Any reasons to go via Kannur? If not:

Mysore-Madikeri-Sampaje-Sullia-Jalsoor-Cherkala-Kasaragod. Good roads all the way.

If you have to go to Kannur,

Mysore-Hunsur-Gonikoppal-Virajpet-Iritty-Matttanoor-Kannur

Been a while since I drove here and I have some time on hand as I am on leave on Friday .
Any restrictions on night driving anywhere between Gonikoppal to Kannur ?
What about driving through Nagahole / Kabini ?

BTW , I have also posted in the Bangalore - Kannur thread

Kabini/Nagarhole there are restrictions, but none via Virajpet. But the route via Kannur is a big roundabout if the idea is just to drive. Jalsoor-Cherkala is much better.

Like I said , I have some time on hand . Been a while since I drove here ( Last was in 2010)

How are the road conditions ?

If the Kabini / Nagarhole is better roads , I can start early morning so that I cross this stretch around sunrise.

There are night driving restrictions around Nagarhole. So you cant drive I think. Virajpet-Iritty-Mattanur-Kannur is good. No idea about Nh17 route to Karsargod (Thaliparamba/Payyannur). Its dense for sure.

The road was not that great when I had undertaken my journey during January 2015. If you have an option to avoid the route, please gleefully accept it.

Yes. The route via Nagarahole. Both routes from Kabini and Bharathavadi going through Nagarahole. Particularly, the one via Bharathavadi is best avoided and Kabini route may just be ok!

The above route namely ampere's route has been carefully designed to avoid all the bad roads. You deviate at your peril.
This route was a life-saver today when I drove back from Udupi to Bengalooru. Terrible lorry/bus traffic after Bhadravathi and could not wait to get to the right turn at Arsikere. The Umblibail-Bhadravathi and Arsikere-CR Patna stretches are a dream to drive on.
Agumbe was shrouded in cloud cover and was a charming sight too!

I am planning to drive back to Bangalore from Udupi tomorrow (4/25), can you tell me the exact route you took from Udupi?

Thanks

This is the route from Kota (further north of Udupi) via Agumbe.

EDIT: the Muttinakoppa road which is the right turn after Thirthahalli looks scary because it is narrow with deep drop off at the shoulders but does not last long before it joins SH65.

Travelled to Mlore via CRPatna - Holenarsipura - Arkalgudu - Shanivarasanthe - Somawarapete - Madikeri - Sullia - Puttur today.

Good roads all the way. The section before HNarsipura is freshly laid.

The road from Somawarapete to Madikeri is almost like ghat section with lot of twisties. I noticed that none of the vehicles plying in this section honk though there are numerous blind curves. I even witnessed a close call between a bus that was ahead of me and another bus coming on the opposite direction. I was thinking they would stop and beat each other up but they drove away as if it was everyday business.

I would not recommend this road to someone who is not used to driving on ghats and if you have passengers with motion sickness. Ghat driving etiquette has to be strictly followed on this section to be safe.

Started at 4:15 AM Friday from Bannerghatta road and reached Mlore at 12:30. Breakfast was at Neelsagar in Kodava samaja building Madikeri. Nice decent place with clean rest rooms.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi All, Planning to travel to Mangalore this week end. Which route is preferred? Via Madikeri or via Charmadi? Google maps shows the distance via Madikeri as 417kms & via Charmadi as 374km. Heard Charmadi is full of traffic & likelihood of traffic jams is very high.

There was a last min change in plan. Had to stay back late night as my son wasn't keeping well. Started at 245 am on Friday ( instead of the earlier plan of a Thursday night start ). Drove via Charmadi and reached konaje at 830 am. That's less than 6 hours without any breaks. Same way , started 8 pm on Saturday evening and reached Bannerghata road at 3 am. This included a 45 mins stop at CCD Channrayapatna.

Depends on what time of the day you drive. This time , the timings I did were similar to what we used do in Shiradi We always drive in the night and hence prefer Charmadi. Late evenings ( after 11 pm ) and early mornings are usually easier on Charmadi.

During monsoons , I wouldn't recommend Charmadi though. The hillocks have been scrapped haphazardly during the recent joke called road widening. A heavy rain should easily cause a minor landslide on some of the turns.

While downhill , I had the ABS kicking in on 3 occasions due to wet mud from the road widening work and while going up , I could feel the rear losing grip on one of the hairpins. Also , Belur - Mudigere is narrow and most of these truckers wouldn't give way as they have a risk of getting stuck / toppling on the loose soil. So you have to get off the road shoulder at times and this can be tricky.

Also , these days I am seeing a very high number of overloaded sand trucks on this road.

I would recommend Madikeri - Puttur- Mangalore for hassle free driving. Having said that , we still prefer taking Charmadi.
