Re: The Cricket Thread

Looks like Kohli will be the 4th player to score 10k ODI runs for India.
The trio remains at the top for now (Sachin/ Ganguly/ Dravid).

Dhoni is 50 runs short though he started 4 years before Kohli. As captain, he should have promoted himself higher up the batting order more often.
It would be fun of both can manage to do the 10k mark in the same match today.

Striking point is their averages and strike rates
Kohli averages 59.1 at a strike rate of 92.5
Dhoni averages 50.2 at a strike rate of 87.3

I remember being awed by Sachin's average of 45 odd. Batting in ODIs has certainly changed a lot post the advent of T20 cricket.

What Kohli has been achieving is just phenomenal. If we talk about Kohli the player (leaving aside Kohli the captain), there is not one flaw you can find. That man deserves every accolade he gets given how tirelessly hard he works.
I agree with you here. I just love him (and his attitude) as a player and according to me, he is the best ODI player to have ever played the game (so far). Somehow I am not convinced with his captaincy, though he has got very good Win-Loss record in ODI.

small correction, average at 59+ and it will remain 59+ if he remains not out or scores another 50 odd runs.
phenomenal stats nevertheless and this particular comment from cricinfo "The skill that he has to cut out all kinds of risk from his game, that computer in his head that decides which way the bat should turn to pick the gap" summed up his cricketing skills!

True...that's why in the first line I wrote 58+
Also the records are at that point of time when a player reaches 10000.

Anyways, Dhoni is out for 20 and his career total tally of 10144. Kohli will overtake Dhoni also in this series in all probabilities

Sorry, it has to be 59+ and not 58+. Because, his average was 59.17 when he reached 10000 runs. Correct me if my understanding is wrong.

I wrote this keeping in mind his entire career and since this innings is not over and his final average is still not known. I safely wrote 58+ because even if he gets out for less than 111 today, his avg will be 58+

This was when he reached 10K

Hope this explains.

Anyway if he crosses 111 today (8 runs away as I write), he'll maintain average of 59 even if he gets out.

Re: The Cricket Thread

In the list of ODI top scorers for India, one name stands out for me.
Sehwag scored almost 8k runs in ODIs at an average of 35 but a strike rate of 104!!!

What a player he was too!

I remember when Sachin retired, I thought his records will take more than a decade to break. But the speed & ease with which Virat is going about scoring runs & breaking records is unreal. Credit to the man, but not discounting the fact that pitches have gotten flatter & quality of bowling has diminished !

Re: The Cricket Thread

There is absolutely no way you can compare batting records in across different times. Rules change, game changes just a lot of things happening. You can however compare batting styles and techniques.
Kohli like SRT is an amazing white ball cricketer and to me currently the best. He has still some way to go to prove himself as a Test player but, he is by far heads and shoulders above any Indian cricketer right now.

Re: The Cricket Thread

There is no comparison between Kohli and Sachin. Though Kohli is still half way in his career, he has won far more matches for India, in all forms of cricket than Sachin.
Sachin was very attractive player, looked good when he played the shots. Longevity is another Sachin's strength. But Kohli has been more successful in terms of wins for India.
When batting got tough, baring few innings in his long career, Sachin usually gave his wicket away. Kohli doesn't seem to have any trouble while batting. Kohli is one of the top ODI Batman in the history and No 1 ODI batsmen when it comes to chasing in the history of cricket.
