Looking at the luke warm response to Punch EV launched at not so attractive introductory price, TATA should provide a realistic price correction for its entire EV range.

This is the third time Tata has done it - dropped/discounted prices soon after release. NexonEV Max was first, TiagoEV second and now NexonEV Facelift! All with substantial amounts.

Not fair at all for the folks who prebook-wait and get the initial lots.

Aside from price correction, the Tiago desperately needs atleast a facelift. It’s too long in the tooth now. It would be great if TATA could launch an all-new Tiago with their latest activ-gen architecture.

100% the Punch is overpriced, no second thoughts. I think majority of the folks were expecting it to priced somewhere close to the Tigor EV ; but 15.50 L ex-showroom for the top-spec is ! Moreover, not to forget , it’s still a 7-8 L car & it clearly shows in the build , fit & finish , etc. ; we’re just paying the additional steep premium for the EV tech.

Re: The "NEW" Car Price Check Thread - Track Price Changes, Discounts, Offers & Deals

God bless competition, good to see substantial price cut across EV segments. I'm hearing such news of price cuts after a very very long time especially after covid. Because, the only news we get to hear was X manufacturer deletes Y features with Z price hike

It does raise a question, how much is the profit margins for EV cars in India, is it really that high that manufactures are reducing prices left right and centre or they are reducing prices just to stay in the game with thin margins.

I think the price changes of EVs will be similar to that of mobile phones. Launched with some price and then keeps reducing until the next generation comes out with a slightly higher price tag. The battery prices keep decreasing and the technology is improving by leaps and bounds every year. Early adopters are paying for using the latest and greatest tech. EV Cars with old tech will see a drop in prices reflecting the improvements. In the case of ICE cars, tech is almost settled, and there are only trivial improvements.

Spot on - EV manufacturers are trying to build a narrative that their vehicles will hold their value over a long time. The steep depreciation of EVs in the use car market, as a phenomenon has not yet been understood or fully factored into the pricing of new EVs. Tata is trying to make hay while the sun shines with their exorbitant pricing.

Who would want to buy a used first generation Tata Nexon EV today, which had such a small battery and range, when one can buy the same car with a lot more range and power as a new car in the market.

The Mercedes India CEO recently wrote an article arguing how one should not compare an EV to a smartphone. The flimsily concealed reason behind his strongly argued article is, this kind of comparison will really hurt the pricing power of the EV makers. However much they try to drum up this version of the story, the reality is that EV prices will behave not very much differently than smartphone prices due the rapid technological change in this industry, driven both by advances in battery technology and software. The depreciation in the used EV market will be dramatic, and this trend will be fully discovered only when sufficient number of used EVs start flooding the market in the next 2-3 years. The real effect of this depreciation will have to be accounted for in the pricing of the new EVs as more of the buyers go through an EMI route, with the EMI being calculated based on residual value of the cars .

As incremental costs per KWHr of battery capacity keep coming down, most new EV offerings will move rapidly to highest practical battery capacity for the car size. To take a smartphone anology, remember how, even 4-5 years ago, pricey iphones used come with 32GB storage and now all the Chinese low to mid range phones costing as low as 10K , offer a minimum of 128 GB.

So mid size and higher SUVs will move to 80KWHr and smaller SUVs and sedans will move to 60KWHr. The MG4 launched in the UK has close to 80 KWHr battery on a large hatchback form.factor. This will cause the used car prices of Nexons and XUV 400s being offered with 30-40 KWHr batteries fall like a sack of potatoes.

Re: The "NEW" Car Price Check Thread - Track Price Changes, Discounts, Offers & Deals

We are on the brink of a major shake-up in the EV pricing. The lines have blurred among the prices of short and long range EVs.

The price difference between a 35 and 40 KWh XUV400 is just 75k. Or about 15k/KWh. This difference at launch was ~2.5 lakh.
The "NEW" Car Price Check Thread - Track Price Changes, Discounts, Offers & Deals-screenshot_20240208091523.png

The same difference applies to Nexon EV MR and LR. The actual Ex Showroom difference is 2 Lakh for 10KWh but that also includes an upgrade to 7.2KW charger that costed an extra 50k earlier. Bringing the battery upgrade cost to the same 15k/KWh.

The problem with this is that the battery pack costs, by some estimates, are actually $126-138/KWh (10.5-11.5k), i.e. much lower than these per KWh cost difference.

As these costs keep dropping, the lower range variants will keep making lesser and lesser sense. Who would want to trade 80-100km of extra range for taking a lakh off the price? Higher range would make the car much more practical for all kinds of applications.

For a car priced in the vicinity of 20lakh, that extra lakh makes a lot more sense than one priced closer to 10lakh.

Just ask the customers, would they want a Nexon EV PRO MAX XXLR for 2.5 lakh more and 1.5x the battery capacity and then the scene would become quite interesting. Go one size bigger (Sierra?) and price this XXLR version at par with a Creta/Seltos and then laugh all the way to the bank.

It is time that lower range versions of current EVs go away and XLR versions are introduced with 10KWh bigger batteries. The only ones where the smaller capacity can survive are the micro-EVs like the MG Comet. This is now the right time for the Nano EV to re-enter and take that space head-on. For everything else, the bigger battery is the way to go if you want to preserve your resale.

Re: The "NEW" Car Price Check Thread - Track Price Changes, Discounts, Offers & Deals

This is a case of too little too late. A 20K price reduction on the Nexon is barely 1% while MG has gone for a 15% drop in prices of the base ZS EV

Great to see such offers / benefits flowing in from the 'top' auto makers.

The wait times too are getting more realistic, and the some dealers even have certain models in-stock.

This was much needed as the auto market has peaked too damn high and this 'correction' was much needed.

I think the sellers (manufactures and dealers combined) have minted enough since the COVID crises. It's about time the buyers take charge!
