I drove my Father's Ford Fiesta from Bangalore to Vaikom on June 21st.
The route taken was
Bangalore (AECS Layout Kundalahalli)
Silk Board (Did not take the elevated Highway)
Hosur
Krishnagiri
Thoppur
Salem (New By pass is open to connect to NH47)
Bhavani
Avinashi
Coimbatore L&T By Pass
Walayar
Palakkad By Pass
Thrissur By Pass
Chalakkudy
Angamaly
Aluva
Kalamassery (Took Left at HMT Junction and proceeded via Kakkanad through Airport Seaport Road)
Tripunithura
Vaikom

We started at 4:45 AM and reached home at 1:45 PM.
Total 583 KMS covered in 9 hours with around 40 mins break.
I was the only driver (Did not let my Father driver).

Potholes have started appearing between Palakkad and Thrissur. Expect the road conditions to deteriorate soon.

So how was the Salem/CBE/Pallakad bypass?

I know Trichur bypass is very good. NH47 does not even touch the city.

I am not in a position to give exact directions but this is easy to find out.
There is a sign board indicating "Coimbatore Left" and your take the ramp of the flyover which actually joins NH47. Then there is a smooth drive all the way till some distance after Perundurai.

Is there a new Salem Bypass connecting NH7 (coming from Toppur/Bangalore) to NH47 (towards Sankari/Coimbatore)?

I think this is a new one. I had driven to Bangalore from Vaikom on June 12th and this by pass was not open. I am still not sure whether this is open while coming from Coimbatore.

It is not exactly a new bypass. A flyover helps in avoiding the busy circles near Salem and takes one into NH47 directly.

Earlier one reaches a junction where left goes into Salem city, straight to Madurai and right to Coimbatore.

The change that has happened is that 2 kms before this junction, a flyover is constructed. If one takes the left ramp onto the flyover, you can bypass the above said junction and reach into NH47.

If one proceeds without taking the flyover, we reach the above said junction.

Thanks, sbraj, that explains the new road that pramodpk talked about. Does one take the flyover to continue on NH7 also?

No. NH7 continues to be what it was earlier.

Hi,

I am planning on driving to Cochin from Bangalore in two weeks.

Is there any advantage in taking the mettur route? Or is it better to stick to the Bangalore-Salem four lane road.

How many kms can I save if I take the mettur route

Mettur route might save you some 20-25 kms and salem route might cost you some 80-100 bucks in toll. I would prefer the salem route.
Or if you really want to see some beautiful country side, deviate off NH 47 at karumathampatty, proceed to Annur - Sathymangalam - Anthiyur - Ammapettai (where in you join the Bhavani-Mettur route). The roads are newly laid with very less or no traffic (be warned of the lack of facilities like hotels, restrooms)

Muvattupuzha to Whitefield,Bangalore

Hello People ,

Planning to Drive to Whitefield,Bangalore on 21stof this Month -From Muvattupuzha.Driving with Family.

I am Planning on starting on 21st Morning(6-7AM) to Reach Evening at Bangalore.

Since it is a long time I took this Route, Want to know the Route Where by We Can Reach fastest as well as better Roads. Please Point any Diversions/Toll Naka's as well.

How is the Condition of Mannuthy-Coimbatore Stretch of NH47 Especially at Kuthiran ?

If I take Bhavani-Mettur-Thoppur to Connect to NH7 ,Is this a Faster Route?
OR
Bhavani-Sankagiri-Omalur Route

To Reach Whitefield ,Is there any shorter route without touching Hosur?

Is this Distance Coverable under 9 hours during Day time from Muvattupuzha/Cochin? and Approximately Total Kms it'll take?

Thanks.

Earlier you start more the distance you would cover within Kerala, because Kerala stretch of NH47 is going to cost you maximum amount of time.

do not take the thoppur route,NH7 4laning has been completed,so go via Salem, you would save time and it is a fast drive as well.

Approx 550-600kms,9hours-IMO I dont think so,it should take you around 11-12 hours with breaks, you would lose time till you reach Avinashi as well negotiating Walayar check post would result in time loss. From Avinashi to Blore it is a breeze.

@Deep - Its one straight road from MVPA to BLR. Take the usual MVPA-Angamaly-Chalakudy-Thrissur-Palakkad-Coimbatore-Salem-Krishnagiri-Hosur-Bangalore road.

Last December (2009) I started sharp 5:15 from MVPA & reached Salem by 1:00 PM & parked home at 5:30 PM with a sane driving & not exceeding 100. So I would suggest you start early too.

Take the route Ranjit recommended via Salem instead of Thopur.

Possible with short breaks. IMO, it would be 450 Kms from MVPA to Krishnagiri & another 90 Kms from Krishnagiri to Whitefields. So approximately 550 Kms in 9 hours. This is all on the higher side.

Possible. But why? This is also the longest route & not sure on the road condition. Best way is to go via Hosur-Attibelle.

I think, you can do it in 9 hrs.

7hrs 30min would be fine with one break from Angamaly to Silkboard (L&T bye pass entrance to Silk board can be done in 4.30hrs (non stop) to 6hrs)

To reach Whitefield, Attibelle-Sarjapur route should be the best I believe.
Since you are starting from Muvattupuzha, you may also consider the TN route.
