Deep State
OTT : MGM+
3.5/5

This is a British espionage thriller which is between UK (MI6), US (CIA) and Lebanese Intelligence.

I love this genre and it's hard to find good series from this genre. This is not as good as some of the previous ones but, it has an intriguing storyline with a little bit of action thrown in and popular locales of Middle East based espionage like Beirut and Tehran makes it an interesting watch.

Mark Strong as the lead actor is always dependable and makes the ongoings interesting.

Manvat murders - Marathi (Hindi audio available)

The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)-1.jpg

Started off well, but drags on midway. All episodes seem to carry on with the same incident/theme so nothing excites you.
Rating - 2.5/5. Watchable (SonyLiv)

Jai Mahendran - Malayalam

The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)-2.jpg

Nothing special in this and kind of boring after couple of episodes. Expected it to be comic political drama like Perilloor Premier League but no where close. Guess lack of supporting characters (artists) let it down.
Rating - 2/5. Can miss it. (SonyLiv)

1000 babies - Malayalam

The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)-3.jpg

Pretty decent thriller with good performances. Nice visuals especially in the first episode. Will keep you hooked but sort of predictable towards the end.
Rating - 3.5/5. Recommended (Hotstar)

Snakes & ladders - Tamil

The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)-4.jpg

Good acting by the kids and location. Other than that, it's just a straight forward story. Fictional thriller by let down by the slow pace. Too many loopholes and certain things are a bit over the top.

Rating - 2.5/5. Can skip it. (Amazon Prime)

Season 2 of The Diplomat was released on Netflix earlier this week. With a short run of six episodes, this season is just as good as the first.

The Walking Dead (TWD)
OTT : Netflix
4/5

After getting blown by "FROM" which I reviewed in my previous posts, I started getting fascinated by this genre (Zombie) as I always used to think of these movies as third rated or low budget movies.

I look forward to every new episode of FROM so you can imagine how much I am hooked.

Coming back to TWD, I'm surprised how I missed such an awesome show (particularly for thriller, horror fans) it was released in 2012 and has a whopping 12 seasons of 10+ episodes in each season. That's like 120 episodes. Well, the show must have done something good to get that kind of budget for production.

Story is about a strange disease that affected America and this story is based around Atlanta, GA where many people are struggling to survive from "Walkers" who are actually people converted to Zombies. Every human who dies become s walker so there are tons of them across the series.

Multiple characters, their backlines, how they survive or get killed. Wooosh! it's a roller coaster ride.

Special mention to the lead hero, I haven't seen a more assertive and perfect leader in a group survival theme. Btw, Rick is British but, acts more American than one.

There is just too much of violence and gore (kids and parents to stay away strictly) and after a while, it's sickening even for adults including horror fans. I keep the remote handy and fast forward many unwarranted scenes. But, the whole series is an addictive.

I finished 4-seasons (40+ episodes) in about 6-weeks and currently in Season 5 (EP 4) now I am tired and will take a break unless someone tells me things are going to pick up even crazy now.

I can imagine why this franchise became so popular (Video games, figurines, clothing, memorabilia etc.). Make up is top notch for the zombies and they look really scary and different from one zombie to another.

I now see a few more new zombie movies released on Netflix. Any recommendations there? Is any as good as TWD?

Cheers and will keep watching this on and off till I finish 12 seasons.

I stopped watching The Walking Dead around season 10 and somehow finished the whole series (till season 12) on and off. I used to wait every week for episodes and leaks when the show was running, boy was it fun. Having said all that, it's still the best zombie TV series despite some very obvious shortcomings in the later seasons.

To answer your question, if I remember correctly, it's really good till season 7 with decent pacing. However, afterwards the pacing is slow and episodes feel very stretched out. The story and the intrigue still keeps you locked in though, so the pacing might tire you out, but the plot will keep you wanting to watch the next episode. When you finish all the seasons, you'll realise the glaring plot holes etc, but still feel satisfied enough with the realisation that no other series of the zombie genre comes close to The Walking Dead.

After finishing The Walking Dead, you can watch spinoff series (which came out after The Walking Dead ended) from the same studio with characters from the main cast other than Rick as the main lead.

TV series you can watch (not particular to any streaming platform):

  • The Walking Dead: The ones who live.
I haven't watched this one in full, but in a YouTube review and I feel it's decent enough to warrant a full watch.
  • The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
I haven't watched this, but I might in future as he's my favorite character after Rick.
  • The Walking Dead: Dead City.
I haven't watched this and have no immediate plans to watch it either.
  • The Last of Us (Season 1 finished & ongoing)
It's based on a very famous video game of the namesake^ and it takes a different view on the spread of the zombie virus. The casting is good and so is the plot.
  • All of Us are Dead (Season 1 finished & ongoing)
It depends if you like Korean television and the antics in K-Dramas. It also takes a different approach to spread of the zombie virus (a bit dumb). It's a decent one time watch in my opinion.

