Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Few updates from my side -

True detective season 4
The first season of true detective was a masterpiece, none of the other seasons lived up to the standards of the 1st season.
Season 4 shows a lot of promise, but the climax and unraveling of the mystery was kind of meh, didn't click for me.
Still not a bad watch, but keep your expectations in check
Rating - 7/10, decent watch for people interested in crime, investigative series

House of Dragons Season 2
The 1st season started off slowly, but really picked up in the last few episodes and ended on a high which built up the expectations of the 2nd season.
However, season 2 turned out to be underwhelming.. goes on at a very slow pace with not enough twists and turns or high points. Losing interest in this series, hope the next season is better.
rating - 6/10, watch it if you are a fan.

Fargo Season 5
After a disappointing Season 4, Fargo Season 5 is back with a bang. I really enjoyed this season, and the show is back to its unique storytelling style.. hard to imagine this to be true story.
Rating - 9/10, highly recommended

Bridge Season 1
This is a Nordic investigative crime series, watching it dubbed.
The 1st season was really good, the story telling style is a bit slow-paced, but it does have its twists and turns and keeps your engaged.
Liked it, and watching the 2nd season now.
Rating - 8/10, recommended for people in crime investigative series

Fargo movie and all seasons of the series starts with a prologue that states that the events are based on a true story but in truth; it is all fictional. It's sort of an in-joke started by the makers of the Fargo movie - Coen brothers.

Shekar Homes
Streaming : Jio
Rating: 4/5

An excellent take on Doyel's Sherlock.
Set in a Bengal town called Lonpur, in the 1990s, the basic plot is from the well know Holmes stories with several creative liberties taken.
Thoroughly enjoyable. The unveiling of "M" is the highlight.

Excellent acting by the cast, Ranvir steals the show.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Just few minutes back I was thinking of writing about this fantastic serial. Hope Jio cinema comes out with another session.

I really liked the twist given to original stories. Particularly liked the story I presume based on Hound of Bhaskerville. Learnt many Bengali words and KK has done wonderfully along with the doctor. The climax, though I had a faint doubt turned out to be a real twist.
The locales of Bengal are wonderfully inter-woven to the story along with Mrs H

Ranvir has been saying on talk shows that he isn't getting any work and that he is on reality shows like BIGG BOSS. Yet I see him everywhere

No nudity, no vulgarity. Some few scenes may be bit scary, but overall okay for kids. Treat it as PG13.

Yes.
Skip episode 3 since it has some references to blackmail of sleazy videos etc.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Started watching the legendary series 'Breaking Bad'. Currently on S02 EP08. I only started watching becoz of imdb rating, and most of my friends were going gaga over the series. Till now, I have failed to understand what all the hype is about this show. I have heard and read from plenty that this is the best series made till now. I am finding this show very overrated. Its a very basic show with plenty of loopholes. Maybe this show is like classical music which is'nt for everyone.

But but but.. I would like to know from Bhpian's what is behind all the hype this show has created without spoilers as I am yet to watch further seasons.

When I started watching BB in early 2023, couldn't push myself to continue post S01 Ep03 or so! Just kept stalling it & switched to other programs.

Mid-2023 decided to clean up my watchlist, hence decided to give BB a final try! Just pushed thru couple more episodes which I felt quite boring, but there was no looking back after those!

This may be purely a personal POV, but there are hardly any other shows that riveted me to the seat & made me watch episode after episode, like this one!

To cut it short, watched the rest of show/seasons in a record 10-15 days time, and then its prequel "Better call Saul" and then the spinoff movie "Road to El Camino" all in succession - though the prequel/sequel are good but not upto the original one's standards. Then watched BB all over again once more, and then again! Spouse couldn't understand what I found so addictive in this one, she just casually watched one episode with me, dismissed it as boring & didn't watch the rest of it.

Don't know how to explain it - the intensity of characters (EVERY one of them, not just Bryan Cranston & Aaron Paul), the way story-telling progresses, how one plot drives to another, how it pins down one to the seat & demands to watch it - hardly any other show/series/movie has done it to me!

Heck, there's even one episode purely dedicated to... a "house fly" & how they deal with it (rather how they deal with their relation, what to make of it, some philosophical touch etc)!

Don't want to post any spoilers & take away the show's excitement for prospective watchers, hence refraining from saying anymore!

If I recollect 'Breaking Bad' only starts getting engrossing from Season 3 onwards! Its sort of a slow burn & you do require a lot of patience to get through so many episodes. But its worth it I feel!

If this show hasn't broken through to you even at S02E08, it is unlikely to grow on you. As per Wiki, this is "Better Call Saul" episode. So, a lot has happened already.

From what I remember, one needs to push through only the first episode of season 1, and at a stretch, the second one too, before you know you're hooked to BB. If not, then you probably never will be. I mean, you still like the show, but you wont be crazy about how tight it is.

Been there, felt that. I understand the feeling. Per me it was one of the better directed shows and we watched it till the end but mostly for closure. It was a little too violent and a bit of drag after some time.

There was a spin off movie which I never felt like watching. But we started watching the spinoff show - Better Call Saul and felt it was a much better one. We eagerly waited for the last season of Saul and it didn’t disappoint. Do give it a try. (PS: some characters of Breaking Bad appear here).

The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)-bblast.jpg

Breaking Bad had some glacially slow episodes in between. However, the last 4 episodes have been the BEST I have ever seen in television, before or after :

To'hajiilee
Ozymandias
Granite State
Felina

These four have been such an immersive experience. It was only matched (to an extent, not completely) by Better Call Saul.

Well, the whole concept, storyline, characters and most importantly a location which was never in any movie makers radar made this show into the legend that it is.

Imagine a chemistry teacher who is soft, intelligent and educated like most professors are changes his demeanor from episode to episode and becomes a totally different person by the middle of the series due to all the circumstances that is never seen before characterization.

What is thrilling is the so many near misses of them getting caught by his BIL kept me on the edge of the seat.

Each and Every character did the role of their career

Walter (What an acting. Pure love)
Jesse (What an acting. His rap style dialogue delivery is amazing)
Hank ( Cocky and atypical cop. Brilliant)
Saul (Sleazy, Despicable and Desperate- One of the best actings I ever saw in my life)
Gus (A black Italian dude- Sinister to the core and super polished)
Tuco (One of the best villains on screen)
Lalo (He too. What a villainous character. Charming and dangerous at same time)
Hector...so and so forth. Every character is a gem and played to the hilt by them.

We being car guys, a note on cars. Imagine using an ugly car like the Pontiac Aztec is so funny and real at the same time considering his financial situation.

This is one of the few series that I keep going back to watch some specific episodes that I love the most. Like this one scene is my most favorite- Tuco is my favorite maniac.

Then there is Saul Goodman. I never saw such fantastic acting in a long time.

I do agree it gets unbearably slow in between which is a minor downside but, the pace keeps picking up and I would highly recommend you to finish the whole series and have patience.

After this is done, move on to "Better Call Saul" and trust me you will be rewarded even more. Sometimes, I toss a coin to decide which is the better series and I'm still " undecided"

Breaking Bad- 10/5
Better Call Saul- 10/5
