Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Webseries Name : Freedom at Midnight
Genre : Historical
OTT : SonyLIV

My Rating : 4.5 / 5

This is an excellent series that shows the last 18-24 months before the partition of India. This is a series that everyone should watch so that they get a sense of history. I would highly recommend this series and this is a must watch series IMHO. All actors have done justice to their role and the background music is top notch.

Patriot 2015

8.5/10

Such an underrated tv show. I haven't seen discussion about it anywhere.

It is up there along with Slow horses for me. We could all see John in ourselves, Michael Dorman has done a phemonenal job on this character. The show is very dark and slow, don't know how many will like it. I would 100% recommend it.

I watched 3 episodes last year and then abandoned it because of pace. First episode was too good but then it just got too slow for my liking.

While I'm on this thread, and not sure if I have recommended Will Trent earlier (on Hotstar). I'm onto the second season. It's a police procedural for those who like that genre. It's set in Atlanta and is overall done well (acting, story, editing etc)

I agree, this is a fantastic show. and must watch. - 9/10 for me.
I think they have intentionally mellowed down the violence and bloodbath during this period, which is understandable.
the actual agreement on the partition of India was very much similar to a typical corporate arrangement or succession... and each of the leaders (Gandhi, Nehru, Jinnah, Patel) are all human with their own ambition, complex, insecurities.

The agency has Michael Fassbender and Richard Gere and is more subtle. Lioness is the opposite with Spec Ops and raids. I'm trying to cut down TV time but the list of shows to watch keeps growing. Next on my list is Landman.
Paramount+ is shown in JioCinema premium but I can’t find these shows there. Did you watch it somewhere else?

I’m in Canada. I figured they should be on Jio in India. Maybe they are making some cuts for different markets before making them available, both these shows had some explicit scenes.

The Agency on Paramount 3.5 / 5

This has a all the ingredients for a good espionage series and hopefully maintains the momentum it has garnered up till now. Personally it grew on me only after couple of episodes. Too many things happen and you have to keep it up with without losing focus (i.e. no looking at the phone) once you manage to do that its rather interesting.

Some bits feel too far fetched for me but overall it is well written and directed.

The Breakthrough
OTT : Netflix
3.5/5

This is touted as the longest investigation in Swedish history of a double homicide. The cop is so relentless that he puts his family life at stake to catch the killer.

It's sad, dark, slow, investigative and with zero clues.

How they identify the killer through "Genealogy" was eye-opening.

It's a slow burn but, is a decent watch just 4-episodes is good though I think they could have kept it to 3-episodes..

Watched AK-47 (not the Kannada movie), the true story of the maker of the rifle on Prime Video. Liked it for the historical story. 4/5.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Watched Black Warrant on Netflix, finally a good hindi series after ages, occasional slippages here and there but overall very nicely made, the casting is top notch, Shashi Kapoor's grandson resembles him so much in terms of his looks as well as his mannerisms, not sure if the latter was deliberate.
The events of the 80s chronicled in the series were weaved in very skillfully, Rahul Bhat as the DSP and the 3 ASP were so wonderfully cast, each one of them shining in their roles.
Some very coarse language, use headphones.

Highly recommended, 4/5

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Squid Game Season 2 on Netflix.

A good continuation of Season 1. Liked the way the games were designed for this season. The tracks and overall BGM especially were quite enthralling; seeing a lot of the music becoming very popular on reels, etc. The awe factor for the way things were playing out, was less as compared to the first season. The storyline went along expected lines. Nonetheless, a worthy watch. Hope the makers bring back the same excitement and goosebumps of Season 1 in the concluding Season 3 now, which is slated for release this year itself.

Rating: 3.5/5

Yellowstone: All Seasons
5/5

Finally finished watching the final season. Boy, what an ending. This has been a surreal series. Supposedly a cowboy show but has some very strong female characters like Beth, Monica, Teeter and some other minor ones like Emily and Lynelle. In fact, the strongest character (any gender) of this show happens to be Beth Dutton. She just dominates the last season and even the finale. Just like the show Shogun where Mariko shines above the rest.

PS: I have also watched the prequels 1883 and 1923. They are great too.

Have started the Shogun series, still undecided to complete the whole series. I like Japanese warrior movies of the yore than this inclusive White man version.

Black Warrant- Hindi Series
OTT : Netflix
4.5/5

This is one of the best series that I came across in recent times. It's a riveting story of life in Tihar Jail, Delhi during the 1980's from the eyes of a unsual and rookie jailer- Sunil Kumar Gupta.

It's hard, gripping and absolutely thrilling to see how the conditions are in a prison for under trails and hardened criminals.

The series focuses on some of the real events that happened in 1980's in Tihar jail and they got the color, clothing and overall 1980's feel to the T.

Zahan Kapoor (Shashi Kapoor's grandson) acted brilliantly and was the highlight of this series. Even Rahul Bhat (Anyone remembers "UGLY"-another awesome movie) plays his role equally well.

Other characters also stood out for their performances.

It's a sad, thought provoking and tru'ish tale of life behind prison in India.
