153 am
NH18 Puttalapattu, 57 kms, 1238 pm (I did not take the direct Tirupati-Pileru road)
Pileru, 43 kms, 107 pm
Madanapalle, 57 kms, 200 pm
Kadiri, 85 kms, 312 pm
Mudigubba, 36 kms, 340 pm
Ananthapur, 59 kms, 415 pm.

That meant 336 kms in 4.5 hours.

NOw the other sectors:
Madras-Chitoor should take you 2.5 hours at most, if not less.
From Ananthapur, a fast driver should not take more than 3.5 hours to reach Hyderabad

I am planning to drive from Chennai to Mattapalli in my Figo. Route decided is to take NH5 till Chilakaluripet and then left to Narasaraopet. Ater that I am confused as mapsmyindia and google give different routes. Can some one help me in taking a good route (dont mind circular, but the roads need to be better).

I drove Chennai to Nagpur via Hyderabad on 9/10 September 2011. My Linea left Orchards, Arcot Road, Vadapalani, Chennai at 6:05 pm on 9 Sep, entered Hyderabad by 6 am the next day, continued the journey and reached Peanut, Nagpur, yesterday at 2:24 pm including breaks.

I took the route Chennai>Chilakaluripeta>Narasaraupeta>Karempudi>Ma cherla>NagarjunSagar>Hyderabad. The roads were superb bettween Chennai and Chilakaluripeta & Nagarjuna Sagar and Hyderabad. There were some bad stretches between Chilakaluripeta and Nagarjuna Sagar with craters, potholes, etc. My Linea bottom-scraped four times in these bad stretches with just me and my wife plus luggage on board.

I am a regular user of the route you suggested from Chennai to Hyderabad.
Last week tried this route Hyd-Kurnool-Ananthpur-Devanahalli-Vijaypura-Kolar
Mulbagal-Chittor-Ranipet-Chennai.
The roads are all in good condition.This is a longer route but the running timing
was the same.

The other route is N.Sagar-Macherla-Dachepalle-Piduguralla-Narasaraopet-Chilakaluripet.
Most of the volvos from Hyd-Chennai route take this road.

Doctor saheb, how much longer was the distance? This looks like a better alternative.

This addiction to four lane bug seems to be the culprit.
It is close to 130-140kms longer than through N.Sagar-Chilakaluripet.
It was a comfortable drive and not much strainful driving.
My family enjoyed the drive back via Pallikonda-Gudiyatham-Mulbagal-Devanahalli
route as there was lot of greenary.

Chennai-Redhills-NH5-Nayudupet-Nellore-Ongole-Chilkaluripet-Narsaraopet-Karempudi-Macherla-N.Sagar-Hyd.Expect some rough sections between Narsaraopet & Macherla.But otherwise its good.

Guys i just did the above route last night and had a terrible drive from ongole roundabout till macherla. Some potholes are ridiculously sharp and had my car (nhc) literally beached on one. Was lucky to drive away without any damage other than a visible bump in the underbody.

I dont recommend the route especially if its a night drive. A drive during the day at the cost of some time lost is still possible.

The other option is to come via Kadapa.Nayudupeta-Srikalahasti-Tirupati-Rayachoti-Kadapa-Tadipatri-Gooty-NH7-Kurnool-Hyd.Join NH7 at Gooty instead of at Kurnool as this would give you more distance to drive on the excellent 4laned NH7 and cover more distance quickly.

I am planning to do Hyderabad to Ongole on Wednesday. I zeroed on these routes re-searching team-bhp posts.

1. Hbad - Narketpally - Nalgonda - Piduguralla - Chilakaluriprta - Ongole
2. Hyderabad-Nagarjuna Sagar-Piduguralla-Narasaraopet-Chilakalurpet-Ongole
3. Hyderabad - Nagarjuna Sagar - Macherla - Addanki - Ongole

I am not very keen on the first one, due to heavy traffic. I have been told that 3rd one is pretty bad in some stretches. I will go by the 2nd option, unless someone suggests an alternate.

Suggestions regarding eating options are welcome.
