Looks good! But as a V20 user, I don't feel very happy about two changes - the awesome back panel is now glass, and the removal of the second screen. I find the latter very useful.

Most phones, offer zoom(optical/digital), that doesn't help? That said, mid rangers usually struggle in low light/indoors, maybe that's why he isn't getting expected results.

Digital zoom is useless.

Which phones come with optical zoom? Please suggest few which are available with recent Android firmware.

I'm not sure but you should check with Sony, LG and Moto

Indeed. Far better to crop the image on a computer.

How much optical zoom can one fit into a few mm of phone thickness! It does exist, but is it really worth bothering with? Not that they are necessarily mutually exclusive, but image stabilisation would be a better selling point in my book. Should result in those crops (and everything else, unless you have rock-solid hands) being that much sharper.

Image stabilisation is there at the bottom end of the P&S-camera market. Why is yet rare in phone cameras? Especially as so many people make so much use of their always-in-the-pocket cameras. Is it still hard/expensive to miniaturise?

OnePlus 5
Huawei Honor 8.
Asus Zenfone Zoom S (or the Zenfone 3)

If memory serves correct.

@Dr.Suraj; are you sure? It is very tough to separate between optical and digital zooming. In the latter the final image size is reduced in terms of pixels. Making an optical zoom lens, is a tough game, given the space and size constraints.

None of these are optical zoom per se. They have 2 sensors at the back. One sensor has a normal lens and other is 2x zoom fixed lens. The camera app shifts between these lenses to take the zoom pic.

The Oneplus 5 has 1.6x but advertises 2x zoom because the second camera is only 1.6x optically zoomed but the camera post processing does little digital zoom to make it 2x zoom effective.

The phones come with 2 lenses, set at different focal lengths(but same megapixel count). The lenses are set up in such a way, that 2x optical zoom can be achieved.
For instance, my iPhone 7 Plus has a 28mm(F1.8) and a 56mm(F2.8) setup which allows optical zoom.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Better half is looking for a sub-15k budget phone, smaller the better, though I realize it's nearly impossible to get something below 5 inches these days.

Looking at Redmi 4 (Note 4 has better specs but is 5.5").
Lenovo Z2 Plus seems nice and is cheap at ~12k, but has some bad reviews.
Would prefer not to buy a Moto unless left with no other choice.

Advise?

P.S. Blasphemy on an Android thread but does the iPhone SE 32 GB make any sense at ~ 20k? She loves the form factor, though I'm skeptical of buying an old model that may become sluggish with 'forced obsolescence' updates, if not already so.

You should look at the Mi A1 also. Have read good things even though the battery is smaller than the Note 4

Good specs on paper, but seems to be a sale-only model on mi.com, tagged 'Coming Soon' on Flipkart. Worth a look.

It is not as good as SD but good enough. If MTK is a roadblock try the Nokia 5, SD 430, available in Chroma stores and pure Android experience to boot.
By the by I think the Nokia 3 is 5" and Nokia 5 is 5.2" One of your requirements.

Even A1 offers that thru the Android One program but even then they have customized the phone and will collect data from the back end. Available from 12/09
