Every vehicle has its plus and minus points. The Civic was ahead of the earlier Corolla. Now that they have launched Altis, it is certainly a better product and better value for the buck – it is no inferiority on Honda’s part – being a later product it is only natural and appropriate that Toyota brings out one so.

Corolla Civic debate is not anything new and has been there for generations..both has its takers..ultimately we customers have benefitted immensely due to the rivalry. I have done 20k on my corolla in the past 20 odd months and I must say the car has lived up to the expectation.

the new gen civic's are just awesome. smart exteriors and futuristic interiors. what goes under the hood is nothing short of exceptional. my vote goes to the Civic.

I agree to this particular point. The mid range of earlier corolla's 1.8 engine was better then the civic's. I wonder if many people know about this. It was the high GC and a not so connected steering that refused to join the party. I have driven only the civic and frankly i was not too impressed. It found it a bit too low and with not so gr8 visibility. The acceleration was nice, but not exactly frantic and even the handling was no gr8 shakes (at medium speeds, at low speeds it was fantastic!)

Both are great cars - the differences are actually minimal. The choice is purely a personal preference at that point of time.

I had a difficult time in deciding between the two. What tipped my choice in favor of Altis was its "dead feel EPS" (as many people disdainfully describe it). I already have OHC CVT and I likes its dead EPS too for the bad Delhi traffic.

I believe one should choose the car based on how & where one would be driving it 95 % of the time and not on how one wants to drive it 5 % of the time. A car cannot fill 100 % of the requirements - for that probably you would need 3 cars !!!

A comment on styling & looks - I personally found Civic a little too stylish for me (I find new Accord outlandishly stylish). It's like choosing between two pretty girls - one a little too style-oriented and the other one a simple but elegant beauty ! Having said that - I would love the have both ;-)

AFAIK, 2400 civic cars were sold in first month after the launch and they had bookings for 4000.

That is exactly the point. How many Civic owners are ready to buy another Civic now? I have seen almost all corolla owners are ready to buy onother Corolla.

If there's a new version that gets released then I'm sure a lot of Civic buyers will buy it just as a lot of Corolla buyers are ready to buy the Altis.

Many have concurred in the past posts that both cars have their pros and cons. The Corolla comes first and the Civic second in most markets across the world. In India its almost neck and neck between the two, but frankly I've seen way too many Civics in Bangalore and Chennai then Corollas at any point of time.

I would have bought the Altis if the Civic wasn't around or too old and I bought the Civic because the Corolla was getting a bit long in its tooth to warrant a straight forward comparison.

Well, most of what he said about Honda in India is true. Honda was the first car manufacturer to launch a contemporary (as in not outdated in rest of APAC etc) car in India - OHC upped the game on anything that was available then. The 1.3l engine had superb FE and reasonably good acceleration, 1.5l was super all round, and then came the VTEC ! Before the OHC launch, we had a brain-dead Escort from Ford (probably needed a bullock to help it accelerate), and an old Astra severely overpriced from Opel. In response, Mitsubishi launched Lancer, Maruti had to bring in Baleno and so on. I don't own a Honda, but I know credit is due them.

Let's look at Toyota in comparison. Some years after OHC launch, they bring a mid-eighties, awkward looking, high body-roll MUV to India which they didn't sell almost anywhere else, and launched their great innings in India. Now Qualis was a competent product in its day, but it was severely outdated at launch! That other MUV manufacturers provided us worse products, caused the Qualis to be a hit in India (my friend bought it almost at launch, and it was a decent riding and fuel-efficient vehicle). Then, Toyota took forever to launch the Corolla and the Innova (the latter being the contemporary vehicle the likes of which they should have launched in the first place).

So, there is no comparison, Honda mostly launched contemporary products in India (and manytimes within a few months of global launch)

- Honda Accord (3 generations)
- G3HC
- CRV

Show me another manufacturer who did similar !

PS - And I did vote for Corolla 1.8E over Civic 1.8E in the poll. Because its a smashing value compared to Civic. The gap narrows for 1.8G and 1.8V.

Altis looks prehistoric when compared to Civic in my opinion. My vote for the Civic any day! Altis's front is ugly actually. Dont know much about the difference in performances. Although going by their reputation, I expect Altis to be more "conservative" than Civic.

During my visits to Toyota show room i have noticed many first time buyers along with repeat customers. It is selling hot cakes at the moment.

With so many features at the base model price point, the VFM factor is working in favour of Toyota India.

In short between this competitors the customer is not getting the opportunity to feel like a king.

Just received a SMS from Toyota. For existing Toyota owners, they are offering SMILE package with 60000 km free maintenance for Altis. Since I am not interested in buying a new car, have not checked. I think SMILE package costs Rs. 2400. When I bought it, it was for 2200 and 1 yr or 20K. Considering each service after 1K (10,20,30,40,50,60) is around 2-3K, that would make a total cash benefit of around 12-15K. Do not know if cost of Smile package has also increased.
