Excess of anything can be harmful to the body. If you stick to the reccomended dose of protein supplements and flush the body by drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day, i don't see why it should create any probs, unless you had weak kidneys to start with.

Quote:
My long time neighbour who was a serious practicing body builder, had his first heart attack at age 43.
A family friend of ours who was a state level badminton player never smoked, never consumed alcohol, never ate non-veg, was never overweight, never did weight training, never took supplements or steroids....got a massive heart attack at around the same age.

So a person's health issues are not always directly related to how he has lived his life.

consuming a large amount of protein does not help in any way and it causes its own share of problems. vikram18 has explained that well already.
we usually need 1mg perkg body weight of 1st class protein for maintenance, and in exceptionally hard working body builders, in their anabolic phase, their requirement may go upto 2mg/kg body weight.
we always have to allow for some wastage during digestion and metabolism. but still taking more than 2mg/kg body wt of 1st class proteins makes your stool more expensive, thats it. and your kidneys overworked.

gout risk is increased in people(consuming a large qty of protein,specifically-large qties of purines) who already have a propensity towards it. unfortunately, we still have no idea which one of us have that propensity. so all people are give the instruction to take protein in moderation.

most health problems caused by bodybuilding are because lack of a balanced approach to it.

few examples below- list is not exhaustive by any means.
we dont get any training in excercise physiology or anatomy applied to body building in med school, so all that is written below is self taught and inferred. please correct me if I go wrong.

Heart attacks- not enough cardio training
joint problems- poor form during the excercise
stiffness- lack of stretching/flexibility training
disc prolapse/back pain- poor form and due to lack of core muscle training
diarrhoea/kidney damage etc- due to abuse of supplements

everyone, in the rush to get big/ ripped, will cut corners and cause damage to themselves.

take it slow, make bodybuilding a lifestyle, and it actually will benefit your health.

moderation is the key.
strength, flexibilty, functionality, cardiovascular fitness should be the goals- not getting big!

sorry for the preaching. anyway- most people posting on this thread already know what they are doing.

But it really made me think about my long time workout needs.
I think everyone's priorities change as they grow older and thankfully most of us grow wiser too. The key is to understand that your body changes as you age and change your workout/diet routine accordingly.

Most of the breakthroughs that have been made in most fields including nutrition/supplementation are comparatively recent. So when someone comes up with an example of a bodybuilder who was in his prime 30 years ago, you have to take into consideration the products and knowledge available to him in those days; woefully inadequate!

Things are far different now. If you use supplements with adequate information and sensibly, they can be immensely effective. If not, like Shantanu says, ANYTHING in excess is harmful.

The example TSK has quoted is of a fool, who has exceeded the recommended dosage by a great extent. It's certainly not fair to blame Carnitine for that! More is certainly not better. He'll get diarrhoea even with 4 litres of milk and be bedridden. But then, nobody will advocate drinking 4 litres of milk in the first place!
Heart attacks can occur for a number of reasons; blaming supplementation and protein is not always correct or even true! Most people who suffer, primarily miss the very reason for supplementation; it is OVER AND ABOVE a healthy, disciplined lifestyle. A lot of people think that, in fact, it's OK to disregard the basics, simply because they're taking supplements. In most, if not all, cases, they have only themselves to blame. Supplements just happen to be a handy excuse.

In fact, if I may stick my neck out, EVERY athlete today, leave alone the models and the film star wannabees, take supplements. Inspite of that I don't see long queues outside Gout specialists or nephrologists' consulting rooms!

I think you meant to say 1gram/kg of body weight, coz each scoop of Whey Protein has around 20grams of proteins.

I see soo many supplement out there(not on the forum.)

They will binge drink over the weekends, eat deep fried stuff from your corner kabab walla, smoke indoors without ventilation and then try and take the piss out of a guy who hits the gym every day, does his cardio and weights and decided to take a MRP or why supplement.

Talk about double standards.

Its great to have rippergeo, vikram18 etc and others(?) on the forum who to the best of their professional training can tell it like it is.

when is it best suited to be consumed. before the workout or after. my workout timings are from morning 6.30 to 7.45.
If its one scoop a day then post workout is ideal.

You've put it in a nutshell. Then there are those who do exactly what you've said, go to the gym to check out the babes, lift a tiny dumbbell or two, pop their fat burners in the morning and then blame the fat burner for not producing results. In fact, people binge more thinking that supplements will offset this excess.

Talk about stupidity!

Lift a dumbbell?

What are you saying they cant afford to break into a sweat.

Hopefully they are just binging and not on the fat burner too

I've been using a treadmill at home. an hour a day. the biggest problem is boredom! cable shows the most useless stuff. I try varying my speeds every 2-3 mins and that helps.

any other tips?
changing the incline has to be done manually on this model, so cant do that during the workout.

have been regular only for the last week or so, and motivation is very low as cardio does not give me the kick that I get from weight training. Help!

Maybe you can try an hour of swimming twice a week or jog outside in a park on weekends? Difficult to dodge boredom when on a treadmill at home, but maybe an iPod will help.

here's another one.

because somebody heard olive oil (or some funky brand of oil) is good for heart, they take it, and then add an extra pound of it in food because "it's good for health"

Most people depend on supplements and forget about good, clean home made food and eating 6 meals a day instead of the typical 3 times a day. It has to be a balance between both, food and supplements. The other problem is that most people don't get the nutrition right and then overtrain at the gym. There is no need to workout more than an hour and work each muscle group more than once a week. I have seen some idiots working out for 2+ hours .

I currently take Whey and Creatine and they work very well for me. I have used them for 2 years earlier as well without any problems and only gained from them.

I have used treadmills for a long time (at gyms) and for long jogs (upto 10 kms). I personally didn't like any music or TV while jogging as I felt distracted and would break my rhythm. I like to hear myself breathe & run. Also there always has been a big mirror in front or a window. With a mirror I watch myself run (no self admiration stuff ). Basically watch the extra stuff which "jump" and say "I have to keep going to get rid of that".

But nothing like going for a jog early in the morning. I do that rarely but feel good when I do it.
