It's a nuisance, but I don't even mind if that box is 'checked' by default as long as I have the option to 'uncheck' it.

More and more service providers are moving to 'this payment method will be saved, you can remove it later from your account settings if you want'. That's sly, knowing full well a large chunk won't bother with the extra clicks.

The aforementioned Hotstar goes a step further down that dark path. There is (a) no uncheck option, and (b) there is no "remove from account settings" either. The only way to get rid of it[*] is to cancel your subscription.

[*] And who knows whether they actually remove the card details? As Mobikwik seems to have demonstrated, "delete my card" only updates a field in a database (deleted = true).

Oh yes, suffered that first-hand.

Better half signed up with her credit card, then noticed the auto-renewal on card statement. It's apparently auto-renewed unless cancelled by user, so she now has a reminder on her calendar for a few days before subscription expiry to review/cancel.

It's as if they're counting on busy professionals to forget or miss reminders (if they even send reminders), and become captive customers by default.

The Juspay leak occurred on 18 August 2020 as per an ET report. Tough to imagine prescience of that specificity.

What info? They must enforce the rule on everyone who wants to process recurring transactions on my card.

It doesn't necessarily end with cancellation of the subscription either, --- Netflix claims to save the card information for 10 months beyond account cancellation! And who knows if it is actually removed even after that!

It is not just busy professionals, many people don't check their CC statements religiously and miss these transitions, especially if they are not of very high value. And, many businesses survive because of this auto-renewal model. I used to work for an American internet giant who used to get a major revenue from auto-renewal even after many customers stopped using our services

Re: The Credit Card Thread

Sites like NYTimes make you call up the cc if you want to cancel your digital subscription. And they won't let you go easily.
RBI's directive to give periodic permission to auto debits is a good pro-consumer move. I interpreted that the reminder is given yearly, so it is a good occassion to review your spending habits, even if it pertains to electricity bills etc.

Re: The Credit Card Thread

Only Domestic - Online, Tap & pay and merchant were enabled. ICICI has proactively blocked my Amazon Pay CC due to security reasons.

We would like to inform you that we have received an alert from our external network partners about a location where your ICICI Bank Credit Card XXXXXXXX was used. As a proactive measure, we have blocked your Credit Card to prevent any potential misuse.

Your new Credit Card will be delivered to your registered communication address within 5 working days. No fees will be charged for the new card.
Payment is due on 4th and I've scheduled the payment to happen on 4th itself. Can payment be made to a CC that's in blocked status ? I don't yet know the number of the replacement card.

It'll mostly be a card with the same number and different cvv and expiry date, which means the old info cannot be used for any transaction. ICICI is usually up to date on such payments, there is one primary card number linked to your ID, if you have made a payment they will credit it. Raise a ticket through the ICICI app/website, they promptly get back on it.

Re: The Credit Card Thread

In the last month's statements, in both my Credit Cards, I notice an entry 'A1 Card Usage Fee'
In my Standard Chartered Digismart and HDFC Regalia, I've never seen this charges ever before. Both were Rs. 49/-. Should I challenge these?

Re: The Credit Card Thread

Guys, I have not been receiving the OTP SMS from ICICI for both credit card and debit card transactions since the last few days. Has anyone else here experienced this?

I had to do the OTP on call option which was available only with the debit card option and that came through properly. But no SMS. Called the customer support and the support guy checked with the back-end team and said they’ve been sending the SMS and I’ll have to check with the service provider.

Re: The Credit Card Thread

Have you recently installed any spam filters like True caller? These apps can sometimes stop these messages to appear in your inbox. Faced a similar problem because of True caller a few months back.

Take a two pronged approach.
  1. Open a ticket to your phone vendor stating the problem. If this fixes your issue, well and good.
  2. If not, reach out to your bank branch (preferred) or customer care and ask them to disable and then enable the alerts. This works most of the time.

No man. Haven’t done any changes to the device.

Thanks guys. Did both and they both pleaded helplessness blaming the other party.

Restarted the phone and it worked. Got a flurry of all the old OTP SMS. The old adage - if nothing works, restart the device, worked.

I don't recollect having seen such a charge on my cards (including HDFC). If you don't know why you are being charged for something, you should raise a ticket asking for a clarification. Better to spend some minutes framing a mail/ticket than having a nagging feeling that your are being taken for a ride.
