I don't have any personal experience of the above phones but have quoted it after checking specifications and user reviews.

Anyone using Pixel 5a here?

Am planning to get one from the US. Want to know first-hand review if anyone is using it already here.

Cheers!

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

There have been several posts about Samsung S20 FE 5G. People who have bought one, how has been the experience so far? Any concern with the phone's performance or camera picture quality?

Edit: Since it lacks 3.5mm jack, what earphones do you use, preferably wired ones?

Been sometime since i got mine and the phone is ok. But few niggles, like how the fingerprint sensor screen does not have the night mode effect so it's bright and jarring and for some reason i hate having to update some apps on the google play store and the samsung play store for others.

Like the tap to scan option while taking photos of documents but missing macro mode.

As for the headphone jack, i decided not to sell my LG v40 and i use that as a hi-res DAP

Got mine during the recent sale for 34K and works very well so far. Love the customization options and have a sleek App drawer now. Was using a LG V40 and the battery backup in the S20 FE 5G is leaps and bounds ahead. I got the 25W fast charger and the USB-C to 3.5mm connector from a Samsung retailer and use my Sennheiser earphones with this. I also use my Sony WF-1000-XM3 TWS for meetings and media consumption since TWS are very convenient for these. The camera is good and is a generation old flagship grade one which is still good for our usage. Picture quality wise, it is almost at par with what you get on S20 series and can't complain much at this price.

No issues performance wise and it is a joy to use the AMOLED screen with the 120Hz refresh rate. I easily get more than a day's usage with a single charge. This will get 3 Android OS upgrades and so it should get Android 13 as well and so can be used for 3 years atleast.

I have not turned on the Samsung marketing and don't use the inbuilt Samsung Apps and have restricted them. So use Google Apps mostly and have to update from Play store only.

Moved to this from LG V40 and LG V40 has been my walkman since then. Trying to see if I can get hold of a LG V60 from US so that I can make use of the LG QDAC for many more years.

Ah ok. Have to find sometime to do that now Laziness will be the death of me.

Thanks for the headsup on that.

Well, the screen sort of self healed after few days, but it does go back to the flashing white/green screen mode every now and then. Anyhow, I have done a hard reset and kept it in its stock form. It is completely unreliable now, so I will have to be really careful on how I use it.

I'm getting used to the larger footprint of the phone these days, but I had a dangerous moment of weakness when I held a demo iPhone 13 mini at a store. I hope some android manufacturer create a mini phone in the near future.

Even though I like to take pictures, I am nowhere close to being an enthusiast, so this camera performance is more than sufficient for me. I think the photos from this are comparable to the S10e ones, with the exception of the ultra wide shots, which feels over saturated (the last picture below). Other than that, I am completely happy. The macro mode is something new and I am enjoying it a lot.

The interesting thing is that I have not uninstalled the App. Just signed out of it. Leaves me with 50% battery charge even after 24 hours from being unplugged from the charger!

I am not sure how or why this app causes mdnsd to go haywire. This really is the Achilles heel of Android compared to iOS (Was an iOS user previously). I use the app from time to time so is a bit of a headache to keep signing in and out each time. Its clearly some update but it does puzzle me what this update has done to this particular phone. There are several dozen models of Android phones out there and I am sure most run the same Facebook app.

Re: A52 Battery Charge Cutoff?

How to cutoff the battery recharge at say 98% on Samsung A52?

On my earlier devices it was configurable, BUT couldn't the find the same in A52.

mDNS helps apps to connect to your local devices without any configuration. Usually it's a pretty helpful one, say for example to connect to your chromecast or your local printer. May be in this case FB app is constantly scanning for what's there on your local network. We know FB is pretty aggressive when it comes to data collection and god knows what they might be up to. Have you tried using their lite app? Or if there are finer permission controls on android like you have on iOS, you may try denying FB access to your local network devices and that would help.

Which earlier devices allowed you to set the cutoff point? Was it on a custom Rom?

Indeed. 'Asus M1 Zen Pro' on 'Havoc ROM'.

I could configure the cutoff point for the battery charge.

If you don't care about instant notifications, simply use Facebook from your phone Chrome browser. Once you sign in, it doesn't even ask you again for sign in. It works as good as the app in all other respects, without the overhead of app permissions, privacy issues, battery hogging, etc. You could then uninstall the app. Facebook apps are notorious in terms of the sheer number of permissions they need, and it makes me uncomfortable.

Try Facebook lite from Play store.

I spoke too soon on the matter. mdnsd popped up again as a top battery consumer. It seems pretty random now. I still have Facebook installed. Just not signed in. I will try the lite App. Honestly; one week without FB made me forget the app was even there. In the last one week mdnsd popped up once and now its gone again. Its almost impossible to narrow down what triggers it, which is frustrating. I don't constantly monitor the battery as I have gone used to living with a phone that retains >40% of battery by the end of the day. Its those random moments when you pick up the phone and realize that its tanked to 30% and you're not prepared for that. Android does not make it easy to narrow down the real culprit. If mdnsd is used by multiple apps, it should tell you which app is triggering it.

Anyway, lets see how it goes. Shall update here.
