There is one more feature that I read about recently: jumping to specific chapters in the book. We can know if the book has this option by looking at the percentage bar. It should be divided into multiple segments, each segment representing a chapter/bookmark.

re: Amazon Kindle - Touch & Tablet Version launched

Guys,

I am planning to get the Kindle Wi-Fi + 3G, available at $139, Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 6" Display, 3G Works Globally - Latest Generation: Kindle Store, don't really mind a few ads if I can save around $50.

I will be billing it to a relative in Canada and she will bring it over next month. Now, I have a couple of queries and would be thankful if current owners can help me:-
  1. Honestly, my usage would be mostly PDF files (legally as well as pirated copies), newspapers & journals(that's why the 3G option), but this may change down the line.
  2. I read that we can have books/newspapers downloaded automatically to Kindle using Calibre/kindlefeeder. Is that true?
  3. Is the Kindle body scratch resistant? If yes, to what extent? Which colour should I go for? I'm a bit inclined towards White as it is in these days.
  4. Are there any cheap (<= $10) covers available that I can order in US/Canada?
  5. There is an option to move my existing Kindle account to Amazon.com so I can even view/download content not available to our region (Asia Pacific). Is it advisable doing that?
Based on the requirements, is Kindle the right choice for me and more specifically, should I go for 3G version or stick to Wi-Fi?

Regards,
Jaspreet Singh

Thanks for the link govigov.

But the problem is that even the bare basic model is coming out to be expensive than the Kindle Wi-Fi + 3G option that I am planning to go for (Rs 6999 for the Wink against around 6300 for the Kindle).

Add to that, the wink is a lesser know brand against the Kindle and there is more support available online for Kindle .

I may be wrong, but that's just my 2 cents.

Jaspreet Singh

Is there any software to convert Notepad files to the Kindle format. I have a lot of technical notes in Notepad format.

calibre can convert almost everything to kindle format and email to your kindle account so you can receive wirelessly (as long as it's not copyrighted). It can also download news and do the same. Or you can just connect via USB and it will transfer .

I believe you can also email txt files to your kindle account directly.

I downloaded Calibre. It can convert from other E-book formats to Mobi (Kindle format) but .txt & .doc is not included in the options list of input files.

re: Amazon Kindle - Touch & Tablet Version launched

Ever since I bought Kindle, I have stopped buying paper books. So my wife is up in arms now saying she doesn't get to read books anymore. I am too protective of my Kindle. That means I have to get another Kindle for her.

BTW, the inventor of eBooks passed away last week: Michael S. Hart - Gutenberg May he rest in peace.

Well She can always use a Kindle App on a Tablet or a smart phone

I know Kindle itself is more convenient but if you have a device which can be used then why not. I am not an avid reader so use Kindle app on my phone & iPad.

Hello, those are backlit unlike Kindle. How long can you read? I read at least 2-3 hours on Kindle everyday. And charge it once in a month.

Yeah That's why I said that smart-phone & iPad should be good for non regular readers like. I don't know how much of a reader your wife is hence the suggestion

May be you can try the Sony EBook reader this time, which too uses the eInk technology.
