Re: The mega "Road Updates" thread

Did anybody did a Bangalore - Guruvayoor recently via Mysore

Route - Mysore-Nanjangud-Gundlupet-Bandipur-Mudumalai-Gudalur-Nadugani-Nilambur-Perinthalmanna-Pattambi-Kunnamkulam-Guruvayur.

How are the road conditions, will I save any time compared to Salem-Pollachi Route.

BLR-Gvr via Mysore - Gundlupet is approx 400 Kms
BLR-GVR via Salem-Pollachi is approx 525 Kms

There is almost 125 Kms difference between these two routes, however my main intention is to save time rather than distance.

I doubt if you will save time. Full of twists and turns. And on top quite some distance around Gudalur is broken too.

The only advantage with this route is you could see lot of scenic places in between. Difficult to save time via Gundalpet.

What would be best way to get to NH7 before sun down ?

Alternatively, how is Solapur-Hyderabad road?

thanks in advance.

You may not be able to get a 4-lane drive. The best road is :

North Goa: Hyderabad-Raichur-Bagalkot-Belgaum-Goa
South Goa : Hyderabad-Raichur-Hospet-Hubli-Ankola-Karwar-Goa

I am trying to drive from Goa to Hyderabad. My question was getting to NH7 on the way to Hyderabad.
Which can be the fastest way?

thanks.

I was trying to point that it may not make that much a sense to get on to NH7.

If you still insist: The best would be may be from Sasnool.

Sorry. My mistake! My original answer still holds good. Just replace Bangalore by Hyderabad. I will report the post for the required change.

The Mega Road Update

I drove on the following route during 5-20 Sep 2014:

Chennai>OngoleBP>Addanki>Piduguralla>Hyderabad>Adi labad>Nagpur>Sagar>Jhansi>Gwalior>Agra>YE>Delhi: Excellent, overall.

The mega "Road Updates" thread-chennaidelhiroutemap.jpg

1. 6-lane road-widening works were in progress on many sections upto Ongole bypass; but, no worries, the diversions were equally good.

2. From Ongole BP to Hyderabad, very good 4-lane toll SH except intervening villages and towns, where the road merges into 2-lanes.

3. Since I crossed Hyderabad in small hours of the day, I took IRR via Secunderabad as there was no ORR connecting NH 2 and NH 7 in anti-clockwise direction.

4. Horrible sections after entering MH upto Hinganghat continued even after years. No works were in progress. One has to undergo this torture in N-S corridor.

5. Excellent bypasses for Nagpur, Seoni, Lakhnadon, Narsimhpur, Sagar, Lalitpur, Jhansi and Gwalior.

6. Sadly, no bypasses for Morena, Dholpur and Agra. Similarly, between Lakhnadon and Sagar, I drove through Kareli as a bridge on the bypass was not yet opened for traffic.

7. From Jhansi to Gwalior, alternate carriageway of 2-lanes was opened for traffic with good diversions.

8. I drove through a congested narrow sabzi mandi and Agra Fort railway stations as guided by MMI navigator.

9. Yamuna Expressway remained excellent as ever before.

Delhi>Murthal>Panipat>Karnal>Ludhiana>Jalandhar BP>Pathankot: Average, overall.

The mega "Road Updates" thread-delhipathankotroutemap.jpg

1. The proposed 6-lane NH 1 expressway was far from completion.

2. Many bridges and flyovers were still incomplete standing as heritage structures with no sign of progress.

3. I drove on service lanes at the busy peak hours in Ludhiana and other places with frequent traffic jams.

4. Excellent road side amenities all along.

Pathankot>Dhar>Dhanera>Banikhet>Dalhousie: Very good, overall.

The mega "Road Updates" thread-pathankotdalhousieroutemap.jpg

1. Very good 2-lane SH all along.

2. Diesel cost ₹ 58.03/litre at Pathankot.

Dalhousie>Kalatop>Khajjiar>Chamba: Average, overall.

The mega "Road Updates" thread-dalhousiechambaroutemap.jpg

1. Narrow 2-laned SH.

2. Unasphalted road to Kalatop was very narrow. I had to back up several times to give way for vehicles coming from the opposite direction.

3. The descent towards Chamba was very steep.

Chamba>Jot>Shahpur>Kangra>Hamirpur>Shimla: Bad, overall.

The mega "Road Updates" thread-chambashimlaroutemap.jpg

1. Narrow 2-laned bad SH mostly.

2. Road widening works were in progress on many sections.

Shimla>Purwanoo>Chandigarh>Roopnagar>Jalandhar BP>Amritsar: Good, overall.

The mega "Road Updates" thread-shimlaamritsarroutemap.jpg

Mixture of good 2 lanes and 4 lanes with very high traffic volume.

Amritsar>TarnTaran>Abohar BP>SriGanganagar>Bikaner BP>Jaisalmer: Very good, overall

The mega "Road Updates" thread-amritsarjaisalmerroutemap.jpg

1. Very good 2 laned roads all along.

2. Diesel was costlier in Rajasthan than in Punjab. So, my XUV 500 had tankful at BP COCOO just before crossing into Rajasthan.

Jaisalmer>JodhpurBP>BulletBabaOmBannaShrine>Pali>P alanpur>Mahesana>AhmedabadBP>Vadodara>Vapi: Excellent, overall.

The mega "Road Updates" thread-jaisalmervapimap.jpg

I drove on the old Narmada bridge on Bharuch BP in the day time and was shocked to see the damaged deck slabs were shaky and moving up and down, making the drive very scary. Last year, only two-wheelers and LMV were allowed on this precarious bridge. But, this time, even HTV were allowed on this weak bridge on NH 8.

Vapi>Silvassa, DNH>Ghodbunder>Thane>YashwantraoChavanExpressway >PuneBP>Dharwad-HubliBP>Chitradurga>Bangalore: Excellent, overall.

The mega "Road Updates" thread-vapibangaloremap.jpg

1. Most of the potholes/craters on Pune - Satara section have been patched up well. However, the diversions were nightmares still. It continued to be a sin to pay toll for this horrible stretch.

2. When I enquired the price at Konduskar's pump on Kholapur bypass, I was shocked to learn that diesel costs ₹ 66+/litre, which made me refuel my XUV 500 at BP COCOO near Dharwad bypass costing ₹ 64.02/litre.

Ravi Sir,
Unbelievable, you covered 7K kms in 15 days. I know you are used to such long journeys. All I could do is just . You covered almost 12 states I guess.

The map attached to the stretch as mentioned doesnt match.

Re: The mega "Road Updates" thread

I am planning to do Bangalore - Lucknow - Bangalore. I was thinking of doing Blr-Hyd-Nagpur-Lakhnadon-Jhansi-Kanpur-Lucknow. Any other suggestions ?

Also, since i am the only driver - i dont plan to do more than 1000-1100 km in a day. So the possible stops would be Nizamabad / Jhansi. What would be your suggestions ? Also hotels there ?

Re: The mega "Road Updates" thread

Any update on the Dahanu-Jawhar and the Dahanu-Bordi coastal highway? I am planning to do a Mumbai-Surat next week, but want to take this route if it's scenic and goes parallel to the sea.
