Re: Bad Drivers - How do you spot 'em

Was following a Ecosport on the Velachery Tambaram Main Road. First thought he was driving under influence looking at the way how concentrated he was. Reached the Kama Koti Nagar signal and found the reason for his lack of concentration.
He was watching video on the move.

I was a bit scared to overtake him and getting rear ended as an item song followed

Not sure if it would have any effect, but maybe you could report it on the Chennai Traffic Police handle on Twitter. If some action is taken, it would be great.

Btw, i stay in Kamakoti Nagar and the traffic at this signal is getting unmanageable day by day, especially at peak hours.

Cheers,
Ram

Similar experience yesterday morning with a lady driving an i20 in Bangalore peak morning rush hour traffic from Seshadripuram college to Cubbon Road. She was on a video call/meeting throughout with phone in left hand and driving solely with right. Head tilted towards the phone mainly and looking up when folks around her honked. I tried to stay out of her way as much as possible and avoided getting in front so I don't get rear-ended. It was amazing she managed to drive so far without touching anything. She's ready for driverless cars even if the rest of the traffic wasn't.

Thought of clicking a pic but decided against it for obvious privacy reasons and also not wanting to do the same "bad driver" thing myself

Driving is stressful enough as it is without having to take care of other's safety on the road as well. Seriously makes one wonder where we are headed with people like this on the road who should know better.

Re: Bad Drivers - How do you spot 'em

I spotted a Toyota Fortuner on Kolhapur-Satara Highway with Super Bright white LEDs mounted on rear bumper.

They were so bright i was blinded by them completely and others were suffering too and keeping a good distance.

Maruti 800 driver

1. Didn't keep left

2. Can't navigate an incline

I didn't wait for him to restart and come up as I didn't wanna hold traffic at my back and didn't really trust the m800 driver to make the turn without making contact with my car.

Shouldn't happen, but which of us doesn't stall occasionally? I always say I should get a prize for it because it's actually difficult to stall a diesel!

So he stalled. It happens. but allowing the car to drop back is unforgivable.

It was nice of you to be waiting for him in the first place, but no need to wait further while he sorts himself out.

Have recently seen many stupid videos of people installing LED flash lights at the rear, most of them i saw were flashed on the vehicle tailing them if it happened to flash a high-beam..

Needless to say most of these videos were from HR,PB,NCR area, this chap also looks to be one those sick guys.

No lights, no warnings, no common sense.

A sweeping truck plying on the fast lane, which has a speed limit of 120 kmph at a very slow speed.

This is incredibly dangerous and just one slightly distracted driver away from catastrophe.

The driver of that truck and the people who put him in that situation are both equally to blame.

Absolutely agree. The RTO officer who gave him a licence should also be penalized.

Of bad U-Turns and Going Arounders:

Of late driving in the city here, I have noticed two things that are becoming very common.

1: Taking U-Turns at busy junctions when the signal is red! For some reason these fellows assume that red is for all those who are going straight only and does not apply to his highness wanting to take a u-turn.

Vehicles coming from the opposite side who have a green signal be damned.

Worst part is these U-Turners give you the glare, honk, flash lights and what not while taking their illegal senseless turns!

2: Two lane side road merging onto a four lane main road. One lane for people to go left, and one for people wanting to go right.

Simple right?

But not for many it would seem.

Waiting with blinkers on to take a right, fellow behind comes around on to my left and proceeds to poke his front at an angle and goes right cutting across me.

Whatever happened to staying behind someone taking a turn?

Ah. That's a very common sight here. The number of lanes wanting to take the U turn depends on how busy the junction is. For example, at Edappally junction, majority of vehicles are waiting to go right (towards Lulu Mall, Aluva). So the 3 lane junction is converted to 5 lanes by commuters where 4 lanes are taking right. Some poor chap going straight will be caught in the middle. This happens at almost all junctions.

You guys atleast have better planned roads. Imagine our plight .

The sweeper truck might have used better hazard warning using a lane closure alert until the cleaning is done.

However, I feel at 80-90 kmph speed, you are following too close to the vehicles ahead. I see only a 2 second following distance, which can be estimated using the stationary light poles.

Also, none of the vehicles ahead are maintaining Crash Avoidance Space on the sides by driving parallel to each other, which is a big mistake.

Here in Delhi, buses even take right turns from the extreme left. I was in the middle lane, waiting to go straight, and this bus forced me to turn right to avoid a collision. Hoping for saner traffic in Trivandrum, I am shifting there within a month.

Yup, one of the rare capital cities with beautiful roads. Bhopal is another example.
