Re: kpzen to kpgetz : Two Getz CRDi's join the family !! - 1,11,111 kms

Sails past another milestone.
Car hasn't been logging kms as before.

Only couple of highway trips in last 5 months.

FIRST BREAKDOWN !

Couple of weeks back, Dad was waiting at a traffic signal, as it became green he tried to press the clutch but the pedal won't move, it was jammed.
Same feeling as the brake pedal, you can't press it beyond a certain level.
And, Hyundai CRDi's don't start without pressing the clutch. So, you are completely stranded.

Called up the mechanic, he somehow forcefully got the clutch pedal working.
CRDi comes to life but the clutch feels sticky with no spring action, he carefully drives it to the Hyundai service center.
As per him, the clutch was the culprit & it needs replacement.
But it was replaced at 100k kms, so I wasn't ready to buy his words.

After inspection, it was reported that clutch master cylinder needs to be replaced and clutch is fine.

Total cost of repair - Rs 3200

Re: kpzen to kpgetz : Two Getz CRDi's join the family !! - 1,11,111 kms

Hi Prajesh,

Greeting. Tried to send you a message but it said the mailbox was full, hence posting this here.

I have been following your thread on the Getz CRDI for quite sometime, and am a fan of the Car post your review.

I have been on a lookout for a used Getz CRDI and through a friend got a reference to a car ,specs as below.

Year-2008
KMS - 64000
Major Work - N/A
Single Owner
No Accidents
Alloys + ICE

the asking rate is approx 3.5

Can you please share from your experience what items should I be looking at , will be seeing the car on Saturday.

Can you please advice on any check-list which would list things that would be replaced in the 60k service , this would help me understand how much will be the immediate damage if I go in for this purchase.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Regards,
Jimit.

Sorry for hijacking this reply, but having owned the same engine in a different car (2008 Verna CRDI) here are my 2 cents:

1. For sure take the car to a HASS. Firstly if the car has been serviced only with HASS, their service record will tell if the mileage is genuine. Secondly check the condition of the engine and turbo. On a Hyundai the cycle parts/cosmetic parts are not very expensive. But the injectors and turbo in the 2008 engine are prohibitively so. About 28K and 70K respectively! So if the engine and turbo are less than perfect, stay away from the car.

2. Check the front ball joints, AC compressor condition and timing chain joints as well.

Hi, An update after a long time.

Getzie just got back from Kinnaur Spiti trip.
Flawless performance on one of the most treacherous routes in India which includes multiple water crossing, stony roads, landslides etc.
There was power loss issue at 3500m above sea level due to the scarcity of oxygen at that height.
Once the filter was cleaned and petes box was removed, engine breathing got better and it conquered the world's highest motorable village Komik @ 4200 m + above sea level.

Odo is now at 142,000 kms.

Here's a pic from the Kinnaur Spiti trip.

Amazing. Those 2 lines are just what I need to silence all the naysayers, who suggest that my 95K run Verna CRDI is getting old and I need to change it . Jokes apart, it is an amazing engine if maintained well.

Re: kpzen to kpgetz : Two Getz CRDi's join the family !! - 1,11,111 kms

Whats is the current mileage you are getting after crossing such huge milestone? Those places looks heaven. Also any reason to remove Petes box. I suppose the box is over fuelling the engine due to lack of air.

Mileage has always been around 15kmpl.

There was loss of power at high altitude ~ 3000m + due to lack of oxygen. Removed it and cleaned the filter so that engine can breathe better.

Re: kpzen to kpgetz : Two Getz CRDi's join the family !! - 1,11,111 kms

BLACK SMOKE issue & its solution.

The engine had started emitting black smoke two month back. It was not the usual black smoke noticed when the turbo kicks in with a heavy right foot.
Smoke was continuous and present while cruising.
And, with unknown fuel quality and stressful conditions for the engine during the Kaza trip, the black smoke issue became even worse.

After return, I had to sort it out asap.
Following steps were followed
1. Fuel filter was replaced and car was run with good fuel for two tank full.
2. Next, Air filter was cleaned.
3. Removed the petes tuning box and tried stock condition.
4. Ripped it for a few 100 kms to release any black soot

All in vain, CRDi was still emitting black smoke.
At 142k kms mark, it was a matter of concern.

Next up was turbo and its mating parts.
Boost was not a primary concern as there was no noticeable loss in power.
CRDi was still pulling like a locomotive. The sheer torque pulled us through the 35 odd water crossings on Kaza - Manali route.
However, there was a noticeable lag before the turbo kicks in.

Stage 2 check started with intercooler cleaning. (Partly DIY)
While at it, observed some oil traces on the pipe to intercooler which gave me hints on cleaning the EGR.
The clamp on Pipe from turbo to intercooler was also found to be loose. Clamp was replaced immediately.
Next up was EGR cleaning. Removing it was a pain with no space to work in the engine bay.
Disconnecting all connectors and pipes factory sealed 6 years ago was a tough job.

After an hour, EGR was finally out. There was substantial amount black soot deposit inside.
With care, it was all cleaned and flushed.
Even the connecting pipes with some black deposit were cleaned.

Post cleaning, all parts were fixed back.
And, we went on a test drive.
VOILA !! No smoke visible in the mirror.
The feeling and Satisfaction is priceless when your DIY is a success.

Its done 500 kms after EGR cleaning and so far there's no smoke and the lag has reduced considerably.
Will run about 1000 kms and put the petes tuning box back.

Now it was time to pamper,
Brake shoe was due for a change and since it was running on original brake discs @ 142k Kms and I decide to change both together.
The front Wheel bearings was also changed.

Total damage to pocket
1. Front wheel bearing (2nos) Rs 1346
2. Brake pad - Rs 3025 (2 sets)
3. Brake Discs - Rs 5800 (2nos)

Re: kpzen to kpgetz : Two Getz CRDi's join the family !! - 1,11,111 kms

The korean missile has crossed another mark.

Few squeaks and suspension thud noise has been observed in last few weeks.
Not sure, if its the Kaza trip impact or the age factor. Need to get it checked.
