My boss is using one and IMO its a complete waste of money. Its neither sleek enough for a smart phone nor large enough to replace an ipad or any other netbook

@vcash et al

I am stuck too. Have a budget of 30,000, but not sure which one to pick.
Buy HTC Desire HD now or wait for Xperia Ace or Galaxy S II.

Liked the feel and build of Desire HD, but have a mind block for HTC!

My typical use will be 2-3 hours of talk, round the clock emails and little bit of browsing. Battery life is an important factor for me.

During travel I use GPS extensively. So offline map capability is preferred.

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Ok after using a couple of GPS applications, here are my views,

1) I tried Sygic mobile maps 9 - v7.7 and it worked nice - but I wasn't able to get the voice support going...I did a lot of googling and snooping around to no avail.

2) I upgraded to Sygic mobile maps 10 and got the voice feature going. I used MMI maps v4 with this and the app was all over the place - left, right, u-turns ....... it was absolutely confused --- so I uninstalled it asap....before I get confused !

3) Now I have installed Brut Maps and am caching the tiles - will try out in the evening and see what happens.

4) N Drive - this comes pre-installed with the phone and gives you a one city map only. Works very good, with a decent and tolerable voice directing me. Much better than Mobile Maps 10. There are versions where you can install the whole India map...but I will have to un-install this version.

The question is - Is it worthwhile ?

If you keep your data connection on every time, then Brut maps will suit your requirement best.
Brut maps requires data connection to route and re-route , it also shows alternate routes, just like the google maps and it also gives voice direction.

Hmmm - so what about N Drive 11 ? Worth removing this pre-installed version and then getting the v11 with the all India Map?

Time to remove that block i say, HTC is giving iPhone tough competition in the European market. HTC also manufacture Google's flagship phone - the Nexus series. They are also the largest selling among Android platform.

HTC sure has come a long way since their WinCE days, though they still continue to offer WinMobile in some models - Android has proved to be a boon for them.

Also, do not expect very long battery life out of today's smartphones - think of them as mobile computers more than plain vanilla phones, if it lasts you a day on single charge (with moderate-high usage ofcourse) so that you can plug -in at night, should be sufficient imho.

Yes, it comes with whole India map. I had a chance to test it in places like Madurai, Thanjavur etc on my recent trip. It was quite accurate and showed correct routes.

Depends on you. Upto you if you would like to keep two map applications. you'll have to decide what suits you best. AFAIK, ndrive maps pre-installed on the Optimus 1 is only a trial version.

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

No idea, but from what I read on XDA forums, this version does not include any further updates. So whatever map you load initially(eg in my case India map) will become your final map.

Tanveer - on the pre-installed we can't install maps of other countries ? Just change the map when you land in that country and ready to go !

Not possible no?
