It would be good if she has a mobile phone so that we can contact her. Budget is around 5k-7k. Brands preferred - Nokia, Samsung, LG. Phone will be mainly used for calls, messages and a decent music player (FM function would be great). I am planning to buy from Croma as it is the nearest to my place. Pour in your suggestions guys!

Thanks
If music is a priority, Nokia X2 and X2-01 would be good options.

You could also get some decent touch screen phones in 7k price range, but my personal opinion is that school kids should not be spoilt with fancy phones at a tender age because these fancy gadgets could distract them from their studies.

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

After much deliberation between Android based smartphones ( Galaxy Ace, LG Optimus Black , Galaxy S , Motorola Defy ) and the Symbian^3 based ones ( N8 , E7 , X7 ) upto ~20k . Decided to give Nokia one chance and got the N8 , battery life being the most imp factor and something about Google's privacy handling makes me nervous.

Anyway - it's a month since I got it, I get 2 days of use on a charge (it's down to half or less by the end of day 2 ). I haven't started full-fledged use yet, just periodic FB/Gmail. Maybe once I start using more of the 'smart', it will last less. Performance doesn't seem slow, but some apps do sometimes. Played a little NFS too, yet to try other games (cough, Angry Birds). Camera strangely feels weak in some flash shots.

Also installed the Anna update, and while it seems to have a slight improvement in battery life, the icons look weird, I definitely prefer the original icons. Didn't browse much on the enhanced browser or the old one, though. Only tried 2 apps aside from default ones - TOI , Shazam and have installed but not used Snaptu and UpCode.

@saanil; You can save yourself a packet since a Smartphone is not required. Go for a Nokia and you may even have change for your 7k. They are very rugged, Symbian is stable, and so youu will not do wrong. Of course there are sammy's with their own OS which are cheaper than the Androids.

Ricci, is there any difference in touch response? Does OVI Maps require an update after ANNA update?

Well, they won't. This is one more reason: Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 is the most stable mobile phone OS | ZDNet

I have had android os from one year or so and no memory leak ,OS locks or forced shutdowns .

It depends on how to maintain your car , all ripping and no maintenance is bad .

Now, who is being biased? Windows Phone 7 is not Windows. It is an entirely new mobile OS with no connection to WinMobile OS or MS-Windows. The author has clearly mentioned that he has used every possible mobile OS out there for considerable time. If you have used WinPhone7 for some time and find his observation incorrect, then do tell us why he is wrong.

I have two Android phones at home (Defy & WildfireS) and no reason to plug WinPhone7.

Doesn't it make even more unstable ? .like 1.0 version ? . We all know how good are 1.0 versions .
Windows is windows irrespective of OS .But they make some good software ,but nothing good out of the box , need a good set of mods to keep it stable .

You missed my additional info in previous post .

Lets end this OT .

That's the trouble. You are guessing it must be bad without even trying it. I have no plans on buying WinPhone7 since I am happy with Android. But I won't trash an OS I haven't used, or needlessly suspect the credibility of a reviewer until I see contrary experience.

I would have moved this to WinPhone7 thread, but there isn't one yet. The WinMobilePro thread is not a good candidate, that OS became so crappy (I owned 3 WinMobilePro phones) I don't want put WinPhone7 in the same thread.

Well said!
I am a WP7 user, and I am really happy with the OS. My previous phone was an Android, and personally I am happy that I made the switch. WP7 maybe lacking a bit on features and the no. of apps available, but it’s very stable and fits my requirements very well. At this point I don’t see myself going back to Android.

Is it a really 1.0? Microsoft never releases any 1.0 without numerous alpha, beta, RC1, etc., none of major companies release careless 1.0 anymore. BTW, my team develops for Windows, Linux, HP-UX, MacOS, iOS, Android and Blackberry. Despite my 2 decades of experience, I have to try it before passing judgment on a new product. May be I lack instinct.

Yes, I needed to buy same day since her phone died two times in a day. I was leaving for Manipal and couldn't opt for online shopping.

I can't post any review yet since I have hardly seen the phone since then. But wife and son are quite taken to the phone. It is really small and cute.
