20mm prime will be from Panasonic and its quite expensive.

17mm is a good choice but is rather slow at f2.8.
14mm is also a bit on the slower side if I recollect correctly.

You are right, both the 14mm and the 17mm are f2.8, so 1 stop slower and yes the 20mm/1.7 is expensive (around $350.00) but still cheaper than the 45/1.8 (around $400.00). My comment was more from usage point of view, that these focal lengths are a lot more useful than 45mm. The 45mm is more of a specialist lens with an effective focal length that is not very useful for general photography.

I would go with one of the three pancakes, choice depending on the budget. One more thing to consider is that the 45mm lens is quite large as compared to the pancakes.

Olympus PEN E-PM1 W/14-42mm Lens + W/40-150mm Lens.

One of the sale offer stands at 27k.
Can't decide without hands on experience as I am yet to see them physically anywhere

I know the official price but expect the street price to be better. I plan to visit SE Asia sometime soon - should I just buy from there? Will I get a better price over there?

No idea about prices elsewhere but Oly is doing well in India, so might get a good price if you talk to them directly. What is your primary area that you intend to cover? Portraits, landscapes?

With an OM-D, you really don't have to worry about night shooting. The IS and the high ISO performance make it a very capable camera.

The 45mm is an amazing amazing lens. The way it renders colors blows my mind. Like you said, it's a nice portrait lens. The 20mm is awesome too, just a different focal length and purpose.

Panasonic 20mm is a bit expensive but awesome lens for its price. The 17mm is the weakest among the three and the 14mm, even though cheap, is a stellar performer as well. I sold mine for around 12k couple of weeks ago.

re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Now that the dollar prices have dropped a bit, what is the current price of OM-D in Bangalore?

re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Just came across this newly released image samples for the Sony NEX 6.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/10...5-5-6-on-NEX-6

I'm trying to understand the quality of the images. From my observation, most of the images posted above does not look sharp. I could see a lot of softening at the corners.

What do you guys feel?

Re: The DSLR Thread

Sony NEX-7 price has been revealed on the Sony India website.

@79990 it is on the higher side isint it, especially the NEX-5N retails for about 25k only. I was hoping about 60-65k.

Any idea if the upcoming NEX-6 will be launched in India as well?

I use 9-18mm as the primary lens on my EPL1. Since you are in Bangalore, you are welcome to check it out.

re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

After a lot of deliberations I have finally settled on getting the Olympus OM-D E-M5. Started with thinking of getting a DSLR actually few months back and started reading about SLRs, lenses, photography terms etc. Moved from a Canon 550D to 650D to Nikon D7000 (which I almost finalized). Then the likes of Samurai got me hooked on to the mirrorless systems! Partly it was also guys like Thom Hagen and Nasim who explained how, despite popular perceptions, the crop sensor DSLRs have very few capable lenses and MFTs are hte better system for hobbyists like me.

So in the end it was between the OM-D and Sony Nex7. I was kind of hoping for a good launch price for the Sony (I like the gimmicks it has plus Sony has finally released the 35mm also for its NEX and thats all I need). But 79.99k is a disappointment. So am not going for the Sony. Shall be buying the OM-D soon. I am happy for this decision actually. I really am in love with the OM-D now! Plan to buy the kit now and later will add the Panasonic Leica Summilux 25mm f/1.4 when I can again save for it.

Now OM-D with the kit 12-50 lens is available for 72k on jjmehta and also same price at Shetala (at least on their website). Does anybody know if there is a better price anywhere?

Congrats! After selling 3 of my 4/3 lenses, I too have the funds for OM-D E-M5.

I am just waiting for some other things (unrelated to photography) to settle down. BTW, is there a price drop considering dollar has dropped against rupee?

re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

I think OMD EM5 and panasonic GH3 fall in the same category. But GH3 has many other advantages like fully articulating LCD, a lot of movie controls etc.

But I might settle for it's cheaper sibling G5, at half the price. Still debating between GH3, G5, and G3 (even cheaper alternative).

To think of it, I started my research with EPL1 at USD ~270

I am graduating in december and probably can wait for another month hoping the prices come down a little bit.

Just had a call from zoomin and they are ready to drop the price to 71k for the kit (Black color). Thats the best price I can find. They will be sending me a 5k coupon tomorrow. infibeam has the same price but I am scared of making a purchase there as there are many horror stories of infibeam and many people here have had good experience with zoomin.

I will call rk photoguide also tomorrow to check their price.

Sony has announced the 35mm prime for their NEX system so you can wait for it if you want an all purpose lens. Otherwise I think they already have a 50mm prime that has good reviews as well (but it will be bit long for any indoor photography but good for portraits)
