Most of the 0w20 engine oils available at Nexa Service outlets are semi-synthetic. If you ask for fully synthetic they will show you Mobil 0w40, which isn't the right grade for Baleno Petrol.

Idemitsu & Mobil does have fully synthetic engine oil in India but they are priced around Rs 1000-1200/liter. If you are really keen on getting fully synthetic 0w20 oils, here are the links to them.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

My S-Cross 1.3 is nearing the 50k mark and the end of year #4 which implies the extended warranty expires and I can freely choose the engine oil without worrying. From what I've understood, I'm supposed to put 5w-30 engine oil conforming to A5/B5.

I would be switching from Mineral to Synthetic now. My running is mostly around city with moderate traffic combined with occasional highway runs. Since there aren't many 5w30 A5/B5 options available, I have shortlisted these two. Seeking advice and open to more recommendations

CASTROL MAGNATEC START STOP 5W-30 A5/B5

IDEMITSU 5W/30 A5/B5

AMSOIL XL 5W-30 A5/B5

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

There are many, many 5w30 A5/B5 in the market to suit your purse. Idemitsu is a very nice oil indeed, and Castrol Magnatec as well, for the price point. Others in a similar price range - Valvoline All Climate Advanced, Mobil Super 3000 X1.

Amsoil is super premium, and expensive - but streets ahead of the other two oils.

If you're on a budget take the Idemitsu one. I've tried it and its not bad at all.

Budget isn't a constraint, just that I had been narrowing down my choices based on oil spec. I had earlier chosen the Motul 8100 X-Cess but that is 5w40 with A3/B4 and the last thing I want to do is use a heavier oil than required.

If I narrow it down to Castrol & Idemitsu, would there be any notable difference in performance (pick up, FE, NVH, etc) between the two?

Also, I'd love to go for AMSOIL but wouldn't that be an overkill for my use case?

1000 km completed, with a round trip to Trichy thrown in. I find a marginal improvement in pick-up, smoothness and refinement. Engine was already very smooth while running on HX7. There is no difference in FE. Slightly lower speeds are now possible in higher gears, picking up speed in the same gear is now easier. Slightly higher top speed should also be possible, but I did not cross my usual top speeds (around 95).That is the sweet spot for Alto.

Will I stick to Ultra next year? May be, may be not. The GP Road dealer gave it for roughly half the price as compared to Shell station. Perhaps he will give Hx 7 also at half the price!

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Hi does your car need a 5w40 or a 5w30?

If 5w30 then idemirsu and Valvoline All Climate Advanced work great, I haven’t tried the Castrol but it has good specs and a good reputation among knowledgeable users.

As for Amsoil I’ve a Scorpio that’s done 23k km in the 8 months since I got it last November (it was then at 20k km and a 2015 model, now 43k odd).

The last 11k km have been on Amsoil 5w40 CK4 and the car still feels smooth with a perceptible decrease in NVH. Mind you this is a Scorpio so that’s quite an achievement. I changed the oil filter at the 10k mark and topped up 250 ml of oil.

The oil in the sump appeared to be in quite good condition for having run 10k, but changing just the filter and topping up is recommended for longer drain intervals using an oil that supports them.

Specifically for any good oil but doing less than 10k km in a year anything at all that fits the spec will do, any improvement you see will be marginal.

If you’re running up higher mileage then feel free to increase the quality of your oil.

@gansan- hx8 is perfect for your use case. You will get good discounts for that as well in gp road shops. However pouring shell helix ultra won’t hurt and if your car feels better on it, go ahead. The difference will only become more perceptible after a few years of use unless you have several highway trips coming up on your Alto.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Got my car serviced yesterday, my regular favourite Mobil 1 0W40 was out of stock at the shop. The shopkeeper offered a different oil, and promised me good results.

The oil in question is Mobil Super 3000 Formula l . Quite a big name tbh. The can said it's synthetic but it only conformed upto API SL. This is where I became doubtful of the oil. I have always used API SN rated oil. My car is a 2012 Dzire petrol.

Can I stretch this oil to 10,000 kms? Or should I get the car serviced only after 6000-7000 kms?

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Roughly ACEA A3/B4 is what you need, never mind API SM etc for a 2012 car. That is an older version of the Mobil Super 3000, the newer ones are SN/SN+

But Mobil 1 is the premium brand in Mobil while Super 3000 X1 is a group 3 synthetic (cheapest that can be called full synthetic let us say).

The car will run fine for 6-7k km with this Mobil Super 3000.

Gansan, you really should try Amsoil Signature 5W-30 However, I am not sure 5W-30 is recommended for your car. Check the manual and if you can just give it a try even if only once. If you liked SHU, you'll like Amsoil Signature even more.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

^^ It is allowed as per the owner's manual, but only if I lived in Ooty or Shimla! For Chennai climate the recommended oil is 20W40/10W40/5W40, or even 20W50.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Can members from Delhi/NCR please point me to a reliable dealer for Mobil1 Synthetic Oil in Gurgaon? If not in Gurgaon, can pick it up from Delhi as well.

The problem with Mobil1's own dealer locator is that there are just so many links and the google results often dont match up.

Thank you in advance.
