SGP ignition coil for SS80,SB308,gypsy etc is essentially a NIPPON DENSO coil(black). It is still available in Malaysia.

Yesterday I spotted this brown Maruti 800 ( SS80) parked in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. The bodylines are straight with no hint of corrosion. Even the wheel caps are original.

Can't comment on other parts, but the wheel rims have been shoddily painted. And it appears, they have been painted without removing the center cap or the wheel nuts. Such hush-hush jobs gives a good idea of how much care and devotion a car owner puts towards his car.

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

I had this gem of a pic of Harpal Singh, and his SS80, the very first one to be handed over.

IIRC- Indira Gandhi handed him over the keys of this one.

'Neways, Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you- DIA 6479.

Ach- I notice that your car is DIA 6897. Only 418 cars apart, registration wise, from the very first SS80 to be delivered! Lucky you!

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

Guys, any good denter/painter in Mumbai? A friend has acquired a 1984 SS80 and wants to restore it. Car is in ship-shape mechanically, only denting-painting is required. It has orignal paint but has faded quite a bit. Please PM or call/whatsapp me on 9833544773. Thanks

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

This is my Father-in-laws 1984 SS80.
The car has done just around 66000Kms in all these time and on original trim and paint.

This car was first bought by a Brigadier and then was acquired by my Father in law.
The car is in top condition and is a hoot to drive. Only issue is that the high beam is not working and I am trying very hard to get the original headlamps.

Unfortunately he is now planning to sell it off as the car is not being used as much as we would like and due to parking constraint. I am persuading him to not sell it but at the same time I am unable to keep this as I have already have two cars and parking is a big issue.

Some pics of the car.

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

Hi guys, I'm planning to restore our Ss80 soon. It mostly needs cosmetic repairs and some new parts. As of now I've sourced the wheel cylinder, master, Ariel, hatch glass pump, wipers, headlights, indicators.

I request all the owners who've restored theirs to post in their restoration tips please. Thanks in advance..

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

They said :

Absence makes the heart make grow fonder.

The M800 was a true legend. Truly. Many of us are on the lookout for an excellent specimen. To preserve those memories. Me included.

My experience with the M800 was worth remembering. The first crash. The first time you redlined the car. The hum of the three cylinder Suzuki F8B was characteristic.

Characteristic indeed. It was the first car that I'd tinkered with.

The ending was a bit tragic- 1003 was stolen. Sad.

Wherever you are, MH 08 C 1003, you shall be missed. I always look at the parking spot you once stood. The concrete surface is still greasy. Your gasket's leaked. I remember how the (Made-In-Japan) Mikuni Carbs leaked. I still remember that lingering smell of petrol every time I popped open the hood......

The Lucas Ignition Coil...with the shiny green sticker on it.....

I still remember that greasy and sooty engine bay......

Your radiators leaked out coolant by the litres. Your gearbox used to leak out gear oil. Or it was the engine. Perhaps. Perhaps the sump gasket was loose.

Shame. I never found out the source of that leak........

You just went away one fine summer afternoon. It was a Monday in 2010. I still remember that white boot vanishing away in the sunlight. Shining a wee bit. I had polished you just the previous Sunday afternoon. I still remember that washing session.

I never knew that it would turn out to be the last. Ever
.

Your exhausts were spewing out white smoke- Guess someone was driving you hard. Hard. Harder than ever.

You went away. Shining. Glinting. Leaving me to deal with what is truly a waste of a police force. Waste.

Gosh- I'm almost in tears.

A few quotes :

Quote:
India’s first Maruti 800 car, which gave its owner Harpal Singh and his wife Gulshanbeer Kaur a celebrity status, is dying a slow death outside the couple’s Green Park residence in Delhi with nobody to take care of it after they passed away.

The car, whose keys were handed to Harpal Singh by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on December 14, 1983, has not been used for one-and-a-half-years.
It now has the hallmarks of an abandoned car: rusting with weed growing around it.

Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX-maruti1.jpg

Quote:
passed away in 2010 and two years later, his wife Gulshanbeer Kaur too died. The couple’s green park residence remain locked since then. Their two daughters live in separate areas of South Delhi with their husbands.

“Even after mom’s death, the family members used to go to the house to start the car and take a short drive in the inner colony lane, but for the past one-and-half years it has not been used at all,” said Harpal Singh’s elder son-in-law Tejinder Ahluwalia, 65.
Quote:
Maruti took the car in 2008 to celebrate 25 years of the brand.

"After that it has shown no interest towards its first baby", said Ahluwalia. “We even wrote letters around a couple of years back to the company to do something to save this piece of history but they have not shown any interest.”

The spokesperson of Maruti Suzuki said, “It is indeed very special, as it was our first customer car. Mr. Harpal Singh had maintained it with great care. If the family now wants us to buy it back, we are open to discuss with them.”
Heck- I'd be willing to buy it. But- Parking space is something that I unfortunately don't have.

Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX-maruti4.jpg

Sad, no?

I find this bit ridiculous. NGT has been talking about implementing some utterly useless laws in Delhi. I wonder how they shall be implemented.

Heck - Our perfectly tuned FIAT 1100D (Nearly 44 years old- I guess) will pollute a lot less than.....

'Neways :

Quote:
“It is sad to see the car in this state now as it was very close to my father, secondly it has a history behind it, since we cannot drive this car anymore due to environmental norms in force, the Maruti must come forward and keep it in a museum or any other place as a showpiece,” said Harpal Singh’s younger daughter Sunita Walia, 50.

Cannot drive due to environmental norms.
Ridiculous. Curse the NGT.
