Road Condition, rains and landslides Mumbai-Pune EWay to Mahableshwar

A bunch of my friends and I are planning to drive to Mahableshwar tomorrow morning. All parents are concerned about the weather and landslides along the ghat streches. Any idea whether landslides are very common? What precautions can be taken if any? The plan is to take this route early on Sat morning ie leave Mumbai, Bandra by 5.00am.

We will return using the same route on Sunday afternoon. Any information will help. Thanks in advance.

Lots and lots of potholes, some stretches before the expressway, and after are just horrible. There are diversions where your car is just driving over stones.

Do take an SUV if possible. Also take Palm Beach road on the way to avoid some of the mess.

Just drove in really heavy rain last weekend on the expressway, was completely manageable. No landslides, but I would recommend staying away from the hilly side of the road to avoid falling rocks, if any.

Agree with Akshay!
Khandala stretch on the expressway is to watch out for. Its been years since I have heard of any major landslide in this stretch. But its better to be cautious. They generally block one or sometimes even two hill-side lanes so as to distance the traffic from any rocks/stones. Besides this small stretch on the expressway, the rest of the expressway has no issues with landslides etc.

The other ghat section you would get is the Pasarani ghat before Panchgani. Again not really a landslide-prone area.

Just be careful, that's all. No special precautions needed.

Have fun!

Re: Road Condition, rains and landslides Mumbai-Pune EWay to Mahableshwar

Post the expressway, on the Bangalore highway, there are multiple diversions, the usual no-road type.
The road would gradually improve as you move towards the fringe areas of Pune, but there is the occasional car swallowing crater at most places, you may need to keep a constant eye out for them as they usually don't move out of the way.
The new katraj tunnel is now a single lane entry, be careful while approaching, best not to overtake.
Once you have crossed the tunnel, roads are fairly decent by Maharashtra standards right till the Mahabaleshwar turn.

Cheers!

Krishna river seems to be flooded near Wai. Please check the news. As per Facebook Satara page, they had posted a pic of overflowing river yesterday night.

EDIT: Here's the pic

Road Condition between Palagat and Cannanore(Kannur)

Hi Folks,

Need to make a quick dash between Chennai and Kannur. Heard that there have been very heavy rains in Kerala and the roads are very bad.

Can someone please help with the time it would take for one to drive from Palagat to Kannur, I know that the roads till coimbatore are good.

Also, if its really bad I would prefer to fly down to Calicut and take a cab, but I heard that it takes close to 3-4hrs to drive the 100 odd kms from Calicut airport to Kannur city, is that so. A few other posts does not give me this impresion though. Any help would be great.

Cheers

Airport to Kannur would take you around 3-3.5hours.Palakkad to Kozhikode the main highway via Manarkad is in a bad state. The alternate route via Mundoor-Cherplasserry-Perinthalmanna is in ok shape.Overall budget for a minimum 5hr or slightly more drive between Palakkad and Kannur.

If you want to try an offbeat route with some extra kms, then you can try Avinashi-Annur-Ooty-Gudalur-Batheri-Panamaram-Mananthavady-Iritty-Mattannur-Kannur

Many Thanks Ranjithp1, so the roads between Calicut Aiport and Kannur are very bad is it...my onward jurney has to be via Calicut, we might take the Gudalur route on our way back maybe. Does not sound very promising either ways. Thanks Again.

If you have to touch Calicut, the fastest would probably be :

Chennai-Krishnagiri-Electronic City-NICE Road-Kanakapura-Kollegal-Gundlupet-Calicut-Kannur.

The ideal route to return would be (i.e if you don't need to touch Calicut)

Kannur-Iritty-Virajpet-Ammathi-Kushalnagar-Mysore-NICE Road-Electronic City-Chennai

(This would be about 50 to 100 kms less than the onward route shown above or the ones via Gudalur-Ooty or Palghat-Salem and the roads are fairly decent all through except in some short stretches in Kodagu)

Bad plus traffic is what makes the progress very slow.

Planning : BodhGaya - Rajgir - Deogarh (Baidyanath Dham Jyotirling)

Hi,

I am planning a trip to visit BodhGaya - Rajgir - Baidyanath Dham (Jyotirling temple in Jharkhand) with my family that includes elders and kids. I am planning to hire a car from BodhGaya to Baidyanath Dham and visit Rajgir, Nalanda on the way. The distance between the two places seems to be around 200 kms and online maps suggests that it could be covered in 3 hours.

A) How good is the road condition between these two places? Maps show that the journey would be on NH 333. Any idea about the road condition?

B) I am planning to start from BodhGaya in morning and visit Rajgir, Nalanda and other places. With this plan, my aim is to reach Deogarh around 9-10 PM. How safe is it to travel on these roads after dusk?

C) Any other places apart from Rajgir and Nalanda that can be covered on the way?

Could you please help me with your suggestions?

N-S Corridor, Nagpur-Delhi stretch, Road condition in MP

No updates on N-S corridor condition (particularly MP section, Nagpur-Gwalior).
Planning a trip from Nagpur to Delhi in last week of September 2013.

I am planning to drive (Renault Scala, DxL) from Nagpur to Delhi in the last week of September 2013 taking route exactly as suggested by Google.
Please post any updates of road condition in the stretch between Nagpur-Seoni-Narsinghpur-Sagar-Jhansi-Gwalior-Agra.
Will update road condition in this thread itself

Jhansi-Gwalior is terrible. Try a detour through Shivpuri
