I went through Jodhpur and except for a very bad stretch of about ~20-30 kms, between Balesar and Agolai, the roads were great.

While nearing Jodhpur and for some part even after Jodhpur the road isn't as smooth as one would expect Rajasthan highways to be but I was able to manage speeds between 80-110 here.

Best route to travel between Jaipur and Jaisalmer

Google maps shows me three option passing through district roads.. The route-1 via Bikaner is around 100kms longer?

Which option should I prefer?

Re: Best route to travel between Jaipur and Jaisalmer

Go via Bikaner. While longer it is certainly faster.

Though Naguar you would have have to suffer some bad roads and some section of single lane tarmac. Around Kuchaman, Also it would be preferable to go Kuchaman-Didwana-Nagaur. The road shoing up on your picture is not even a district road and would be mostly single lane tarmac.

And except at Nagaur, till Phalodi not many option to stop and eat.

Having said that if you do go via Nagaur do stop at end of Nagaur bye-pass towards Jodhpur and partake Mirchi Pakoda and Kesar tea. Very Famous.

Re: Best route to travel between Jaipur and Jaisalmer

If you take the Jaipur-Sikar-Bikaner road, be ready to encounter some road construction around sikar (near the Sobhasaria Engineering college) and between Laxmangarh and Fatehpur as the two lane national highway is now being converted into a 4 lane (work between Jaipur and Sikar is almost complete). Except these, the roads are in pretty good shape till Bikaner.

Moreover, after the Sobhasaria Engineering college, Sikar (which will come on the right side while going to Jaisalamer) a cut on the left will lead to the Sikar bypass. Taking the bypass will easily save half an hour.

I would also suggest the way via Jodhpur. Is equal to the Bikaner road minus the construction bit. Highway between Jodhpur and JAisalmer is super awesome.

Best,

Re: Best route to travel between Jaipur and Jaisalmer

Thank you guys.

Tapish,
Whats the route to Jodhpur? I don't want to go to Ajmer.. Is there any bypass for Ajmer and how much time would that save?

I travelled few years back to Ajmer. The Jaipur - Ajmer road used to be in a great condition.. How is the road beyond Ajmer?

There is a bypass just before Ajmer. You dont need to go into the city. You will follow the golden quadrilateral till Beawar before taking the Jodhpur turn. Roads up to Jaisalmer are a breeze.

Hope this helps.

I would suggest that you go via Kishangarh-Ajmer-Beawar-Jodhpur-Pokharan-Jaisalmer.

Approximate drive timings:

Jaipur-Ajmer:2.5hrs
Ajmer-Jodhpur:3-4hrs
Jodhpur-Jaisalmer:4hrs

Roads good throughout and the NH8 work is also almost complete through Ajmer.Good rest facilities enroute at Ajmer,Beawar,Pali,Jodhpur,Dechhu,Pokharan etc.

Re: Best route to travel between Jaipur and Jaisalmer

I concur
http://goo.gl/maps/w6XMT through Beawar is great

I have taken this route and it was quite fast with low traffic.
Then there is the Sambhar lake option( I have taken that too). Traffic is low, but roads can be bumpy. On the plus side you get to see the Sambhar salt flats and some wildlife(Sambhar, peacocks)

Re: Best route to travel between Jaipur and Jaisalmer

Do not take the Jaipur Bikaner route as it is under construction and widening. being rainy season, it should deteriorate further.

Route that we took last year and I suggest would be-
Jaipur-Kishangarh-Ajmer-Beawar-Bar-Jodhpur. Appx 350km (5-6 hrs)
Most of this 6 lane highway is complete till around beawar. Keep an eye for road going right to bar & jodhpur from beawar. After beawar the road is ok, but the traffic reduces after Bar and is scarce till Jodhpur. We did our lunch here and proceeded to Jaisalmer.
Jodhpur - Pokharan - Jaisalmer appx 250km (4-5 hrs)
initial stretch of about 25 km is bad, rest highway is amazing 4 lane and traffic is generally less. so don't overspeed.

hope that helps.

Re: Best route to travel between Jaipur and Jaisalmer

Please suggest a route from Amritsar to Ahmedabad with a stop in between wherein one can have a quality night rest.No night driving as love to capture the scenery. Always start early-before 6 am and stop by 7 pm or latest by 8!!!

I believe we are going .
But that's a long route of about 1300 odd km. the straight route would be-
Amitsar-Hanumangarh-Kishangarh-Chittorgarh-Udaipur-Ahmedabad.
Kishangarh to Ahmedabad is approx. 600km and is a nicely laid 4 and 6 lane highway and you can get decent average speeds. But I have no idea about the Amritsar to kishangarh route.

When you say bumpy, was it bumpy in your Safari too?
And is it bad in a longish stretch, or for just a bit?
Im taking the tucson, so i suppose bumpy could be tolerable, but not so much.
