Nikon D3100 is a fabulous model for getting started with DSLR.
You can even consider the newly announced D5100.

The lenses are mostly made in Japan. Some trickle down effect should be expected, I suppose.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Most lenses are assembled in Thailand or China using parts including optics sourced from Japan and other countries.

Only the pro lenses ( I am aware that some people dont believe in this 'pro' tag) and high end camera bodies are in made in Japan at factories that were affected by the tsunami and quake. Nikon's FX bodies are assembled at the Sendai factory and their lenses at Tochigi.

If you need a high end Nikon DSLR or lens, get it now before supplies run out.

Regards,

Re: The DSLR Thread

After dilly-dallying for almost a year, dad has finally agreed to buy me a DSLR. A few questions :

1) I am keen on a Nikon D-90. But it falls outside my budget. I thought I would buy the body only and buy an used lens. Your suggestion on this?

2) Also, what lens to buy? I am not looking at anything in particular i.e wildlife/portrait/landscape. Would be happy if a lens serves all the 3 purpose along with general day-to-day activity.. I am rookie who uses a Canon Powershot A710IS mostly in Auto mode. I don't even know how to operate the manual modes. At the moment, I can't afford dedicated lens for different purposes. Hence I am thinking about buying the D-90 with lens (whatever the company provides as a package).

3) A friend is returning from Dubai in 3-months time, should I buy it from there or buy it in India(price difference of around 6k INR)? Does Nikon provide global-warranty?

Re: The DSLR Thread

+1 to that Tanveer, DXO tests on the sensor also points best-in-class performance in the APC space. Lesser noise, greater dynamic range etc.

Actually there is expected to be significant impact on account of the earthquake. I remember reading an article that production units of Canon, Nikon and Sony were shutdown.

Cheers!

Re: The DSLR Thread

Not just the high-end but most of the Canon DSLRs are made in Japan. My 500D bought from Bangalore is Made in Japan. But in cases of lenses, I believe only the pro range is from Japan.

Re: The DSLR Thread

^^ Looks like the higher ISO does bring in a lot of noise; or is it because you have reduced the res while uploading on the site? Any day time shots?

Just want to know if anyone has better thoughts other than D3100 ?

Are you not interested in Canon 550D ? the difference will be around 3-4k, but 550d can be considered better than an entry level DSLR as per the experts...

Nothing taken. Just testing high ISO 2500. Its as noisy as ISO 1600 on my 350D

Re: The DSLR Thread

Here is a picture I shot today on my 1000D using my 70-300 Sigma. Shot settings:

f/5.6; ISO 800; 1/160; hand held

Not bad for an entry level DSLR, if I may say so myself. BTW, my pro-jpeg rant notwithstanding, I shot the picture in RAW. Realised it was overkill since all that I needed to do was a little bit of curves adjustment, some sharpening and saturation adjustment. Does this mean I am finally getting 'there'?

Re: The DSLR Thread

Pawan,

I guess others answered your question. If I am going to spend that much money, I might as well get the 7D. What I really don't like is the plastic body of 60D and I don't see much of a value buying it over the 50D or 40D. So yeah, if I don't get the 7D, I'll get a 50D.

navin_bhp,
Yep, I had called them on Friday and they do have the 7D in stock. I hope they have it when I call them in a week's time.

And I see a blue moon? Have never seen a blue sky with a blue moon at night before . I guess you'd have to re-process the RAW with the right WB (and that's why you have to shoot RAW! )

There are differences between the Nikon D3100 and the Canon 550D. Although, for a newbie/amateur, these differences do not matter much. I had prepared this table (attached image) for a friend at a time when the price difference between these two was more than 12k. Though, now, with a difference of 3-4k, you need not think too much and simply follow your heart. Like @thelightening, mine would go to Canon & the 550D.

Re: The DSLR Thread

What has dynamic range got to do with "Low light Performance".
Dynamic range can be useful even in good light.
For low light performance you need to check high ISO SNR

Thanks for you update Remington & lightening. My budget is a stick 30K for the camera + 18-55 mm lens. So my best fit is D3100. I see the difference is resolution 14 (D3100) - 18 (5100/550D), Continuous Shooting 3fps (D3100) - 3.7 fps (5100/550D) & video - yes autofocus (D3100)- no autofocus (550D). I happy with this feature of D3100.

On question here, Do you think there might be a huge difference in the photo output/noise of D3100 compared to D5100/550D?
