ABBA: Against the Odds 2024

Steaming on Amazon BBC Player

If you are an ABBA fan, then do definitely check it out.

The one thing that struck me was when they were asked why don't you move to Monaco or Luxemburg to save on 85% income tax, they just said they can't think of living anywhere else other than Sweden. Hats off!

Also, I wonder how some journalists can ask questions like "you are rich, but are you happy?"

Another highlight was Agnetha singing in Barry Gibb's voice.

Don't miss it if you are an ABBA fan, and if even you aren't one, you would be surprised to know almost all of their hits have been copied into Bollywood songs.

The Night Agent - Season 2 (Netflix)

5 Episodes down and while it is a good watch, it is not as captivating as the first season. The lead actor for some reason seems very artificial compared to the first season, where he was the shining star.

3/5 stars, just for the story alone. The acting and actors could have been better.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Paradise - a Hulu original is dropping episodes on hotstar every Tuesday here in India. A sci-fi thriller, it has many allusions to present times - billionaire tech titans being in control of the US federal government being one of them. Only 3 episodes are available in India so far (though I think in the US 7 out of 8 were made available to reviewers). It's so far quite good. Each episode is a backstory of a character which comes back and is woven into the main thread. I'd deduct one star for some of the scenes lingering on a bit longer than they should. Very good otherwise.

Watching Snowfall on Hotstar (FX)

Story is in the 70s in US and revolves around Drug trade and 3 different set of characters.
1 set of Mexicans
1 set of Afro-Americans
1 set of CIA operatives (helping the drug trade :-) )

It is quite gripping and well made. There are a total of 6 seasons and I am currently in season 2.
I am surprised it hasn't been recommended here so far.

Anyone who likes this genre, should give it a try. It will not disappoint.
Good direction and good acting all round.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Team, I have active subscription for Disney Hotstar and Zee5.
Currently I am on an official trip to London.
On Zee5, I was trying to watch Identity, but it only plays the trailer, the full movie does not play. I tried log off and log in.
Disney Hotstar shows "invalid user session".
Please can someone advise?

Netflix and Amazon Prime is working fine.

SonyLiv shows I have to subscribe to Premium, whereas I already am.

Pataal Lok-2
OTT : Netflix
5/5

I will go against the tide and will say that this season was better than the previous season. It’s a rare feat to achieve and this team has done it. Right from the gruesome opening scene to the last episode this series grips you by the throat and keep you entangled in that grip.

Also probably one of the rare achievement that main killer is not known till the end and real reason for the crime. Another reason this series had a special aura was the location chosen-Nagaland. It’s a gorgeous looking place and reminds me of where I currently live.

Without doubt, this rides on the broad shoulders of Hathi Ram Chaudhary who is a perfect blend of heroism, naivety and soft all rolled into one. His dressing sense is spot on as all policemen wear checkered or plain shirts with trousers and “sneakers” and how he walks also captures the mannerisms of a tired and aging officer.

Woman cop in Nagaland also did a great job and so did the young IPS officer. It was also nice to see Nagesh Kukunoor surface and deliver a good performance.

This series is highly recommended and will definitely leave a mark.

I can’t wait for Season 3 which hopefully comes sooner than it took for Season 2.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

I have been watching K-Serials in the past couple years, and many of them have some amount portrayal of corporate work culture in South Korea as background.

One thing that was consistent across all the serial on work culture is the iron-clad hierarchy and feudalistic nature. Boss is always right, the subordinates have to swallow any amount of insult and unfairness. Coming from IT work culture, it was quite shocking to watch.

Just yesterday I finished watching a 20 episode show, Misaeng: Incomplete Life. I think it is the best K-Serial I have watched until now. It is on Netflix.

That show is 100% about corporate work life in a commodities trading company. Very realistic stuff, showing the struggle of interns, and middle level managers dealing with every day business and office politics.

Tehran
OTT : Apple TV+
4.5/5

This is a 3 season fare and I'm writing this after just 4 episodes. It's a good show and has lot of tinges of the "Fauda" series obviously because its made by Israeli folks and this time its not Hamas but, the Iranians.

A wonderfully well paced thriller with constant action, tremendous plot twists and an intriguing storyline with not too much violence.

Niv Sultan (Tamar) who is the main lead has a layered character and is exceptional. Another supporting actor who stood out is the Iranian Intelligence Officer Shaun Toub (Faraz) as the tenacious officer on her tail.

I can only imagine this series should get better as each episode unfolds. Middle Eastern drama is as always intriguing and some shows like this get it right.

If your subscription is via reliance jio then an additional step for Sony Liv is to switch on your STB, go to the relevant app and it would show a code. Enter that code on your phone version of the app. I had to do that even when I was in the country.

Are you watching Season 3? Where? I have been waiting for the new season but last I heard, the premiere had been delayed. I see there is one episode on (illegal) streaming websites though.

Great! Another one to watch now apart from The Agency

The Agency, I found it to be lukewarm, not much to offer. Except that it is a remake of the original The Bureau, which was a hands down 10/10.

The Agency seems a little disoriented, the characters lack originality. The story focuses more on the tactical aspect of the trade rather than the strategic aspect. They even tried to copy the background musics some of the times, but it is rather terrible.

The Agency is at best a 6/10. Better to watch The Bureau again. Utterly, utterly disappointed with what The Agency has done to the character Nadia Al Mansour, not that there is no injustice done to the other characters too.

The Agency is soul less compared to The Bureau. They could have done so much better if they had simply copied the original in English and not tried to do their own thing. There is not even a hint of exciting direction or acting or keeping the story line in sync. It is a rushed series done to achieve God knows what.
