re: Third-gen Hyundai i20 spotted testing in Chennai. Edit: Launched at 6.79 lakhs

It's funny how every one around wants a beige and black interiors in the i20 whereas there was a major hue and cry by a lot of people when Hyundai didn't offer an all black interiors in the earlier generations! Moreover, black interiors has become kind of a segment norm! Most of i20's competition now comes with the same along with silver and chrome trims all around.

Let's just say that the Elite i20 had the best mix of black and beige, ever, beige at visual points and black at touch points. Overuse of black leads to a pretty stifling feeling, specially in cities like Bangalore where the sun peeps out once in a century like depressing Europe.

Not saying that overly light-toned interiors like Nios i10 works too, its a tricky balance that companies must do.

This is probably how the Magna model of i20 2020 would look. For a base variant it doesn't look stripped.

It might not look bare bones to people who have the Elite i20 as benchmark but for someone like me who had the 1st generation i20 Magna it looks bare bones to me. My car had a similar music system but also had automatic climate control.

So, for me apart from the addition of the mandatory safety features, addition of steering wheel controls and different exterior and interior shape there is nothing new. So, for someone like me the least I would expect would be a touchscreen, alloy wheels, projector headlamps and automatic climate control based on the price hikes and two generations change.

I got my car for about 5.5 Lacs and this one is going to cost nothing below 7.5 Lacs I think.

re: Third-gen Hyundai i20 spotted testing in Chennai. Edit: Launched at 6.79 lakhs

Had a quick look at the new i20 Asta (O) turbo DCT at a dealer's yard today.

Here a my few observations.

No photos were allowed.

1. Car definitely looks good in person. The silhouette is kinda similar to the Altroz. But the i20 somehow looks a bit longer then the Altroz to me. That being said, Altroz is still THE best looking hatch. Period.

2. The rear of the i20 is kinda quirky, I for one didn't like it much. To make matters worse, there is this chrome element running across the taillights. I wonder what was so difficult for Hyundai to just stick to the simple reflector set-up?

3. Ingress / egress is easy, and is similar to the outgoing model. However, I drive the Creta and Swift (2nd-gen) and hence found the sitting lower in the i20 for obvious reasons. Not a deal breaker for me though.

4. Being the full loaded variant, it had majority of the bells and whistles viz. Full leather upholstery including the seats (YES. Finally!), unlike the part-leather in Venue, 10.25 inch AVN with BOSE system, 6 Airbags, ESP and the works.

5. Another nice touch is the Blue 'Ambient lighting' in the footwell, door handles as well as the door pockets. Nice touch IMHO.

6. Steering is good to hold and has a perfect size. I found it a tad stiffer then the Venue while twirling at standstill. Venue has a much lighter steering.

7. Front seats are adequately sized and have a good lumbar support. i20 seats have always been good and I am glad that they continue to be.

8. Digital instrument cluster is a direct lift from the Verna and has a good visibility. It is good to look at when standstill atleast. How it is while driving is what is left to be seen.

TPMS is confirmed which I believe is the Highline as it shows the exact pressure in individual tires.

9. Rear legroom is good too. I am 6 feet tall with a laid back driving position, and with the seat set to my style, I could sit behind with reasonable amount of comfort. However, 3 abreast is not recommended. Strictly 4 seater.

10. I felt the engine to be quite silent compared to the Venue. I was expecting some improvement anyway since it's already been over a year it is launched.

11. Puddle lamps are a good addition too.

12. The headlights though projectors are HID (White) set-up coupled with cornering lamps and sitting below are the projector fogs (Warm) as well.

13. What is left to be seen are the power figures for the 1L turbo, which is speculated to be de-tuned to a 100 horses. I feel it shouldn't hamper the performance, as this car will definitely be lighter than the Venue. Not to forget the aerodynamics of the hatchbacks are always better than that of the SUV's.

14. BOSE system is purely for the sake of marketing as I didn't find it any better then their Arkamys sound system. It sounds good nonetheless.

15. I feel the boot space should be 330L ballpark as I didn't find it accommodating. Infact, when compared to the outgoing i20, I found it a tad smaller in size.

16. SA claims a pricing of approx 9.5L for the top of the line Asta (O) Turbo DCT. Official
prices to be revealed on the launch day itself.

17. Pre-booking commenced already with amount ranging from 10k to 25k depending upon the dealer. Fully refundable.

Overall, the car is well kitted, and we pretty much know how the 1L turbo DCT drives, hence no surprises left anymore.

What is left to be seen is only the pricing. Hope Hyundai prices the car well, at least the so called introductory prices.

This car is sure to sell like hot cakes, of course tailing the Baleno. I don't have any doubts about that.

re: Third-gen Hyundai i20 spotted testing in Chennai. Edit: Launched at 6.79 lakhs

It brings a joy to my face to see that all these bells and whistles coming to this segment. Five years ago nobody would have imagined getting Bose speakers,10.25 touchscreen , ventilated seats , front parking sensors in cars of this price bracket. Kudos to Hyundai for taking the game to the other players and giving us plethora of features and options. Let's just hope they price it right. They have a winner on their hands if its top model undercuts Venue/Seltos reasonably.

So, no ventilated seats on the top variant? I think this is a big miss. Hyundai/Kia wowed me when they started offering ventilated seats in cars priced under ₹15 lakhs, they have this big advantage over the competition. I would've much preferred ventilated seats over the sunroof, considering we all live in India.

So the Magna loses the chrome strip on the rear, which is a good thing imo, looks much more settled this way. I find it particularly annoying that carmakers have lately attributed vast chrome additions as a feature which should be provided as you go up the variants.
Can't wait for the launch now, my family and I are looking to phase out our 2016 i20, and purchase either the Sonet or the 2020 i20.

Nope, no ventilated seats. But IMO one cannot expect those in a car that is priced under 10L ex-showroom.

Kia offering that feature in the sub 4m Sonet itself was a big surprise. But expecting the same in a premium hatch under 10L is kinda unfair IMHO. You see the price difference between the top-spec i20 & Sonet will be close to 4 L, which is a huge amount. But hey, apart from the Ventilated seats, the top-spec i20 isn’t far behind in terms of what the Sonet is offering. Heck, it is even better kitted than it’s sibling, the Venue.

One has to also look at what the competition is offering; it won’t be all that right to compare the i20 to the Sonet or even the Venue even though there will be some price overlap. They both cater to differ segments. From that perspective, the i20 is definitely way more kitted than the other leading premium hatches viz. Baleno & Altroz.

Tell me which premium hatch offers these features currently,
- 6 Airbags
- ESP, VSM, TC
- 10.25” touchscreen
- Bose audio, even though ain’t that impressive but definitely worth a mention.
- Rear AC vents
- That Sweet, sweet 1L turbo + DCT
- Crowd favourite sunroof. There are many folks who would prefer a Sunroof over the ventilated seats. It’s a big big draw for any car buyer now. Classic case is the new Creta.

Having said all of this, I won’t be surprised if the ventilated seats are offered in facelift 3 years down the line.

Does it come with subwoofer in the boot?

Also, did it have paddle shifters?

Yes, it has a 7 speaker set-up; 4 speakers, 2 tweeters & a sub-woofer in the boot.

No paddle shifters though.