Movies you can watch:

  • World War Z.
  • 28 Days Later & 28 Weeks later. 28 months later is in production I believe.
  • Dawn of the Dead.
  • Train to Busan (only this and not the sequel)

These are the best Zombie movies as of today (in no particular order) and should be the must watch movies for every fan of Zombie genre. In my search atleast, I have not found any other movie that would make this list.

Note - The resident evil franchise is an acquired taste, hence, they don't find a place on my list.I'm still 50-50 on them even after a decade.

There are 2 comedy movies on Zombie apocalypse as well which I like:

  • Shawn of the Dead.
It's actually a brilliant and hilarious movie.
  • Zombieland 1 & 2.
The first installment is a very entertaining watch and the sequel is very average, but still decent enough to be watched once.

Zombie genre of Movie/TV Shows is something I love, so I hope that I was able to provide reasonable (and not at all lengthy) information to you moving forward.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

The Day of the Jackal - 3.5 / 5

A refreshing remake of the highly popular book of Frederick Forsyth and already made into two movies in the past. Eddie Redmayne is absolutely brilliant in the role of the Jackal but the book has been dragged too much into expanding into the character stories to make it into a series. I wish they had done a movie and kept it to 2 or even 3 hours; now that would have been absolutely brilliant.

And with only the first five episodes released, I’m hoping the rest of the series picks up the action (pun intended). Given this is a series; there’s always the potential of extending it beyond season 1 (which would be interesting as it would go against both the previous two movies).

Request everyone to share the OTT platform as we have so many now and it helps for an easy search.

I am big fan of this book and any movie adaptions that has been made on it till date. I still feel the book was the best. I see this is releasing on Peacock on November 14th in the US. I have already added it to my watch list.

In The Land of Saints and Sinners
OTT : Amazon Prime
4/5

Liam Neeson has been churning out same type of action movies for a pretty long time and almost all his movies are without doubt enjoyable and watchable but, it was getting a bit repetitive.

This movie is different and is probably a better one than his last few odd movies.

Story is that he is a hit man trying to retire from the game in a small Irish town and that's when a bunch of IRA bombers arrive into this beautiful quaint town and disturb the peace and intimidate some of the people he loves.

This is when Mr. Leeson gets into action and shows that taking "panga" with him is not a good idea.

My favorites is the IRA story, Ireland is simply gorgeous and scenic country and their accent is funny and super enjoyable makes this movie a must see for not just Liam Neeson fans but, anyone who wants to enjoy a nice simple action movie.

P.S : It's simply unbelievable that Liam is 70+ and still churns out these action movies. We need to take a page out of his health report card and replicate...Cheers to him.

Agree with most of your recommendations but there are way too many zombie movies out there. This is a good list if you ask me.

But personally, I’d add one more

Warm Bodies : 4.5 / 5

Quite a satircal take but very well made movie with nice humor embedded where possible.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Guys, just wanted to drop in another good word for the JustWatch app. You can search for "newly added" stuff only on platforms you have subscribed to, and further add filters (e.g. I have enforced a minimum rating of 6.8 on IMDB).

What's more, if you see something you like, you can add it to your watchlist. I have created a second watchlist for stuff I want to see with the family.

In this age of entertainment overload on streaming channels, the JustWatch app is just fantastic to discover new stuff, and add it to your watchlist.

I have been recommending just watch app on the forum since years. It's brilliant.
Also, enforce minimum rating of 6. There are lots of good titles between the rating of 6-6.5.

Douglas in Cancelled - 4/5
4 epsiode series on BBC player where Karen Gillian (Nebula from Marvel) delivers a power packed performance. Definitely worth a watch, even though the story is not new.

The Day of the Jackal - 3.75/5
Very bond like, good acting, decent screenplay and good music/BGM keeps the first 5 episodes rolling.

+1 to Eddie being very good. Even though its a series, the episodes are not very draggy and the music/BGM keeps you hooked to the screen. Unfortunate that Ursula Corbero (Tokyo ) doesnt get a lot of screen time.

I think they will take it to a second season, hopefully they can do justice

The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)-.jpg

Terrific series. I had watched the S1 & S2 last year and was waiting for S3. Initially planned to wait till all the episodes are out, but couldn't resist at all.

This time I forced my wife also to watch the series, so we started from S1 E1. Though I have watched it last year, I felt same amount of interest/thrill re watching it. So much that we binged whole S1&S2 within a week.

Highly recommended for audiences who likes Horror - Mystery thriller/drama. People who liked LOST will love this for sure.

Any recommendation for similar series's ? PS:Must be completed. Can't wait for new episodes
