re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Hi guys, I currently own a dell inspirion. Need to buy another laptop, mainly due to the fact that i will be travelling a lot more, and wife will need one laptop at home.

Since the current laptop only has VGA and Analog audio out, i need to buy a laptop that will give me good connectivity with Home entertainment systems.

The primary requirements are:-

HDMI port ( 1.4, so that i get both audio / video out).
Optical audio out (if possible0.
14 inches screen.

I mainly want to get HD video out to my LCD via HDMI out.
At the same time, i should also be able to get DD / DTS Audio out to an Audio receiver. Do i need an optical out from laptop for this? Or can i take DD / DTS audioo out to LCD via HDMI, and then take this audio from LCD to Audio receiver via Optical out of the TV.

1/2 Ghz RAM. HDD Size doesnt matter.

The motherboard may be intel / AMD.

And last but not the least, want to spend as less as possible.
25 grands or so may be.

Any suggestions for this configuration?

If you are looking for a unit for travelling in terms of reliability you cannot go wrong with Toshiba. Acer have some very nifty units but we had problems with the batteries of our 3810's. I hear that other (and newer) models do not have this problem.

When I went to Croma Retail, Toshiba offered the best value for the package - they were the cheapest laptop with an Intel Core i5 2nd generation processor. I compared it to other similar laptops and Toshiba did have a real price advantage without cutting back on any of the other components.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Vikas,

The Core i5 2nd generation processor present in your new Lenovo Ideapas Z370 beats the Core i5 1st generation processor by a significant margin so I'm pretty sure everything that took almost forever on the old Core 2 Duo would be much quicker on your new laptop.

BTW, does the LED screen provide a greater angle of viewing or greater clarity than the display on your old HP laptop?

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

As I posted earlier I was able to buy an i7, 8GB, 2GB, 750GB (no OS) for under 50k from Asus (K535V). The unit is quite reasonable, but is heavy (2.7kg) and 15.6".

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Picked up a Toshiba Satellite Laptop C640-X4012 from Flipkart for 28,870.
One of the factors that tilted the scale was sgiitk's comment re Toshiba's durability in his post#3407 - thanks, pal.
Awesome fast delivery by flipkart; placed the order @ 11.40pm Monday night, after agonising a bit between the Toshiba & Dell Vostro1550, and the laptop was in my hands @ 9.30AM Wednesday morning,COD!
Great specs for the price-2nd Gen i5,4GB DDR3 1333mhz,500GB,14" HD LED etc.
Build quality is quite nice, lets see how it works out, in the long run.
The prev laptop was a Dell Inspiron 6000 - horrible build quality, gave a lot of hassles with breaking hinges/lcd frame, failing ODD, breaking keys, all after the one year warranty , of course.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

I am planning to buy a laptop and came to know that some models are coming with inbuilt WiMax. When I went to several dealers they had no idea about what wimax is. I was keen on buying this because if it works with my BSNL wimax connection then I'll have wireless broadband everywhere in my city atleast. Anyone here using lappy with wimax?

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Guys, My uncle is planning to buy a Dell Inspiron 15 online and it is priced at 30k on letsbuy.com, Do you guys know any other better online site with good price and offers?

Ebay has the winter offer going on where in you purchase stuffs above 20k and you get a micromax phone worth 3k or a fujifilm camera worth 4k, but unfortunately there aren't any good deals on dell laptops.

My advice is that if you are in the US and doing Black Friday shopping goto Radio Shack rather than places like Walmart or Best Buy.

Black Friday at Radio shack lasted all of 15 minutes. It opened at 5:30. I was there at 5:10 and was the first person. By 6AM the sale was over.
The battery on this laptop is dying.

Is it possible to buy it online in India. Any website recommendations?

Or is it much cheaper to pick it up in the US and have it shipped here.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Guys,

I'd seriously recommend looking at the Acer TimelineX if you're looking for a new laptop.

Specs: Intel 2nd Gen Core i5 2450M @ 2.5Ghz
8GB DDR3 1333
13.3" HD LED Monitor
500GB HDD 5400rpm
Intel HD Graphics
Genuine Windows 7 Premium Basic 64bit
Price: $530.

What's great about it:
  1. Phenomenal battery life. I usually get 6-8 hours and considering this is a full-fledged laptop and not a netbook, that's phenomenal.
  2. Very responsive keyboard
  3. Extremely thin and light - it's no Macbook Air, but it's not chunky and heavy either.
  4. Multi-touch gesture-enabled touchpad
  5. With it's brushed-aluminium finish and sleek profile it's also not exactly bad to look at

Now, I don't have a desktop at home. I am seriously considering buying a Dell Inspiron One 2320 Desktop [instead of a laptop as I already have one] costing Rs 60,255. I am not finding this particular configuration in flipkart. Can I go ahead with this one? If so, shall I buy now or after budget? Kindly enlighten me.

The trend today is to move away from Desktop to a Laptop, so I am wondering why do you need a desktop. Of course in certain cases the Desktop rocks, but that is if you are into heavy processing and/or require a really large real estate in terms of monitors, else for casual work a Laptop is a better option as
- It has a smaller footprint, hence a smaller desk
- No UPS required
- Is portable

In my case I require a fast multicore solution, with tons of disk space and acres of display, so I have
- 2 x quad core Xeon
- 3TB HDD space
- 2 x 24" (1920x1200) and 1 x 19" (1600x1200) monitors

Barring hard core CPU intensive jobs and design work, when all that horse power is not needed, the four of us in the family use our own Laptops for Office, Surfing and other mundane tasks. In fact now my sons have started using Android phones for most of their net access, so that even the Laptops are used minimally.
