Lost to Netherlands in a super over! :( Really sad to see the once mighty team in such a state.

India-Afghanistan at the Kotla & India-NZ at Dharamsala are going to be 2 tricky games! Afghan spinners at Kotla and Boult & Co. bowling second under lights could be a handful.

The bad form of WI seems to continue, they slumped to 30 for 4 against Scotland today.

Van Beek of the Netherlands did have a couple of super over(s) though - 30 runs off his bat in one over and then 2 wickets with the ball the next over.

He may well be in line for an IPL offer soon.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Controversial dismissal of Bairstow. Sandgate team doing best what they are known for. What an intriguing test match.

Ben stokes taking the bull by the horn.

Ben Stokes !!

Re: The Cricket Thread

Ben Stokes!

What an innings. Singlehandedly took the game England’s way. Amazing hitting. And a brilliant change of tactics from Australia, that finally lead to his wicket. Still, dogged resistance being shown by no 10 and 11 batsmen. Test cricket at its finest.

Nathan Lyon’s services were badly missed by Cummins and Co today. Man is a certified GOAT.

Edit: Starc cleans up Tongue. Aus win. 2-0

Re: The Cricket Thread

Done and dusted. Well done Aussies. Fantastic effort by Ben Stokes though. Test match at its best.

Expecting all the three remaining matches to have closes finishes.

Re: The Cricket Thread

What a legend Ben Stokes has been for England! Similar kind of innings, albeit in a winning cause, he played in 2019 Ashes. He had played a phenomenal role in last 50 over world cup to get England its first ever 50 over world cup trophy. England would be hoping he comes out of his ODI retirement for this year’s world cup.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Ben almost took them across the line. Lovely hitting. If only he had stayed 3-4 more overs, the script would have been different.

I’m waiting for our own Pant to return back to Test matches. Hopefully, he’s healing well.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Another spicy Test match, the next three have a lot to live up to!

As a bit of a purist, that dismissal left a bad taste because it was absolutely needless controversy in a fiercely-contested game. England supporters would love to believe they'd have won otherwise, but a 5-day Test rarely comes down to one event, and on the balance of things, England gave themselves a mountain to climb after the foolhardiness of their first innings at 180/1(?), something 100% in their control. Stokes' individual brilliance on Day 5 shouldn't paper over their choices over the days prior.

As to the 'spirit of the game' argument, high-stakes professional sport just doesn't work that way, like it or not (I don't). England, of all who've ever played the game, have a trophy in the cabinet won on a 'because the rule-book says so' technicality, so it's a bit naive to complain when you catch the short end of that particular stick.

It should've been the umpire's (and if needed the match referee's) call to entertain or reject the appeal if they felt it was illegal or unsporting, they're the ones running the game and handling appeals is part of the job description. It makes little sense to appeal instead to the magnanimity of someone about to benefit from a situation, esp. when they're within their rights to try.

The reported incident in the members' pavilion, non-players abusing players, reflects poorly on everyone involved.

Either way, the Ashes needed some needle and a few pantomime villains, we now have both.

Roll on Thursday at Leeds!

Re: The Cricket Thread

I absolutely loved the Carey stumping of Bairstow. Stuart Broad, one of cricket's biggest cry babies, can go take a hike!

I was supporting England before the series started, but love the way Australia are playing. Also reinforces the fact that they were definite favourties against us in the WTC final.

Will be very interesting to see Todd Murphy in the next game. Looking forward to Thursday!

Re: The Cricket Thread

Normally am ready to believe the worst about the Aussies, am 'Root'ing for ENG through these Ashes, and reading the Cricinfo commentary and news, I assumed the Baristow dismissal was blatant cheating. But after watching the clips, it was pure 'brain fade' on the the part of Johnny Baristow. It's not like the wicketkeeper collected the ball, waited for a long while for him to leave the crease and then stumped him. The ball was clearly still in play. Clean stumping, no foul. Baristow has no one but himself to blame. No 'spirit of cricket' consideration even applies here.

But Ben Stokes' genius ensured that this match will at least be remembered for the right reasons. What.A.Player.

Still rooting for ENG to win the next 3. But highly unlikely. This Aussie squad have done the hard prep. They are a great, adaptable team. Grudging admiration.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Losers crying is what it is. The WK didn't even pause before throwing the ball. It happened as soon as he caught it. Bairstow is playing in a Test match. He should know better.

Well done Aussies

Even if it did, it doesn't shine favorably on England. The events of 2008 Vs. New Zealand spring to mind, when then-captain Collingwood insisted their 'technically right' run out appeal be upheld against NZ's Grant Elliott. A certain Stuart Broad was amongst the playing 11 that day. Amusingly (and some say karmically), NZ won with a last-ball Graeme Swann overthrow.

A few years later, in a dismissal of Collingwood against NZ, nearly identical to yesterday's incident, NZ captain Vettori (with the prior acrimonious event) still decided to withdraw his team's appeal after the 3rd umpire ruled the batsman out, and let Collingwood continue. Now there's a sporting gentleman I can respect.

Collingwood later spoke of his regret of his choices in interviews, but the facts are England have chosen advantage over 'sportsmanship' when faced with the choice, and have no leg to stand on pretending otherwise.
