re: The Tata Nexon, now launched at Rs. 5.85 lakhs

My hypothesis
Brezza will continue to do 12k-14k

Nexon max to max 4k. Not beyond that.

re: The Tata Nexon, now launched at Rs. 5.85 lakhs

Saw a red nexon with greyed out roof, DRLs and temp mumber on my way to work. It stopped by the traffic light and i got a chance to look at it real close. The fit and finish by Tata is super! The car looks smashing from the front and i couldnt stop looking in my rear view mirror to get a view. The rear for me is a bit over done but that does not take away from the fact that it is unique. The floating screen has been done well too and the interiors seem to be contemporary like all recent Tata launches. It looks bigger and better in flesh is my take. Much better than the pictures.

It was mentioned somewhere before that TATA had a target to sell 3500 units per month. So your hypothesis is very welcome for them.

Any way comparison with MS numbers for any cars under 10 lakhs is futile. The only tough battle being between the Ciaz and City. With S-Cross bringing in the shame but it's numbers are still better than many others.

All said and done Nexon has substance with oodles of style and will find its admirers. Its really a funky car to own.

Videos showing XM variant exterior, interior-front, and interior-rear.

XE - very basic (but has all safety features)
XM - value for money variant
XT - confused variant
XZ+ - Feature rich

XM and XZ+ variants are going to be popular

Test drove the Diesel XZ+ variant and I am thoroughly impressed with the car. This car has changed my perception about Tata Motors. The engine is quite responsive and the different drive modes do make quite a difference. The fit and finish of the interiors is probably from a segment higher. The gear change is also very smooth though the engine noise makes it a bit into the cabin although it's not that bad.

Overall I am really impressed with this car and it will be interesting to see whether it eats into the car sales of a segment higher and competes with Brezza.

The sales executive told me that they have information that Tata is planning to provide an option for a sunroof as an accessory. Notice there is an empty switch in the car.

Sunroof as an "accessory" = something done at the dealership/workshop level? That would be a blunder.

Best to give it as a factory option & make it on the assembly line with the sun-roof. If they forgot that the WRV was offering it and have suddenly realized it this late, giving it as an "accessory" is not the solution.

Sunroof is currently offered for the Hexa as well as a dealership level accessory.

As per rumours, even Ecosport will get it in the upcoming facelift.

Yes I know, and I have an identical reaction to that as well. . Its too much to expect the workshops to do a clean job of it, when people don't feel they are capable to do a basic service and repair job.

1 customer with a 1.5 million rupee HEXA that has a leaking sun-roof, will be enough to do the necessary PR to put a permanent blemish on the product. Tata needs to remember that unfortunately it walks a very thin line about perception. One slip always puts them into an unstoppable fall.

This is what I felt when going through the Nexon Variants.
In my opinion, TATA should provide all the XM & XT features in XM+ and kill both XM & XT.
I do not understand the necessity of XT here.

So, the variants at launch will be XE, XM+ & XZ+.
In future, they can simply launch XM & XZ with AMT.

Makes sense. Although starting with the Zest/Bolt they came up with this variant nomenclature.
  • XE = Entry
  • XM = Mid
  • XT = Top
With the Tiago/Tigor they came up with this new "Z" and then Z+ thing and messed it up a bit in my opinion. Should have stuck with T being top & just shuffled the features properly between the 3.

It was a very simple and logical nomenclature if you ask me. From late 2000s to early 2010s they had all of the below (and some more that I don't remember) in use -
  • Indica/Indigo/CS - LSi, LX, eLX, LS, DLS, DLG, DLX, DLE, GLE, GLS, GLG, GLX [G being gasoline and D being diesel]
  • Vista/Manza - Terra, Aqua, Aura ABS, Aura+, LX, VX ABS, ZX, ELAN (Manza)
  • Sumo/Grande - LX, EX, GX
  • Safari/Storme - LX, EX, GX(Not in Storme), VX
  • Aria - Pure LX, Pure, Pleasure, Pride, VX
I mean...seriously...

I thought they finally learnt the trick with a simple XE/XM/XM+/XT. But no, we seem to be going back to the old times now.

The market is not yet in a place where a mass-production car should have more than 3 variants x 2 engine options. Makes it too confusing - evidently even for Tata's design & marketing teams to properly define these variants and what each trim gets or doesn't.

Sufficient options for folks looking to "Chromify" their ride.

Nexon query:
Did anyone pay attention to as how will an aftermarket Head-Unit fit in the variants without the floating screen(e.g. XM)?
From pictures it seems, if possible, it will fit only a single-din unit. In that case, either it will be fixed deep inside the slot (difficult to operate) OR will be an ugly box projecting out of the slot.

Almost impossible to pull off a neat aftermarket install with this dashboard.

However, if sound quality is important - the stock TATA ones should be very good. The HU should be competent enough to produce better outputs with an upgraded set of speakers too.

If looks are important and a touchscreen HU matters, then you would be disappointed.
