Honda Activa owner pays Rs 8 lakhs for VIP number in Chandigarh

Mr. Kanwaljit Walia's father, who was the President of Taxi Union, Punjab had a love for numbers. It all started when the local RTO introduced a new series for registering tourist vehicles. Being President of the Taxi Union in Punjab, Mr Walia’s father was given allotted two VIP numbers – PNZ 1 and CHZ 1.



The auction which was conducted by RTO officials over the weekend, saw the participation of many rich people from Chandigarh, a city where citizens are known for their fancy cars and fancy number plates. The bidding was for any 4 digit numbers between ‘0001’ to ‘9999’ in the CH01BC series.

Mr Walia’s bid of Rs 8.1 lakh was the highest during the entire auction. Everyone was surprised when they got to know that the VIP number bought by Mr Walia is for his new Honda Activa, and not the new Triumph Thunderbird LT, which he had recently bought for his son.

Instead, for the Triumph he got the number ‘0011’ in the same CH01BC series, for a sum of Rs 2.02 lakhs. The total collection over bidding of VIP numbers stood at 77.71 lakh, far less than what was collected during the bidding of CH01AX series (Rs 98.7 lakhs).

Wow. Just imagining how much will he sell his activa after few years

I too love numbers and the last I paid for a number was Rs.1500 7 years back for my Thunderbird.

Both my cars have awesome numbers with many zeros but the beauty is I bought them preworshipped and at prices lesser or equal to the market price. Thanks to the previous owners who paid the price.

Is anywhere aware of the process being followed at Gurugram RTO. If say one needs a number between 0001-0100 (HR26) is it required for the person to visit CHandigarh RTO?

Can anyone suggest any link or any credible source

From this month, fancy number plates for two-wheelers in Delhi.

Bike enthusiasts in Delhi will be able to get fancy registration for their two-wheelers starting this month. The draft policy for the proposal of auctioning the special registration numbers has been notified and it is likely to be cleared in the next fortnight, government officials privy to the development said.

The Delhi government had last year moved the proposal to make fancy and VIP number plates available for two-wheeler riders. On December 11, 2017, it was put before the public for comments and when no objections were raised, it was sent to the L-G for clearance.

The government officials said that next week the final draft will be sent for approval before the cabinet and a final go-ahead will be sought by Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal.

Once the policy gets the final nod, the minimum price for two-wheelers for the golden number 0001 will be Rs 50,000, while bidding for numbers from 0002 to 0009 will begin from Rs 30,000.

Gauging the demand for numbers like 0786, 1111, 9999, 7777 and 1000, the transport department has set a base price of Rs 20,000 for them. Another category of numbers like 0100, 2222, 8888, 6666 and so on will be sold for Rs 15,000.

The numbers will also be issued to two-wheeler owners on first-come-first-served basis on their online portal at the showrooms itself.

Shouldn't this be written as 0001? I remember reading that even though the first digits may be zero, a vehicle number should always be displayed in four digits, without skipping any digit.

It should be 0001 but it depends on the state Traffic Police if they want to challan a vehicle or not. Here in Chandigarh its a straight challan, however I ve seen cars in Bombay only using the last digit.

Uniform vehicle registration number series for whole of AP from today. The new series starts with AP39A and each series will be covered in around 4 days.

No separate series for each district/RTA as it was till now like AP16, AP31, AP07, AP03, etc.

There will be separate sub series for police(P), RTC buses(Z) and yellow boards(T, U, V, W, X, Y).

This is done to increase the revenue on fancy numbers.

Till now the demand for fancy numbers is present only in specific districts /RTA's and not in others.

Now anyone from anywhere in the state can bid for a number as it is online through out the state.
